If people feed them -- either deliberately or unwittingly (by leaving cat food on the porch for their roaming cats) -- they lose their fear of humans. That has been the case here in lovely uptown Phoenix. In one upper-middle-class neighborhood, somebody is leaving food out, and a pair of coyotes has decided to make themselves at home.

By and large urban coyotes are harmless as long as they have not been "tamed" in this way. They certainly WILL take your cat (another good reason to please keep your cat inside!), and they can kill and carry off a dog the size of a smallish corgi. During whelping season, they will try to clear their territory of other canids, which by instinct they know are likely to predate on their pups. If they're hungry enough, tame enough, or whelping, they can ghost right over a six-foot wall.

That's the case in this Phoenix neighborhood. The residents have flown into a hysterical frenzy -- it's a development of patio homes, and so people living there tend to have small, tasty morsels...uhm, dogs. One lady's dog actually was grabbed in her backyard, but she managed to scare the coyote off by hollering at it.

When you leave food outside for the kitties -- or for your dog -- coyotes will come into the yard and eat it. Not surprisingly, they will look kindly upon you and decide you are their friend. Because people tend to get very hysterical about these animals and because coyotes can occasionally take after a small child AND because they can carry rabies, you do not want to ingratiate yourself with the local coyotes. If they become pests or are just perceived to be pests, the animal control folk (or an obliging neighbor) will shoot them.

Remember: a fed coyote is a dead coyote.

Please DON'T leave food outside for cats or for dogs! It attracts coyotes. And PLEASE don't deliberately feed coyotes. They're very efficient predators and they're omnivorous -- they eat almost anything, including (conveniently) mice, rats, squirrels, and gophers. If they're hunting instead of scavenging food from humans, they'll be well fed without developing habits that put them and your pets at risk.
Bringing a puppy home in a house with two cats.tag:mycorgi.com,2015-03-10:1150197:Topic:19080852015-03-10T12:02:22.758ZBrenda & Pemmyhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/BrendaKestemont

Hello,

I have two cats, both still very young. One of the two stays inside because she's just a kitten of 7 months. I want to let her out in the spring, so that'll be soon I guess, since the weather is changing in Belgium. So I have two questions

1. How do I introduce the pups to the cats? Both are very social to us, but easily frightened by sounds and brusk movement and not familiar with dogs.

2. When do I let my kitten out? I don't want to do it now, because in just two weeks we'll bring the pup home. I'm worrying she'll see 'the outside world' as a place where she escapes the puppy and won't come in as much. I want her to stay a kitten who's glad to be with us when we watch tv, ... So am I right to keep her inside for her to get used to the puppy? So she won't feel replaced? How long will that take?

Can anyone give their opinion on having a CERF exam and a heart exam done on a dog that is spayed? Are these tests things that people check if they are going to breed their dogs? One of the dog schools by us had an eye and heart exam. I didn't know if it was something I should have taken advantage of just so I know that she is healthy?

Hey everyone! Lola peed on the couch a few days ago. She hasn't had any other accidents or problems peeing nor drinking a lot of water so I don't think it's a UTI, just behavioral. I have a light brown microfiber sofa without removable cushions, so I'm unable to unzip and take the cushions off. I've tried a few different methods, but nothing has worked. The stain was gone, but the smell won't go away! I'm trying to avoid paying a professional since I'm a law student with little money, so any…

So I finally found my little pup and will be coming home to me in the next 3 - 4 weeks! I've been doing a lot of research of what food to feed her! The Breeders feed her Royal Canin. I don't know whether or not to continue with Royal Canin or switch to brands such as Wellness, TOTW or Orijen! As far treats are concerned I think i might just use carrots. Is it healthy enough to use milk-bones or the chicken jerky treats? Please let me know!

Hi my Katie and I jsut got back from the dog park, and I am worried sick! She was the only dog there that wouldnt play or run. I walked her down to the lake (only to find labs and retrievers) and back which was about a 1/4 mi walk and she was beat.

She wouldnt let any other dog get near her hip area. she would snap at them. She does have a waddle when she walks, has had it since she was a baby, only lately its been a much wider waddle. I have noticed last couple of months, she has…

She wouldnt let any other dog get near her hip area. she would snap at them. She does have a waddle when she walks, has had it since she was a baby, only lately its been a much wider waddle. I have noticed last couple of months, she has missed her step a few times, and has tripped, or jsut then decided to sit in the same place she missed that step.

I thought it was because of lack of excercise but lately I have been taking her on walks. At 1st, it was only around the block, and then 2 blocks, ect. only when the weather is cool enough, she hates the heat.

I keep her nails nice and trim, cause I thought it might be that, but it isnt.

I've read some of the posts about hip displaysia, and all who owned dogs with it talked about a popping sound, and I dont hear anything.

She does sway her rear area when standing, like she is unsteady. she still wants to jump on the couch but I put a stop to her jumping down, I carry her down, every since a woman at work had her min pin almost paralyzed jumping off the bed..

Last winter she did have an incident where she jumped off the couch and was acting hurt for about 5 mins, but then she seemed ok.

She has always swayed in her step or stance, even as a puppy, I thought that was normal because of having such a long body. Her front legs are very strong and even when she stands, but her back legs do sway and seem unsteady.

Katie is the runt of the little, she is much smaller than other corgis, and boy did I see that today and the corgi meetup!

Anyone else with a similar problem? any help on Corgi health issues with symtomps like this?

I hear hip displaysia just gets worse over the years, and I want Katie to live a long and healthy, and happy life. she seems bothered by this and sleeps most of the day in my room on her pillow.

Hi all! Anyone in the Selmer or surrounding areas of TN lose (or want to adopt) a Corgi?? We found one today on our land; I live in an "intentional community" called Rose Creek Village and all my friends and neighbors were asking me if Heidi had gotten out today b/c they thought she was loose. It wasn't Heidi, it was a boy look-alike! Very sweet red and white little male. I'd love to keep him but I already have Heidi and we're so far only supposed to have 1 dog per family here. I have a corgi puppy joining my family in about 4 weeks, and I already have a four year old ferret. I was wondering if anyone else has this pair of pets? Tummy, my ferret, loves dogs and has even lived with one for five months (my roommate had a coton de tullier). It often takes more time for the dog to warm up to Tummy than Tummy to the dog. Tummy, my ferret, loves dogs and has even lived with one for five months (my roommate had a coton de tullier). It often takes more time for the dog to warm up to Tummy than Tummy to the dog. I realize that since I'm getting an 8 week old puppy, it should be pretty easy for her to get used to Tummy, but I'm still nervous. I have separate "quiet spaces" for each of them, so they can have alone time. I know that I should introduce them slowly to each other and have supervised playtime until they get to know each other. I'm not allowing Starbuck, that's the puppy, to have any toys that look like Tummy because the last thing I want is for her to think "Hm, this long fuzzy toy squeaks when I bite it... I wonder if that long fuzzy thing running around will squeak too?" Tummy is a free-roaming ferret, meaning no cage, by the way, and he thinks he's human. The ending question is has anyone ever had experiences with ferrets and corgis? I'm hoping they'll be quite a cute pair... I'm sure they will be.
