So I'd just like to check in and make sure we're not under/over feeding him. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how much they feed their Corgis by weight, not in cup measurements? I'm not in the US and cup sizes differ in different parts of the world. All of the info I've found in here talks in cups :)

We feed him grain free dry food. I've done a 'cup to grams' calculation that says 1/2cup = 6oz = 170gm -- does that sound about right to you guys? 170g in 1/2c seems a lot to me as usually with flour 1c = 150g... I've seen a post saying someone feeds their dog 1/2c three times a day, so I'm not sure about the calculations! BTW That's not how much we feed him -- just trying to get an idea of the cups :D

Hi there,

I have a 10 month old female Corgi named Lucille who weighs 12lbs. I got her from a BYB at 5.5 weeks old because her mother weened the pups early. (She had 9 pups and it was her first litter.) Lucille was the runt of the litter. Her Mom was fairly small as well (about 20-25lbs I'm guessing) I've heard people talk about 'Mini Corgi's'...are they real or is it something made up? If real, would Lucille classify as a 'Mini Corgi'?

Lucille has plenty of energy; I feed her approximately 1.5 cups per day. She is happy, healthy, and has her papers. I just want to know if anyone has any advice or concerns. Lucille is my Service Dog and does a wonderful job but I want to ensure she has the best and stays healthy. Does anyone have any tips or similar experiences?

Max weighs 15.03lbs at 15 weeks. He's not by any means overweight, we can feel his ribs perfectly and his waist is pretty well defined. I have been reading and it looks like he is the size of a 4.5-5 month old corgi now!! My husband jokes around that he will look like a German Shepherd on short legs when he is fully grown!

How much did your corgis weight at his age?

Hello! Monja and I just got back from the vet who said he is 20 pounds on the dot. Monja is about 7 months old. He doesn't really seem overweight to me and I can easily feel his ribs when I touch them but otherwise can't see them. He also has that hourglass figure with a defined waist. I still give him 2 cups of kibble everyday (once in the morning and once at night), along with some treats or other little additions to dinner, like small pieces of chicken, apple, etc.

First, I'm wondering if his weight sounds normal. I was surprised that he was so heavy, especially for being pretty young still.

Second, when do I start feeding him less? Eventually, I think I've read that he should only be getting one cup of food. When should I start decreasing how much he eats? He LOVES eating and inhales his food, so if it were up to him, I think he'd say never! haha.

Lately I've been noticing he's been looking mighty skinny so I decided to take him to the vet for a weigh in to see if he truly was losing weight or if my eyes were playing tricks on me. He was down 4 pounds in less than three months! Normally for a corgi this would have owners jumping for joy, but since Franklin was already at weight, this has me quite worried. He has actually be getting about 1/4 cup a day MORE food than normal, no increase in exercise or activity so I really can't account for this huge weight loss. Appetite is normal, poops are normal, energy is normal, so now I'm trying to wrack my brain as to why this sudden drop in weight. Pre-Kirby we would regularly go on 3-4 mile rollerblades everyday in addition to in house fetch/tug time, and now we are just going on much shorter walks so I don't think the addition of a second dog has much to do with it. They dont' play all that much anyway, mostly its Kirby chasing Franklin who is playing with me, not the two of them running laps. Anybody ever deal with trying to keep weight on a corgi and/or dramatic weight loss for no good reason? I'm going to increase his food more and re-weigh him in 2-3 weeks and cross my fingers for some weight gain, otherwise I guess it will be time for some bloodwork to figure out what's going on. Working at a vet my mind always jumps to the bad/scary so I'd love it if others have dealt with this either with adding a 2nd dog or ?
Corgi pup is home!- w/Day 2 updatetag:mycorgi.com,2012-03-04:1150197:Topic:14771122012-03-04T04:34:53.989ZMelissa and Franklin!http://mycorgi.com/profile/Melissa919

UPDATE: So I'm seriously toying with the name Houdini. This little bugger is the ultimate escape artist and I'm guessing that is how he ended up as a stray to begin with! I've had to block parts of my patio fence that I wouldn't even begin to imagine a corgi could fit through but he will run outside and squeeze under until he's almost to his shoulders. I have blocked all the possible patio escapes. He has also escaped the house twice now. Once with my mom and once today with me. Luckily he is a chaser and Franklin is a master herding artist so between me running away from him and acting excited and Franklin running out to intercept him, we have caught him both times without incident. Today he was even leashed when he escaped, just jerked the leash at the exact right moment. AND I have an ex-pen for him set up in my room with not one, but TWO locks on it. I put him in there when I left with toys, crate, water, etc and came back to be greeted at the door by 2 corgis! I checked the pen and all locks were in place, I have NO idea how he got out! The crate is placed away from the edges of the pen and up against a wall so he couldn't have climbed on it. Anyway, luckily I came home to a nice clean house and my guess is he had to go potty (since he's had diarrhea so bad) and broke out to go potty. He is SUPER potty trained, which is so awesome and I've already taught him to use the dog door. He is REALLY smart. Einstein was another thought for name since he has his fluffy hair and is a genius. I am guessing he is closer to about 7 months than 10-11 months. Based on his size, teeth, and bladder capacity. He can't hold his urine for a full night without needing to go out, even though he goes potty right before bed. The last 2 nights, right around the 7-8 hour mark he starts frantically whining and tearing up the pee pads that line his pen. I let him out and he jets right out the dog door to pee. I've always heard they can hold their bladder as many hours as they are months old and that's what makes me guess also that he is 7-8 months. He's just so small but his feet are BIG. He looks JUST like Frank's sister did at around 6-7 months and she is now 28 pounds, Franklin's size. How much would you guys feed a dog his size? Right now he is getting just chicken and rice since he still has diarrhea. I've basically been feeding double what I feed Frank and that seems ok, but I just don't remember how much puppies eat!

Well today was the big day when I met the rescue from Bakersfield who was posted on here about a week ago. He is very cute and sweet. The shelter said he was 10 months old but I have a feeling he is much younger. He is quite skinny (like young dog skinny), only about 15 pounds, and his teeth are super white like a very young dog. Franklin hated him for about 5 minutes and then tried to get him to play. The pup is VERY nervous about Frank's barking and growling so he needs to get used to how Frank plays. He is really overwhelmed with everything and came right in the house and pooped in the middle of the floor, clearly he has no concept of potty training. His behavior is EXACTLY like Franklin's sister's, A LOT of nervous energy. He is so overwhelmed with everything he's been through in the last week so he's going to need quite a bit of time to adjust. He was in the pound, then put in a rescue with 5 other dogs, then neutered, and now is home with me. Poor guy just doesn't know what to think! I need to get him a new crate, he has taken over Frank's. I was thinking wire, but he seems to really like the airline type crates. When he gets overwhelmed he goes into the crate and watches the world from there. He met one of my cats and was SOOOOOO good. His personality seems like it is EXACTLY what I am looking for, just needs time and training and exposure to new things. He has the personality and training of a 3 month old pup, but that should make him easier to train and work with I think. I am so happy with his personality and I really do think that with a few weeks with me he won't be a nervous boy, just too much has happened to him in such a short period of time, poor guy.

Also, I know there have been a lot of discussions on here about weight but I can't find him. As I said before, the shelter said he was 10 months old and he's around 15 pounds. Just wondering if this sounds normal? Trying to estimate his age based on average weight since its hard to tell by teeth at this age. He has all his adults which means he's at least 6 months.

Also, he needs a name! I can't figure out what to name him yet, he came with the name Bob but that will be changed.

Hi all! We adopted our male Pembroke, Macaroni, in late December of last year and I'm having a little trouble with feeding. When we adopted him, he was a bit overweight at 35lbs (down from 37lbs when the shelter found him) but he quickly dropped to 33lbs-- getting used to a new house after being in a shelter is stressful! We also had to ween him off of the shelter's fatty food (Iams) onto new food (Blue Buffalo). The snow was really bad early in the year, so he didn't get a whole lot of outdoor exercise in January & February but he stayed pretty stable with his weight. He weighed in at 30lbs a couple of months ago and the vet said he's at a perfect weight and his health is great-- much better than when she saw him when he was shelter-fresh. Now, he's very happy, healthy and fully integrated into our home & lives.

We have been very active, especially in the last few months: weekly trips to the dog park where he runs around like a maniac with his buddies and long walks 2-3 times a day. Unfortunately, he's now down to 27lbs! Macaroni is ~2.5 years old and we had been feeding him ~1/2cup a day of Blue Buffalo Adult kibble split between breakfast and dinner. I've upped this to almost a cup a day since his weight loss. He gets between 6-10 small treats a day for good deeds and he loves Dingo Munchie Sticks so he gets 1 per day. We're also bad parents sometimes-- he gets table scraps every now and then.

Sorry for all the background info! My question is: How do all of you more seasoned corgi owners adjust your dogs food throughout the year with their changing activity levels?
just a suggestion for those who need to cut their corgi's nails (also, is my dog getting fat?)tag:mycorgi.com,2011-09-19:1150197:Topic:13129532011-09-19T06:29:12.854ZAmber and Kirbyhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/amberlierobbins

I would like to switch him over to something else, something that I can feed to both him and our new puppy (once she's old enough to switch her off of what the breeder has been feeding her). I've settled on giving Taste of the Wild a try, but I have a question or two.

Poor Yuki put on 10 lbs over the past year. It wasn't his diet (at least not solely his diet), but changes in his activity levels. He sort of wound down after he hit 2 years old. On top of that, we moved to a house with hardwood floors (no more frapping indoors!) and a smaller yard. I was also pregnant at the time, so his walks weren't as long or as fast. The good news is that we've got him down a few pounds already by feeding him through a treat ball and walking him more!

My question is this: Have any of you had any weight control issues while on Taste of the Wild?

I tried him on some Wellness Core (reduced fat) and am not sure if Taste of the Wild would slow or stop his weight loss. Is there a formula that is less fattening than others? I plan on trying the Pacific Stream formula since it's lower protein, but is there another one that would be a better choice?
