<p>I should add Jack now goes about 35 pounds but he is a RAIL. I keep him super thin because he goes banging around the house, chasing tennis balls and skidding on the tile and slamming into the wall. He's back up to 1/2 cup 2x a day and maintains weight at that; sometimes we need to give him extra. Once he lost the weight, we had to up his food and he is back to what he got fat on. Not sure how that happened.</p>

<p>Our Maddie gets 1/3 cup AM and 1/2 cup PM but sometimes she puts on a pound or so and we cut her back for a week or so. I don't keep her as thin as Jack because she's easier on herself. She usually goes about 28 pounds and is heavier proportionally than Jack at 35.</p> Oh bless her, she's a chub! …tag:mycorgi.com,2014-02-17:1150197:Comment:18427112014-02-17T03:49:31.549ZBethhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/Beth306
<p>Oh bless her, she's a chub! I know it is NOT because of you at all but she needs to lose 10 pounds at least.</p>
<p><br></br>What is the calorie count on the food? We feed one that is only about 300 calories a cup. I've seen foods as high as 500, which would make a huge difference. Make sure the primary protein source is meat and not corn gluten or soy protein. Adding in treats and food, my dogs probably average something around 400 calories per day. </p>

<p>I think adding exercise is the key. You need to get her moving. Think of breaking up the day with repeated small bursts of exercise to get her metabolism moving. So for instance, when we come home from work we have a game of chase. While we're watching tv we throw a ball. Considering her weight you don't want her working too hard for too long, but try to get her moving as often as you can and build up from there. </p>
<p></p>
<p>Have you had her thyroid checked? That could cause issues if it's low. If that's ok, you may need to cut her back even further, to a quarter cup 2x a day. Check with the vet; you may need a supplement for vitamins and minerals if you are feeding that little amount. </p>

<p>How did you move his weight down from 43 to 39? My girl was 47# when we got her one year ago at 6 yrs old. I feed her 1/3cup 2x daily. I make her treats myself. Very low cal. She has very minimal exercise. We walk everyday, but she walks very slowly. Her weight is not budging. She is a very large Corgi like you describe yours.</p>

A 9-month old will typically look a bit lanky and gawky (he might not have grown into his ears, say, or his back may look a bit long). However, he should not look overtly thin.<br />

You ought to be able to feel ribs with gentle pressure, but should not see them. There is no "right" amount to feed a dog. Each dog burns energy at a different rate. Most Corgis always seem hungry! LOL With a Corgi, you must go by how they look and not their appetite, but those stubby legs sure make it tough to judge sometimes. And you can't just judge by weight, either. I just showed a breeder a pic of Jack at his current weight and she says he's fine, but if you saw Sam Tsang's pictures of his two new rescues at the same weight as Jack, they are clearly a bit tubby. I just came on to post this e…tag:mycorgi.com,2009-07-29:1150197:Comment:4831912009-07-29T01:06:37.630Zjustine moellerhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/justinemoeller
I just came on to post this exact thread but you guys are way ahead of me!!!<br />
Mickey is eating half a cup in the morning and half at night. He is 9 months and 16.5 pounds (I know I know..small guy....) Does this seem like too much food (still on puppy food) to you guys? Or too little? He always seems hungry which i know is a corgi trait ;) But it had me a bit concerned I am not feeding him enough!!!

Hardy is 4 or 5 years old. He gets 1/2 a cup of Taste Of The Wild twice a day. He weighs about 33 pounds. I think he gets moderate excercise, and I don't count his tearing around the house chasing our black lab/border collie mix a part of the excercise. That's entertainment! We call him a wwf wrestler, since his favorite move is jumping on the chair and diving on top of the border collie!<br />
<br />
Our vet check yesterday said that he is the perfect weight based on his size.

Sparty has had a lot of health issues! Allergies (he gets an allergy shot once a month), Partially tore his ACL a couple of years ago but does pretty good as long as we don't overdo activities, and he has anxiety issues too. We have medicated for the arthritis but I fear that it just makes him overdo it and we really don't want the ligament to tear all the way. He would be a terrible candidate for the surgery. We have medicated for the arthritis but I fear that it just makes him overdo it and we really don't want the ligament to tear all the way. He would be a terrible candidate for the surgery. When he was young he tore a toenail off while racing around the house. It damaged the nail bed and ever since, he has a nail tear about once or twice a year. This is very painful for him (imagine tearing your nail and having to have the rest of it pulled off) and has made him a real mess at the vet's office. Anyway, he does pretty good all things considered. Also, his intense love of nylabones cracked one of his molars and wore most of the enamel off his back teeth. He has always been a "fast lane" type of corgi but we love him. Have you had any other issues…tag:mycorgi.com,2009-07-28:1150197:Comment:4820982009-07-28T00:10:10.197ZJoey Nolegs Gilberthttp://mycorgi.com/profile/Joey

I don't think you can go by weight. You really have to look at the dog. I feed 1/2 cup twice a day with some veggies thrown in a dinner time. Mine get a minimum 2 (usually more) half to one hour walks a day also. Sometimes Izzy gets a little less because she tends to put on weight even though she is much younger. (she is a couch potato) I go by how they look at the withers. If they start to lose the indentation I cut back for a while. My hubby loves to feed them snacks so we have to watch that.…

They are probably like people in that as they age they need less to keep the weight off. Although Sparty is ten and stays pretty slim but he is just now slowing down to normal activity level. He used to drop his ball down the stairs so he could chase it ! It is better to be a little on the light side than over for many health reasons even though it is tough since they are always starving. Tallulah is 9 months old and around 22 pounds. She gets 1/4 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup for lunch and another 1/4 cup for dinner and she also gets treats. She loves frozen bananas too!
