Good point. I was just hoping it was an indicator, since we really had nothing else to go on. There aren't even a lot of vet reviews on the internet. I have had people tell me Cornell vet hospital is incredible and have practically performed miracles when their pet needed it.

Sweet. Aber used to do that in the snow. In the last couple of years before his back surgery, we lived in a town where everyone loved to use salt everywhere in large amounts whenever it snowed at all. He always loved to run through the snow banks, but in this town, he really couldn't go more than two houses away before the snow would burn his feet. So, he'd plop his butt right down in the snow, and hand me a paw so I could pick out the snow and salt and then give it a good chaffing so…

So, he'd plop his butt right down in the snow, and hand me a paw so I could pick out the snow and salt and then give it a good chaffing so it would warm back up. Then we'd do the other paw. It was really cute, although I felt bad for him having to put up with the salt at all.
Thanks for the advice and I d…tag:mycorgi.com,2011-12-20:1150197:Comment:14080462011-12-20T17:46:11.992ZAber, Ragnar and Kelsohttp://mycorgi.com/profile/ShannonRogers

Thanks for the advice and I do wish you were closer because your vet sounds ideal.

I really am confused with our vet. When we took our new kittens in, he was extremely thorough and caring and did a great job. But each subsequent visit with a different pet has just been increasingly cursory in terms of exams. And the nurses take us back to the rooms, so the vet never actually sees any pet walk or move much at all. I'm really starting to suspect he's riding this out until…

But each subsequent visit with a different pet has just been increasingly cursory in terms of exams. And the nurses take us back to the rooms, so the vet never actually sees any pet walk or move much at all. I'm really starting to suspect he's riding this out until retirement, and has picked a replacement to buy out the business, and his heart is no longer in it.
Our Vet is part of a small hospital (only 3 or 4 Vets in a small-ish building), but I think it just depends on the individual. As another person said, a good indication is when the doc greets the pet first. And our Vet definitely has her eyes on our Yuki or Ellie before she looks at us. It's pretty important, too, because any exam begins (whether it's a doctor with a human or a Vet with a pet) when they first see the patient. They're trained to look for irregularities, signs of pain,…

It's a shame I don't know anyone down near Elmira. I'm only familiar with a few Vets upstate and they would all be 2 or more hours away from you. The one thing I like about a practice with more than one Veterinarian is that you have the option to switch Vets without having to switch practices. Plus if my Vet is unavailable for some reason (vacation, sick or whatever else might be happening) there are others who can provide emergency care and still have access to medical histories. I did luck out, though, as my Vet has a close friend that breeds corgis and she helps her out a lot.

Oh, I should add that when you call around looking for a new Vet, ask the receptionist what his/her opinion is about the Vet(s). Explain your situation and concerns regarding thorough examinations and treatment and see if they think he or she would work well for you.
I wouldn't count on a vet bei…tag:mycorgi.com,2011-12-17:1150197:Comment:14060432011-12-17T17:51:41.091ZJane Christensenhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/JaneChristensen

I wouldn't count on a vet being "good" just because of where they graduated. We have a new vet and she's very nice and graduated from a great school and you can see how much she loves animals but if anything is wrong with a dog I go to the older vet because he knows his stuff.

That is soo funny. We can relate to that. Coco would sometimes get things caught in her pad and could not get it out so she would sit until I came to get her and pick her up and check her paw/pad. That happened more than once. They are sooo loveable.

We're very close to Cornell, which is one of the best in the country. This current vet graduated from there, so I thought he'd be great. Rochester is about 1 1/2 hours away, and I think Buffalo is 2 - 3.
