Corgies with fears and phobias

My older dog is so afraid of storms and fireworks. It seems like he is getting worse! He trembles, pants, and tries to hide. He gets in small spaces, and gets into the bathtub. He even salivates. Dose anyone use any medication their dogs anxiety?

Mendy, I'm glad for you and Petie. Although I distrust the big drug companies, sometimes pharmaceutical science is the only effective answer. (Can you imagine advertising doggy-valium on TV--or infomercials with corgis hosting the programs?) Susan

Thanks to doppler radar, I can medicate Petie an hour before a bad storm hits. Otherwise he has absolute terror. The medication the vet gave us does not knock him out. Because he is so old I used to worry about the stress storms and fireworks put on him. Much better now. Refer to the picture of him hiding in the bathtub, drooling, panting, and shaking. I don't miss that at all, and neither does he!

My first corgi, Mike, had issues with loud noises: storms, fireworks, trucks backfiring. As he got older, the fireworks phobia got worse. After the 4th of July one year, Mike wouldn't go out at night for the next month and his bedtime "walk" consisted of running around the house from the back door to the front door to get back inside. I did talk to my vet and sedated every 4th of July after that. Mike would basically doze through the fireworks. When he did hear particularly loud explosions, he'd pick his head up and look around as if thinking, "I should be concerned but I'm not." and then close his eyes again. He woke up perfectly fine at his usual time the next morning. I don't know that it's possible to sedate a dog for irregularly scheduled thunderstorms (the drug I used had to be given a couple of hours before so that it had enough time to become effective) but the sedatives worked perfectly every July.

Don't know yet about Angus, who also hides during thunderstorms. It rained last 4th (would have been his first fireworks display) so there wasn't a big fireworks display to react to. I think I will sedate him because Angus believes that the sky can fall and crush little dogs--no reason for him to suffer when I can easily help him snooze through the evening.

Go talk to your vet. You should be able to get something that's quickly effective and yet doesn't completely knock out your dog. Like your dog's fears, Mike's fireworks fear grew over time and became debilitating. I was able to eliminate this problem for him completely. (Best I could do for thunderstorms was sit in the bathroom with Mike wedged behind the toilet but that seemed reasonably comforting for him.)

Oppy is afraid of plastic bags, boxes, and the vac. He also shy's away if he hears your keys jingle. He's our little "spaz"

My Lyla is afraid of everything... everything! I've tried and tried socializing her to no avail. She's sweet and I love her, but it sure is inconvenient sometimes!

Nugget has always hated my exercise ball. It doesn't matter if I'm using it or if it's just sitting there she is going to bark at it and dart at it like if she can scare it it will be the one to run away. She also isn't a fan on the sound of pens clicking or anything new in general. If the blanket isnt folded on the back of the couch when we come down in the morning she will bark at it and do the darting tactic until I put in on the back of the couch. And storms and fireworks are other things we avoid.

Scarlet is afraid of deer targets...and notebook paper! She got close to a deer target once and literally ran 50 mph in the opposite direction.

Yes. All we have to do is get out the wand for the vacuum cleaner and Frodo gets all cranked up. He even tries to bite the little dust-buster when I use it. We put him out in the yard for the duration. It must be the noise. Penny and Roxy don't care about the noise at all.
Comment by Potus on September 29, 2009 at 5:45am
Potus is scared of the vacuum cleaner, the electric mixer, sometimes the blender and the printer. His reaction is trying to attack whatever is making the noise or whoever is standing next to it This is very inconvenient considering I love to bake (and clean!) so the routine is that someone usually takes him for a walk while the appliance is in use. Sometimes we can get away with shutting him in the room furthest from the noise, but it doesn't work if we're using the mixer. He has to be put on a lead in the room farthest away with all doors shut between him and it. He still hears it and tries to attack whoever is holding the lease.
