Does anyone have one of the herding balls for their dog to play with? I'm thinking of getting one or two for Bunny to play with in the yard and at the park.

Kerry: Our Friend the Welsh Corgi: Rowland Jones, 1948 (Methuen & Co., Ltd., London) - Chapter 5 entitled Facts and Theories about Corgis. Welsh Corgis: E. Forsyth-Forrest, 1953 (Ernest Benn, Ltd., London) - Chapter 3 entitled Character and Ability. The Corgi: Thelma Gray, (W.& R. Chambers, Ltd., London) - Chapter 1 entitled The Welsh Corgi.

One of the American books with a pretty good chapter on the farming/herding aspect of the corgi is: Your Welsh Corgi: Robert J. Berndt, 1978 (Denlinger, Fairfax, VA) Chapter 9 - History of the Welsh Corgi.

The early English/Welsh books have wonderful examples of farmwork. Thelma Gray's book is considered seminal. There are other early books by Charles Lister Kaye and Dickie Alban - but those breeders were dedicated to typing the early breed standard and utility wasn't really delved into. The best of the early books is by E. Forsyth-Forrest. This Welsh farm woman became a breeder and judge. Her book contains so many farm-related stories and at the end is the "Corgi Fantasy" poem as written by Miss Biddlecomb of The Welsh Corgi League.

Sometimes, these books are available through booksellers. They are worth seeking out. Especially the E. Forsyth-Forrest Welsh Corgis.

I'm reading old English corgi breed books (1920s and 1930s) and their antidotes about herding from Wales to London; droving the roads then doubling at farm chores - really raises my awareness of Corgis' capabilities. I note that when we are out of the pens and walking paths on Terri's farm, my dogs are at their best. Terri let me try her Border Collie in the pasture and what a difference in maintaining distance and immediately crouching.

Congratulations to Corbu! Corgi high fives from Tasha, Bear and fluffy Linus!!! Would you share how you trained to get to the HSAs? Sheep?

Corbu got his HSAs this summer. We have 2 more trials this year. One for AHBA
next weekend, and one for ASCA at the end of October. We have 1 leg of ASCA started and are looking for the 2nd. Here are some herding pics from this year:

We had a great lesson last Sunday with both Bear and Tasha. Two entire different corgis and the right stick is proving helpful. We moved a split flock back together into one pasture and Tasha is learning to keep back from the flock. Moving around an enclosed course with Tasha is very challenging. No lesson this weekend, but one the last weekend in September. Anyone else doing fall lessons? Cattle, sheep, ducks? ????

I have decided that it's time to get a proper herding staff. During lessons, I have always used a length of PVC pipe or the rigid end of an old buggy whip as a staff but found a Kentucky craftsman who makes walking sticks, etc.! It should make a world of difference to have a pointer (I hope)!

At our lesson on Sunday, Bear successfully completed two trys at a testing set up! Talk about fast! My, I was running, the sheep kept on coming and Bear kept us all in check. We plan to start our legs this fall once the weather gets a little cooler down here in Virginia. Gosh, I love my old man - Bear's such a happy guy when he realizes we are going to go move some sheep!
