Maya is a red and white cardigan.  she is going to be three in May and her breeder breeds both pems and cardigans.  she has beautiful dogs.  since she shows I don't know that she would no dock a pem. maya is the true cardigan in personality.  shy in public and bossy and silly at home.

OH, it was Helix, the red and white tailed pem! Wish I had stopped to meet him, but Snickers is shy around other dogs, so we wandered off.

I saw a red and white with a tail at the beach day, I didn't get a really good look, but I thought it was probably a cardigan. As far as backyard breeders, Snickers is AKC but did not have champion lines and you can tell, physically. She does not have a luxurious coat- which for me is perfect because she does not shed as much. She doesn't have the long derpy corgi tongue (I don't think that is breed standard ?) She is not as long and low, which is probably better for the back. Her snout is short, which makes her look puppyish. Her parents probably did not have testing for the usual health issues, and at the age of 4 had to have knee surgery for a torn ACL. Knee surgeries are very common, so I don't know if the better quality bred dogs are less likely to have problems. A good breeder would match you with a puppy with the right personality and be there to answer questions or take the dog back if you had problems- ever. My breeder said you got money? which one do you want? I love her and would not trade her for a corgi with champion parents. I have 3 dogs; one with a tail, one with a nub and Snickers the tail-less. Love them all.

@Caitlin Randolph thats awesome then! I know it would be pretty tough to find that anywhere in California! Some major differences between my two dogs are mainly in appearance, they both aren't old enough for any heredity issues to show up yet, but right off the bat I could tell you that Emi (my akc pup) has a much more beautiful, shiny, softer coat, has a head that is more narrow and fox like (more like a show dog corgi) and is longer and lower to the ground, whereas helix has a pretty dull and rough coat (I have to feed him salmon oil to try to help with his coat), seems to be a bit too tall or not furry enough where hes supposed to be, and has a shorter snout. oh, and he has a tail LOL He definitely looks corgi, but not as corgi as Emi does if that makes sense :P but he is from a backyard breeder after all, from unregistered parents, so there was no thought in pedigree or lineage, just "i have two cool dogs i should breed them". if you think your breeder is reputable to your standards, then that is awesome! :)

I didn't see a red/white with a tail at the 2/9 corgi beach gathering, but we left about 300 pm, so we could have missed it. The one we saw was black and white- small for a cardigan, and really fluffy. She was a beautiful dog. At first I thought it was a black and white Pem.

@jenny I do know what dog you are talking about. I can't seem to find the video where I saw the dog, so I may be crazy. It was definitely a red pem, but could have been a red cardigan?

@Jay & Bently I grew up with a cardigan mutt so I love me some tails but from my experience and my polling and researching it seems Pembroke's tend to be a little less timid and shy. I live in Los Angeles so a big social personality is much more suitable than the slightly more reserved cardigan.  I will definitely look into rescues. Because I do live in LA I want to get one as young as possible so I can start training and socializing for an Los Angeles lifestyle ASAP. I am definitely not closed off to the idea of a rescue though, older dogs you can tell their personality a lot more. I really feel guilty in fact for talking to breeders but for my very first dog I have had completely on my own I really want to start from the puppy years for this first one.

@liane, emi, and helix  I have found a breeder I am pretty pleased with, seems to breed for agility and temperament rather than show so keeps the tails but they are all the way in Minn. Feels a little crazy to go that far for a dog but this OCD has got me good.   Mind if I ask what the differences are that you have noticed from using the backyard breeder?

I think the dog you are seeing with a tail is a fluffy cardigan- if it's the back and white dog. We asked the owner about her.

@ Caitlin Randolph -- Is there a specific reason you are looking for a Pembroke with a tail and not just a Cardigan?  Cardi's are only on average 10lbs heavier than Pems, and for the most part they all have tails (and larger ears than Pems).  But, if you really have your heart set on a Pem with a tail, I suggest you try a Pembroke Welsh Corgi Rescue organization.  It may be a long shot to find a 9 week old puppy to start off with, but if there is anybody out there in contact with more Corgi's.. it would be them.  http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/rescue_network.html

Be careful about breeders (both private and "larger" scale) -- some can be pretty shady about their lineage and/or mental/physical health history... and you'll be paying a pretty penny for their dogs (I've heard prices range from $500-1200).  If you go through a good rescue organization/person, you can find a perfectly good Corgi for a couple hundred (mostly just to cover the cost of nurturing and personal time to raise a newborn).  I picked up my Bentley for less than $300 from a private rescue.

And I'll tell you this much -- if you want a specific Corgi, I mean with specific traits or characteristics, just be patient.  I wanted a specific Cardi -- I was mostly looking for personality, but I was also looking for either a tri-color or blue merle... it took me 2.5 years to finally find him, but it paid off because we're both happy and his personality suits me.  Patience will pay off, just be prepared to wait a bit.  If I hear anything about someone breeding Pems that have tails in the future, I'll let you know.  Good luck!
