Im so excited I just had to brag alittle bit : )

At our herding practice on sunday our trainer said that shelly has really stepped it up in the past few weeks, so we are going to try her in the BIG FIELD next week!! It will probly be a disaster but Im excited to try!

Also she said that she is going to find a trial for us to get our first titles!

Ill be bringing the video camera to our next practice and Ill try and post it.....

Keep your paws crossed that we do well so we can stay in the field :D

This is a total newbie question, but what's the minimum age a dog has to be to start participating in herding?

Well, Finn's herding training is really coming along. We have made a point of only training our skill sets in the small pen (60ft. x 60ft) with 3-4 sheep each week. This gives us a chance to really focus on control, obedience, his sends (no breaking the flock, but go OUT), and give him some different passes to work with... walk, trot, run. As well as put a solid stop, sit, stay on him. We also needed to get him to be less excited. Now he only barks when he need to reprimand a naughty sheep. And he is calmer in the ring and settling into an adult mature corgi. I am so proud of him. Next week's session will return us to the big field and the AKC Course A set up. We will see how his new skill set will help out there. May toss some rams into the mix too. :)

Bailey will have her first herding lesson this Thursday...I am excited and eager to see if she can handle the sheep...Also a little worried that she will be scared of the sheep...she can be quite the little chicken :-)

Tasha and I had a really good lesson yesterday. Terri has an enclosed chute running down the length of a long pen and I practiced "away" and "bye" sending Tasha through the ends of the chute. When she reached the appropriate end and come out, I would be at the opposite end of the pen and she would "easy" bring the sheep to me and give me a "sit" when asked. This exercise really made her think. Afterwards, we went into a square field and moved a small flock around feeding pens and other obstacles - my trying to control her "easy" approach and getting "sit" when she began to exert too much pressure. The sheep were greatly relieved when we got into the car and went home!

Hi Cathy, The only thing I could see as a possible negative with the boomer ball is that it encourages the dog to make contact with the object. I am new to herding (my first season and my boy Finn got his HT this summer), but one thing I learned in the clinics from the judges and from helping scribe is that the judges really didn't like contact to be made with the sheep. Maybe that is because I am located in an AKC area? Or maybe because we are only set up for Course A right now? Maybe someone with more high level experience will know better.... but that is just my 2 cents.... otherwise, it looks like great fun.

Tasha did really well in parts of her lesson this Sunday. Worked on sitting and walking up upon the sheep. Kate brought her two boys Squizzy and Louie. Louie was recently rescued from Staunton ASPCA and he is a black and white tri/fluffy cutie. While Squizzy was working in the round pen with Kate, Louie slipped his collar, dashed between the rails into the pen and unhurriedly began to circle the sheep. I mean Tasha borders the frantic and this boy who doesn't come out from under the futon at home yet showed finesse! It was delightful to see! By the way, I am going to go look into the boomerball after I get off site! If you haven't seen it on YouTube, search for A Corgi and Her Ball to see Dolly!!

Searching the web one day for things for Bunny, I found these :
http://www.boomerball.com/

They're balls that dogs with herding instincts to play with.
Just wondered if anyone had tried them, thought about taking it to the park with Bunny.
