Woo hoo! Glad you guys can make it! While it may be hot, the area for the picnic has lots of shade trees. But do bring chairs and drinks...and something to share for the potluck lunch. And, don't forget to RSVP at the picnic website! Here's the link: http://sccp.corgimoon.com/
Uh, oh Joey! Did you try cut & paste? It works for me...well, mostly. Dewawis is having a few hiccups with the website because of a new "host" for the site this year. If they cut & paste doesn't work...can you tell me what you are seeing??? Here it is again:
Hi. My name is Vivi and I just joined the group. I was at the Corgi picnic at Johnny Carson park last weekend. I took a ton of pictures, about 1.5Gb. I built a website to make it easy for people to see them. How do I post the link so people can see them? By the way, can you identify the cute butts on my profile picture?
Vivi, just copy and paste your link on here in a comment...
or click the add hyperlink button on top of your comment window... it's third from the right, looks like a chain.
I just posted my album from the 2009 Corgi Picnic at Johnny Carson park. It's only a subset of the 526 pictures I took at the picnic. I don't know how to add the link here to the website I created, but if you go to my page, I posted the link there. Enjoy !!!
I love those pictures of the Corgis at the picnic! Are those guys in the red coats USC fans, by any chance? My son is a senior at USC this year!!! GO TROJANS!
This particular event has a long standing tradition of being in September. And, being an "annual" there is only one per year.
There are other events, like club events, but they tend to be in summer months too. The club's Fun Day is in June at Featherly Park/Canyon RV Park in Anaheim. The next event is already booked there for June 19th, 2010. We did camp at the park for the 2009 event and enjoyed it very much. A few other Corgis and their folks did the same.
For more casual get togethers, there are parks that have "meet ups" of sorts every weekend. Lots of Corgis there...but, of course, not the huge crowds of the more organized events. Still, lots of fun!
I guess it just takes someone willing to organize an event? It could be an outing at a park, a picnic or a camp out. That's how the annual picnic started 13 years ago...just a small event with friends getting together to share pot luck and bringing their Corgis. Now it is a big event with many attending...for the purpose of fun and fund raising.
I know there are various meet ups around, but I don't have details for them. Maybe other will chime in to point some out. I know that lots of Corgi people go to the Redondo Beach Dog Park on weekends. I know it is in the morning, but not sure if it is Saturdays or Sundays or both. Again, maybe someone that goes to them can give details.
However, you can check for the local club's events on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of Southern California's website under events. Here's a link to the page:
You don't have to be a member to attend any of the events! Although the info isn't on the Events page yet, the next Corgi Fun Day will be at Featherly Park (aka: Canyon RV Park) on Saturday, June 19, 2010. There is always lots of fun, food and lots & lots of Corgis!
All that said, maybe you will want to suggest a meet up?
I am looking for help with training my corgi. I live in Glendale and my difficulty with him barking in response to the aggressive dog (not corgi) barking next door has escalated since the dog got loose from the house and attacked us two nights ago while we were going for a walk! Any advice for classes trainers etc in the area since I want to curb the anxiety he experiences with regards to this dangerous dog next door! Thanks for any help!
Britt and baxter, unfortunately we all live in a pretty unforgiving world these days, so I would start by speaking to the owner of the dog who attacked you and guage how receptive they are to making sure their dog does not repeat the aggressive behavior (barring an accidental escape or release). At a bare minimum, I would definately report the incident to the local animal services division and make sure that the incident is documented in case the behavior continues and documentation is required to solve the situation. Bottom line, there is no reason in the world (besides an accidental release or escape) that you, or your dog, should have to put up with an aggressive dog or an uncaring/irresponsible owner. Your dog may need some time to calm down from the incident, where you and he/she can begin to work together to solve the barking problem. Good luck
Thanks for all the advice! I don't know if I should be brandishing a weapon walking down the streets of Glendale lol. I walked with a hiking pole the day after the attack and felt a little ridiculous :) Baxter has calmed down (has gone on a ton of very positive playdates) and the neighbor has apologized but unfortunately continues to leave the door open so that the dog can see and bark at anything that moves outside. I suppose it will just be a work in progress and I keep telling myself that the only things I can really control are my dog and my reactions which everyone knows corgis are super perceptive to our feelings!! :) Thanks again everyone!!!
Bailey and I just moved back to LA after living in San Diego for a few years. We are in the South Bay/Marina Del Rey/Santa Monica area, and were wondering which vet you take your corgis to? I heard Sepulveda Animal Hospital in Culver City is great, but which vets are your favorite? I only ask because we've heard those horror stories. We actually just took Bailey to Dr. Olds at Brentwood Animal Clinic last week to get x-rays done on her hips/legs (found out she has a partially torn acl), and he is apparently the best orthopedic specialist/surgeon in southern california specializing in small/dwarf breed animals. He is wonderful, but since he is a specialist, we were also looking for a vet where we can take her for her other concerns such as vaccinations and annual check ups. Any advice would be appreciated :) Thanks!
Are there any meetups in the area coming up? We would love to get together to play once Bailey's leg heals.
Hi and welcome back to the westside! We live pretty close to you in Mar Vista.
Our vet is Dr. Gross at the Animal Medical Center of Southern California on Sepulveda, just north of Pico. We like her very much and she has a Sheltie herself, so is familiar with the herding doggies and meds they should not have. Additionally, the facility is a 24/7 place with emergency facilities. One hopes to never need it, but it is good to know too?
We have heard very good things about Dr. Rachel Jones at Marina Veterinary Center on Lincoln in Westchester. The are both holistic and traditional medicine.
My best suggestion would be to "interview" both or even more, until you find the doctor that you feel good about. But, especially find an emergency place and make a test drive to it, so you are prepared if ever there is a need???
Let us know when Bailey is feeling up to it, we'll plan a day for the Westchester doggie park, or let you know of upcoming Corgi events.
We checked everyone out in the westside and marina of LA. We only trust Dr Shane. Shane Veterinary on Lincoln in Marina Del Rey. She's amazing. Very responsive and friendly. And her staff is very very good with handling Joey who is a big baby when it comes to doctor visits.
A comment some time back referred to the Corgi assemblage at Redondo Beach Dog Park. The Corgis gather on both Saturdays and Sundays, with everyone there by 8 AM (early is best for Corgis and it even gets earlier in the hot summer). More Corgis on Saturdays than Sundays, but many come both days. It's been going on there since late 2003. Very inclusive. Everyone welcome. Good parties every once in a while, too,
Wow, 6.9 Earthquake in Mexicali. I hope everyone in S. CA, especially near SanDiego is safe! I'm in the SouthBay (Redondo Beach/Torrance) area and it was a pretty long rolling quake and the chandeliers were swinging.....
Steve had a really concerned look and wouldn't leave my side. He's laying down by the front door now ready to leave if he feels anything stronger.
Has anyone taken the dog to be scanned for a microchip? Has anyone put a found post on CraigsList or ads in the local papers (all free for Found). Someone may be missing this pup very much! Tell your neighbor, thanks for caring and making sure he is safe!
He is adorable! Do encourage him to take the doggie to a local vet...or even a shelter...to have him scanned for a microchip. There should be no charge for that and it may help for a happy ending!
Calling all So Cal Corgis and their hoomans too...check out the Corgi Fun Day event listed on the My Corgi Events pags. Save the date: 6/19/10...hope to see you there!
We are moving to Southern California from SF. Looking for some new Corgi friends :)
Hoping to settle in the Long Beach area... look forward to getting to know you!
Cool & hope you enjoy So. Cal. There are a lot of informal, unannounced and on-going Corgi get togethers. Most popular is probably the Redondo Beach Dog Park. Sat./Sun. mornings. But do watch MyCorgi Events listings as there are a lot of annual get togethers and fund raisers that are way cool too! You just missed the annual Corgi Fun Day, but there will be another next June.
Well, I think it will be different! Just make the most of it? Ultimately, it is our own mind that decides to make it good...or not? I say make the most of each and every day! Of course, Corgis help with all of it! ;-)
They are Saturday and Sunday mornings. I'm not sure how early, but pretty early in the morning...maybe 8AM??? It is a dog park & very informal, so all are welcome.
