No one took any pictures at the meet up? :(
  • Kirby'sPerson

This is the first time I've been able to check in for several days & I am sad to read that Finn has a leg problem. What happened? Sound's like he is getting wonderful care and getting better. Kirby is going to the Vet later this week for an overall Senior check-up + of course...getting his nails clipped. $14.00 seems like a "deal" after all the ways I have tried. I surrender!!! LOL.

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween. Kirby LOVES to meet & greet people (what corgi doesn't?), but we had him with his bed and water in one of the bedrooms to avoid any little tot getting scared. He got lots of attention and toy fetching time...so a good time was had by all!
  • Alice

Thank you for your concern about Finn. He is not limping for the moment so that's a good sign. Our vet diagnosed him with hip dysplasia but we were told if his limping persists we will need to see a specialist to make sure nothing else is going on. He doesn't care though. Whatever the problem is, he still wants to run and play. :)

I agree with you on the nail clipping. I hate trying to do it myself so it's so worth it to pay for someone else to do it. Hope all goes well at Kirby's check up!
  • Abbea and Vivi

    I want him.. :(

He's up in Prescott, but I'm not sure if we can afford a dog yet. :( :( :( :( :(
It says he's a corgi mix but he looks like a purebred to me, just the stockier kind, which I like...
  • Abbea and Vivi

    Oh, here's his petfinder page.

The shelter website also has some info on him. He's about 4. It also says he's on hold so maybe I'm too late.
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

I agree, he looks like a purebred. And a handsome one at that! I don't see that he's on hold, and the comments say he "loves everyone and is a little love bug". So yeah, he's a Corgi. Make the call!
  • Abbea and Vivi

I just might... I showed my husband and he seemed very sure that he wants to get him and we can afford it. He said he'll be like an anniversary gift for us. I'll try calling today and I'll ask if he's still available. The soonest I can go see him is Sunday since that's my husband's first day off this week.
  • Abbea and Vivi

I'm so excited I could hardly sleep last night! We were planning on going to my parents' house this weekend anyway and it's a lot closer to where King Pin is! I really hope we can get him...
  • Alice

Did you call and find out if he's still available? That would be so great if you could adopt him. I agree that he looks all Corgi and he sounds very sweet. Best part is, you won't have to go through all the puppy training.

I'm sure you can afford him. I know how you feel because my husband and I are in the same boat, possibly worse off as far as finances go since we were both laid off and had to take jobs that pay less, but you just make it work. We wanted to wait until we had a house and more money and what not but years kept passing and we finally said to hell with it, we're getting a dog. I'm glad we did. Life is better with a dog. You should check out United Pet Care. It's a pet health discount plan (not actual insurance). For Finn we pay $9 a month and as much as we've had to take Finn to the vet, it's been worth it.

Good luck, let us know what happens. :)
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

"Life is better with a dog" - Alice, I couldn't have said it better myself! Nancy and I wish Dexter could have joined us *years* earlier, but of course life's curve balls always got in the way. Neither of us owned a dog before Dexter, and he's been as patient with us as we've been with him.

And yeah, bypassing the puppy training reduces stress and expense for sure.

Keep us updated on whether King Pin will be joining the club!
  • Abbea and Vivi

Well, I tried calling right when I got home. I had to leave a message though since no one was able to answer the phone. Oh well. I hope they call me back...
  • Abbea and Vivi

Oh, and thanks for the advice guys! I agree, life is definitely better with a dog!

I'll check out United Pet Care also. It sounds like a good deal, and I don't want money problems to hold us back from going to the vet if we need to.
  • Katherine Randall

Hi guys, i'm new to this corgi business but loving it so far, i was wondering if any of you participate in any kind of agility type stuff, my little Lilu loves to run and be active but I wasn't sure what was our there, thanks!
  • Abbea and Vivi

Aww.. I found out King Pin was adopted today. Definitely a bitter sweet ending for me. Well, I'm glad he found his home.. I just thought that maybe this was the one. :(
  • Alice

Keep looking. You'll find the right Corgi for you. Have you checked the AZ Corgi rescue?
  • Abbea and Vivi

Yes. I don't want a female yet, and the only younger ones they have a female..
  • Abbea and Vivi

I found another one! Wow, this never happens!
    http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=15078925

I emailed already (they close at 5) and I want to visit Monday if he's still there. Wow a 4+ hour drive though!
  • Alice

That's good news Abbea. He's a cutie. I hope it works out for you.
  • Abbea and Vivi

Thanks Chris n Gretchen. I saw them on puppyfind.com already and they are so cute! If we want to get a puppy though, we will need to wait a little longer because of all the expenses involved... Of course an adult dog will end up being expensive too, but the initial cost should be less I think. Plus, Pete is one of the cutest corgis I've ever seen! And this from someone who prefers red & whites!
  • Abbea and Vivi

Good news!! I called the shelter and he was still available for adoption. They put him on hold for us until we can go see him on Monday! If all goes well, we can take him home on Tuesday. Although, I'm not quite sure whether we will make the drive again the next day or if I will stay the night in a hotel or something. We might be getting a dog!! Very soon!
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

That IS good news! Whatever you do, make sure your night of sleep is a good one, because you may not have another for a while!
  • Abbea and Vivi

True, I know! I'm not sure how we'll get through the first nights since we don't even have a crate yet. We may have to go on a shopping spree, lol. We'll definitely pick up a car harness and treats and drape the backseat with a sheet for the trip over and back. Also probably some wipes or something to clean up with if there's an accident. Any other suggestions for the things I need to get right now?
  • Abbea and Vivi

Oh, almost forgot we need to get a leash! Unless the shelter gives us one. I think they will provide a collar... Any thoughts?
  • Abbea and Vivi

Perhaps a chew? Sorry, I'm just too excited right now! I can't think of anything else!
  • Abbea and Vivi

We still don't know what to name him! We were thinking of Arthur, Arty for short, then my husband started to not like how it sounds or something.. so back to square one!
  • Rosemary Tilton

Hi Abbea, been off line a few days I'm so excited you might be getting a dog. He's a cutie , I love Tri's , my 1st corgi Shaka was a tri. I also got her from shelter. I hope everything works out for you. Dog.com is cheap for most supplies. I have my fingers crossed you'll be bringing a new addition to the family......Rosemary
  • Mary

Congrats Abbea! I'm so excited for you! We originally planned on a red & white too but then we saw the tricolors from our breeder and just fell in love. We didn't come up with a name for Nibbler for about a week after we had her!

The Arizona Humane Society has a store that just opened at Biltmore Fashion Park called Petique!
  • Mom of 3!

I always thought Earl would be a good name for a Corgi... it's just cute. Your going to have to watch his personality the first few days and his name will just come to you...
  • Abbea and Vivi

We ended up naming him Vivi! We got the idea because the red spots above his eyes look like Vivi's eyes from Final Fantasy IX.

Plus, his personality seems to fit. Hope my new icon doesn't confuse anyone. :) Check out my pictures.
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

    That's awesome! Congrats.
  • Brian Mary & Chase

Hi everyone! Any upcoming Corgi get-togethers planned before the holidays? We took Chase to Cosmo dog park in Gilbert today, but it was so disgusting we wouldn't even let him walk around. We could not believe the piles of poop and it just smelled bad. Plus someone posted a notice saying their 7 month old puppy had died from Parvo which they think she picked up there. Scary stuff!
  • Alice

Oh my gosh! I've never been to that park but a lot of people seem to like it. Sorry it didn't work out for you.

We haven't plan a meet up since the October one but we're up for a get together. Now that it's cooled off we can meet earlier. I guess we'll have to get a discussion going.
  • Mary

Maybe we could have a meet up on the 5th or 12th? After then things tend to get hectic :). We live on the west side in Surprise.
  • Abbea and Vivi

Hopefully Vivi will be confident enough to go to the next meetup. It takes him a while to warm up to dogs still. He's not aggressive at all, but he runs away if a stranger dog approaches and wants to sniff. He's doing really well after getting to know my parents' dogs though.
  • Alice

I've been trying to learn more about heart worms and some sites say it's not a big problem in AZ while others say it is. What have all of you been told about heart worms? Do you have your dogs tested? How often? Are they on prevention meds?
  • Mary

I think it is a personal preference. Most veterinarians recommend keeping them on heartworm year round in Arizona, and the American Heartworm Society recommends it year round no matter where you live. I've also heard keeping them on medication from May to December.

  • Alice

Happy Holidays everyone! Hope the new year brings much happiness and prosperity and everything that '09 lacked. :)

  • Abbea and Vivi

Hehe cute picture, Alice. Belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!

By the way, Vivi did great during our vacation (we went to my parents' house again). He even encountered my sister's two little sons (ages 1 and 3) and did not show any aggression. He would run away if they got out of hand, but that's it. At one point the 1 year-old's jumping actually incited a play bow and he wanted to be chased, lol. Vivi is a great dog. :) We hope you all can meet him soon!
  • Kristi Reckard

Help! I really want to breed Grace with another Pembroke Welsh corgi AKC, but want a real dog, not mail sent:)) If you know a male corgi not spade I would love the info. I would be willing to give them one of the puppies or a little money for the time. If any of you wonderful corgi owners know an eligeable bachelor, Please email me at info@slideandbounce.com Thank you Kristi
  • Alice

Sorry, I don't know any unneutered male Pems who are breeding quality. Are you currently showing Grace? Your best bet would probably be taking to other show owners about the qualities of their males.
  • Abbea and Vivi

We took Vivi to the Roscoe dog park in Goodyear this weekend! He didn't play with the other dogs at all, but he was a lot less fearful than I thought he would be. He used to run away when other dogs would sniff him, but this time he stood his ground and didn't run. His back hairs did rise up when he felt threatened, but he seemed to be at ease most of the time. He played with me and my husband readily though. I hope he can make some doggie friends soon!
  • Kristi Reckard

    Alice and friends!
Hey great news! I found a breeder here in town that will help me! I am so excited. No, I have not had time for the show ring (even though I think grace would rock!!!)
I will let you all know how everything goes. I am so excited and so scared all at the same time:)) She is in heat now, so I will keep you all informed. No doggie park for us for awhile:( If anyone needs puppies here in Arizona, I will have some coming! They are all AKC and her new boyfriend is a champ!
  • Alice

I'm glad you found a stud. I hope you are up for all the work of breeding and I hope Grace does well. Have you bread dogs before?
  • Kristi Reckard

No, I haven't so getting lots of help from our wiser older generation! Have two wonderful people who have and are willing to help me. It is still scary no matter what but please pray that all will go well for us. Not wanting to become a breeder, that is for certain! Have you bred before Alice??
  • Alice

No, when I was younger we had an accidental litter and after that I decided I would never want to be a breeder. One of the puppies was born not breathing and it was only thanks to my Mom's fast thinking that the puppy lived. It's very risky for the mother and the puppies and I'm too sensitive a person to deal with that. I watch Finn's breeders posts all the time and it seems with every litter he has at least one puppy dies and it's heartbreaking. No, not for me. I'd rather leave it to the experienced breeders.
  • Lisa and Mousse

Going to Cosmo Dog Park this afternoon (probably like 4ish) Anyone want to join?
  • Rosemary Tilton

I like to invite everyone to a get together 3/13/10 Sunday at Paradise Valley Park, bring your own food, There will be a agility competion going on at the same time. Vicki from "cactus Corgi Rescue", will be there with some of her fur babies , she also told me that we can have our dogs tested to see if they'd be good for agility for a sall fee, if anyones interested give me a call at 623 561 2168 Rosemary
  • Alice

Where is Paradise Valley park? Is there a website that would give more details on the event?
  • Abbea and Vivi

I looked it up on Google Maps and it came up with a park near 40th street and Bell Rd. Sound like fun, but it's a little too far for me...
