I just adopted a Corgi mix from the Chicago Animal Care and Control. He is 2 years old, at least 45 pounds, all black, possibly mixed with Chow-Chow, although I do not see any purple splotches on his tongue. Bucky's story remains a mystery, although he was dropped off with an 8 month old male puppy, supposedly Bucky is his father. Bucky came home to meet the cats, and so far so good. He does not respond to "Bucky", wondering if it is okay to change his name at this point.
Welcome! Good for you on adopting. In my opinion the name change is fine, I think it all in how you say it. Maybe "Bucky" means bad memories for him. We changed one of our dogs names 3 times before we got one that fit him and us. He is fine. Good luck.
I can't wait to see a picture of him! Wellie doesn't have any black on his tongue either, but his red-haired brother did. I guess he inherited a corgi tongue instead of a chow tongue.
I think it's fine to change Bucky's name too. I think it's all in the tone of voice. Whichever dog I call, they both come running.
