Former elementary school teacher and now a family therapist - with a therapy dog in tow. Since I plan to continue to work with children, I know there's a lot of research out there about the effectiveness of the use of therapy animals in therapy sessions with children.
I adopted a little one Halloween 2010 weekend after losing my beautiful girl River in mid-August 2010. New corgi is also a girl - she was born in the beginning of September and is growing fast! After much consideration I've decided to name her Luna.
Luna is an energetic little bunny hopper, who loves to play, especially with my nieces and nephew. She's very sweet and smart, and has taken to training well. She has already become a Canine Good Citizen, passed her therapy dog control test, and finished her supervised hours to become a therapy dog. We are currently conducting visits at various locations around San Diego. She also comes to work with me.
She's currently 2 years old.
I also adopted a 4-year-old corgi July 2011 who I've decided to name Twinkie. She'd been shaved, had icky teeth, is still a bit overweight, and needs training. All of that will take time to get to where I want her, but she is so sweet! Taking it one step at a time with her. She's so far lost 10 lbs, but we still have a way to go and has celebrated her 6th birthday.
Congratulations! I love my beloved first corgi in a traumatic and unexpected way too (he got into the garbage and got a bag stuck on his head and suffocated). It hurt like someone in my family had died- well, someone had. I immediately thought, "I will NEVER have another dog- it hurts too much to lose them!" but within a few weeks, I missed having a buddy to brighten my day. I must admit that I worry about my new boy a lot and fret over things I'd never have been nervous about before, but it does not take away from the joy he brings me. I still miss my big boy, but I love my little boy just as much. Luna will help you get through the rough spots still to come and will bring so much happiness to your life!
Hi,
Well, it's going great. I drove up to Royal Hearts today, mostly to look at her 6 week old males. But the one that caught my eye was a 9 week old female. Since she was old enough to take now, I brought her home. I wasn't really expecting to get a puppy for a couple of weeks. so I'm not as prepared as I'd like to be. But I do have a folding pen, a dog bed and blanket, and a few new toys and bowls. How is potty training going? Any helpful tips would be much appreciated. When my puppy gets old enough I'll bring her to a Corgi Meet-Up so she can play with Luna. Since I thought I'd get a male, I don't have a name for her yet. Joanne
Potty training has been much better. We just spent the last 4 days at my aunts house and a total of 1 accident!
I was so proud of her. She also slept without a divider in her crate and she loves that so much more. I think when I get home I'll be taking the divider out.
Only thing im worried bout is her upset tummy she has right now. I'm on route 95 in Rhode Island right now with a pukey puppy :(
Not a way to spend her 12 week old birthday!
How are you guys doing on training? I've got Harely pretty well on sit and down but stay has been a bit of a challenge. she doesn't want to leave my side and is like a shadow.
lol she cries when I go into the bathroom, doh!
I'm excited bout Puppy's first Christmas. I ordered her a bumble ball the other day lol and I think next weekend I am taking her to see Santa at Petsmart!
Lol I know! They grow so fast. I was just looking at some pictures of Zoe from her first day home and she looks half the size of what she is now! She's doing great with potty training and learning basic commands, although she's still trying to comprehend why she cannot bite me while playing lol. Give a hug and kiss to Luna for us. We can't wait for a sibling reunion at a meet up! : )
Yep, I'm a member of the SD corgi meetup group. We've only been to one meetup so far, and that was the oh-so epic Howl-O-Ween Costume Contest. I kid you not, at least 100 corgis running around, most of which were in costume. Luna was about 4.5 months at the time, still pretty small, so she got a bit intimidated by the sea of adult corgis. After she got trampled by a few that were running across the dog park, she timidly sat by the fence waiting to go home the rest of the afternoon. =( There's actually another meetup, Pups on Parade, on Dec 18. Unfortunately, Luna's getting spayed next week, so she'll be out of commission for a while, particularly since she loves to play pretty rough. We'd love to do a playdate sometime. As a heads up though, Luna can wrestle for hours on end with my boyfriend's dog, who's almost twice her size. She can be pretty in-your-face about playing and never seems to get tired. So if your Luna's up for it, we'd love to!
Sadly, no costume for Luna this year. I attended the meetup really last minute with my friend and her corgi puppy (same breeder, different parents). If you remember seeing a crowd of people swarming around two red/white pups, that was probably us. Not sure if you noticed, but I also recall hearing a group gasp and pause when Luna was trampled because she yelped really loud and everyone was like, "Omg, poor puppy!" I felt so bad. I live just east of Downtown/Balboa Park, which is convenient cuz I like to walk her around Balboa Park whenever I get the chance.
I've never taken Sidney to Fiesta Island. It's a bit far for us and he's not really fond of the water. We'll probably skip it again. I do hear that it's lots of fun, though!
I'll set up a mini meetup at the RB dog park sometime soon. Sidney is actually having a rough night tonight. I hope it's only a sprain, but he was not stepping on his bad leg and he was shaking uncontrollably. I gave him a rimadyl and he's resting now, but I am worried sick. He hasn't acted this way since his surgery :(
If you have facebook and you want corgi friends, look me up "Geri Sterling" and the picture is of me and Sidney. I tend to post more often about walks or playdates since sometimes I forget on the SDcorgi meetup page :/
Zoe is about 11 pounds now. I have stairs in the house which he goes up OK, but she's not comfortable going down them yet so I still have to carry her. I'm thinking she may just like being carried lol. I can't wait to take Zoe out either! She has so much energy and I think she would love going for long walks and hikes with me so I'm very anxious for her to complete her vaccinations, etc.
By the way, your blog is adorable! I love the photos and videos! Happy 4 month birthday to Luna!! Zoe gives kisses!
Hi Krystle! Thanks for your post on my blog about Isabella's spay surgery. Don't worry about Luna, I'm sure she will be fine. I think this was just a fluke of a thing with Isabella. The stress of surgery, different food for a few feedings, and her emotions about the whole thing...At least there wasn't a "medical" reason...I mean, it seems she is going to be A-OK with no explanation as to what caused it. I'm just happy she's on the mend. I've been in over-protective mommy mode since we got her, so I can relate to your concerns with Luna. We lost our 10-year old German Shepherd just a few months before we got Isabella. Even though I don't mean to, I think the timing between the 2 dogs has made me more hyper-sensitive to every little thing with Isabella.
Harley is doing well! She's currently playing with a soda bottle right now lol I'm going to upload a couple pictures of her on to my profile. She's a whopping 10lbs XD
lol that makes me feel better! I thought Harley was big for her age... she gets her rabies shot on Saturday... maybe she has grown another pound in 2 weeks.
Harley isn't wanting to eat her food though... She is interested in other things... such as cat poop. /facepalm
She knows "drop" which is kind of the same thing for her as "leave it" but even when I say that... nope, straight for the kitty litter... I say "no!" in a stern voice and she STILL does it.. I have her on Purina One right now.. which she was doing really well with and now she only eats at it here and there.
I have finally updated some pictures of Taro. It's amazing how much the little puppies resemble each other! Taro is growing to look more like his dad, Banjo, everyday. Luna has grown into such a gorgeous corgi!
luna is so pretty i love the names you have given your corgis river and luna are both really good names im sorry you lost river that is sad i lost my dog missy three years ago that i adopted and had for a couple years i miss here we recently got Ruger Redcloud and i love him so much he is the first dog ive had since missy died three years ago all though i miss her ruger helps
Every single time I see him, that exact scene from Despicable Me pops into my head. "He's so FLUFFEH I'M GONNA DIE!" And he just keeps getting fluffier every time I see him!!
Sorry this is a little late, but yay for Luna!! I can't believe they're almost a year old! Zoe is doing well. She's so playful and makes up games all the time! So far she's invented her own versions of soccer and hide-and-go-seek in addition to chasing after the hose. Videos will come soon! We're getting ready to move to Orange County at the end of the week for my school so it's been a little crazy over here lol. How are you and Luna?
Thank you! Happy 1st birthday to Luna!! I'm finishing a paper so we're just having a quiet day at home, but we went for a nice walk and had plenty of play time at our local park. :) What are you Luna, and Twinkie doing?
Oh my! You got another corgi! We have been wanting another, a tri female corgi, but we just don't have time for another pet right now. Taro has been lethargic in the summer because of the heat (he hates it), and he even had allergic reactions. He's all better now and more rambunctious than ever since the weather cooled down. It's hard to keep with the energy of just one corgi!
I take Taro to a Corgi meet up almost every Sunday in Huntington Beach, and I noticed that the female corgis are much more dominant than the males. They're the ones that usually initiate or escalate conflicts. Have you had this problem with either Luna or Twinkie?
And do you have pictures of Theo? I would love to see what another boy of the litter looks like!
Theo is adorable. He looks a bit smaller than Taro, but that could just be the angle.
Thanks for letting me know about Comfortis! I've been using Frontline for a few months, and it worked fine until the past couple of months. The fleas became resistant really quick. I checked with my vet for other flea control options, and he recommended Comfortis as well. We put Taro on the chew tablets yesterday, and it killed the fleas right away. I will also look for a Green Tea shampoo the next time I'm at the pet store. We're still using his puppy shampoo bottle, and I think it's about time we upgrade.
Thanks for the pictures! I especially love the one of Luna chasing Taro, who is chasing the corgi with the red wings. So glad I finally got to meet you and Luna, who grew up beautifully. We hope to make the drive to another meetup in SD sometime.
Hi Krystle! It's great to hear from you. Zoe and I are great. I have the summer off so we're getting extra walks, play time, and picnics in much to her excitement. How are you and Luna and Twinkie?
Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about that. I'm glad everyone is doing alright now. It's so great that Luna is a therapy dog, especially with your line of work. You must be so proud of your little fur babies ;). I hope you get some time off soon to enjoy them even more!
