I didn't start walking her outside until she was done with all her puppy vaccinations. I was told she could pick up things if other unvaccinated dogs were out and about in the area I was walking her in. I *think* she was 3 months by the time she was all vaccinated. I know they have vaccination and age requirements for some dog training schools too.

Izzie is about a year and a half. I took her to the PetSmart in Yonkers for her first round of training classes. I have mixed feelings about taking her there but I don't have the money for a private tutor like my family had for Lily (my family's corgi) so I thought it would be a decent try.

The shedding = completely manageable, as long as you don't mind vacuuming at least once a week. I let corgi sleep in bed with me which makes for hairy sheets though!

Try looking here for a puppy: http://www.okdoghouse.com/corgi.html That is where I bought corgi from. They sent her to Newark Airport in a crate (so I didn't have to buy one) and I just picked her up at the cargo place. She walked into my lap and it has been true love ever since!

A few words of warning: its probably better to pick a puppy based on being able to go to the breeder and see it interact with the other pups. Corgis can be VERY bark-y and they are quite loud, so it would be best to pick a mellow, quiet pup.

Hi Denise, I got your message from NYC Corgis! We have a meetup periodically in manhattan. Last November, we had two potential corgi owners come to see them all in action, and decide whether getting a corgi was right for them. Are you interested in rescue or a puppy? My corgi is from a great breeder in OK, and there are two other puppies in Brooklyn, Taco and Beckett, who are from a litter I THINK in PA. They would be good to connect with too. Let me know how your corgi search goes, I'd love to help in any way!

Hi Sweetie...I can help you to find a puppy or with any other Corgi questions you may have. I'm just finishing up a bit (ok, a lot) of artwork that I must deliver today. Would you email me at christmascorgi@aol.com with 'puppy' in the subject line so we can chat? Warmly, Cathy ^..^

Thank you for the compliment--I think my Corgi kids are cute too ;o) We did use a breeder. For my last puppy we visited the breeder almost a year before we got our puppy. We went back and visited the puppies after they were born. Our Breeder was about a 7-hour drive away! Our other two we purchased locally through breeders, but we didn't do the long term planning like this last little guy. There are a few NY people on MyCorgi and they may have some good suggestions for you. Also the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of America http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/memberlistaction.cfm has listings, but there could be more quality breeders that just aren't listed. I don't think you will have to go too far. I agree with you, I think it is a good idea to visit the breeder and the puppies ahead of time. There have been a few forums on what to look for. Just go to the forums page and do a search for "questions to ask breeder" There is also a New York Corgis group here on MyCorgi. http://www.mycorgi.com/group/newyorkcorgis If you do decide to get a Corgi, I think you will be happy. My daughter laughs at me she thinks my Corgi obsession has grown since I found this site...probably right. Delete Comment

Most dogs shed, just like we loose our hair, but there are grooming tools that can help reduce the shedding, the furminator is the best tool you'll ever need. We have a roomba and a dyson that keeps the house in order. As far as barking goes, what you really want to do is asses what type of lifestyle you live and what kind of companion you're looking for, in a litter of pups, you can find all personality and they all behave differently. Check out this thread for more info feel free to ask us any questions!

Yes, corgis do shed a lot, but if you comb them frequently it helps a lot. We recently got the "Furminator" and it does a beautiful job-just make sure you use it outside or somewhere easy to clean up! As far as barking, Gus doesn't really bark that much. Mostly when he does, it's either because he sees a squirrel or a deer, or our other dog gets him started! He is very friendly and loves all people-in fact we were just talking that he's not a very good watch dog because her flirts with everyone! I'd rather have it that way, though :) Overall we love our corgi and wouldn't change anything about him!
