My corgi mix has always loved his food (he's a corgi after all), but he had always acted like it didn't exist until I brought it out for him. Recently he has been acting like he is simply starving…Continue

So I recently took in a relatives dog as she is in the hospital and really can't care for him. He is around 3 and is some sort of shepherd mix. His name is Sam. I took him in about a month and a half…Continue

So Moe is a little over a year old now, and him and our other dog have never had any issues. However, out of the blue last week Moe has started growling and lunging at our other dog anytime he gets…Continue

I have been taking Moe to the dog park ever since he first had all his shots, quite frequently. He has always been very playful, playing with everyone he meets. I have had problems in the past of him…Continue

"Boy. I'd either insist that vet test him for diabetes (the thirst is a clue, and apparently weight loss is, too) or take him to another vet and lay out the whole story to her. And I guess if it were me, I'd get that done pretty quick."

"Definitely get the blood panel done.   I don't know what your vet is charging, but we just had a basic liver/kidney panel done on Madison for $49.  We had a more complex blood test done last year when she started seizing (they needed…"

Laura Robertson replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"No he wasn't. I had someone take him to the vet for me yesterday because I wanted him checked quickly and I had to go to school. From what I gathered the vet didn't seem to think a blood test was neccessary, but said if we wanted one we…"

"Wait, what? This dog was checked for diabetes, right?"

Laura Robertson replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"It was about 49.4 originally, then when I took him to the vet for a check up before all this started he weighed 44.3, so five pounds lost. Then two weeks after that (yesterday) I took him to the vet he he weighed 45.1, so he put on almost a pound…"

"And the other person in the house said she just found an accident. There's a slight possibility it's our other dog but he doesn't usually do that (moe hasn't since he was like 6 months!)"

"I think he might drinking a bit more, but I've noticed in the last few days he's been waking me up to go outside a lot more. He used to sleep through the night and wake me up in the morning. Last night I let him out at 11, then he woke me…"

Beth replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"Just to put that in perspective, a 6 pound weight loss in a 49 pound dog is about 12% of original body weight. That would be like a 125 pound woman losing 15 pounds without trying...."

Anna Morelli replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"If your numbers are as stated, from 49 to 43 is actually a 6 Lbs. weight loss...."

"Besides the increase in hunger, is he experiencing any increase in drinking?  I don't want to be alarming, but my previous corgi experienced both and it turned out to be symtoms of cushings disease.  The vet diagnosed it…"

Holly replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"Wpw. I missed the four pound weight loss. That is something to check out. Regardless, I would always rule out medical reasons before assuming anything. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Hope you get answers soon."

Beth replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"Hmm.  Did the vet do blood work?  And do they know Corgis (and mixes) well enough to get that a Corgi whose food is not closely watched will almost invariably GAIN weight, not lose it?   Very strange.  Of course, I had one of my…"

Vicky Hay replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"Yes. A German shepherd has an appetite like a corgi's. And a greyhound will do anything and eat anything just to get along with you. But seriously...that is such a weird development. Still, one would think if their appetite is good and they…"

Laura Robertson replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"Sorry I should have mentioned that he is a mix, so he is bigger than a normal corgi! He was around 49 before I noticed the weight loss, when I weighed him again he weighed 43. something. So not as extreme but still odd. He wasn't overweight…"

Laura Robertson replied to Laura Robertson's discussion Sudden increase in appetite?
"No he is definitely enough, because I double checked that and increased it slightly to see if it'd alleviate the problem and it didn't. I don't really think it's the move either, but I guess we will see if anything changes"

"Hahah I bet they were okay with that! No, I'm using the same measuring cup and in fact I increased the food amount a little bit just to see if it would stop the behavior but it hasn't"
