One thing that Sammy loves is his AM and PM walks. So much so that when it's harness/leash time he is SO wound up with barking and bouncing that he can become dangerous to hands hooking him up. The hands could be collateral damage LOL.

It's obviously total excitement about the walk---or is it pooping? Within just a minute of so on the walk we have pooping. How do I calm him down without raining on his excitement or delaying his pooping?

Hi Everyone, and Happy 2021 to you all! It has been a VERY long time since I have been on this page, either to update or even to look at it, but both of our beloved Pembroke Welsh Corgis are getting on in years.
Hi Everyone, and Happy 2021 to you all! It has been a VERY long time since I have been on this page, either to update or even to look at it, but both of our beloved Pembroke Welsh Corgis are getting on in years. I can't believe that the last time I was here, they were both, essentially, puppies. Griffin will be turning 11yo in February, and Violet turned 8 this past November. Griffin is acting every bit the Senior Corgi these days, sleeping most of the day each day, and has a very hard time getting up after his nightly sleep or after any of his many naps during the day. He can barely stagger along when he first starts moving, but does get better after he moves a bit. Violet, thank goodness, is still a feisty girl, and makes a lot of noise and lets us all know she's around.

My heart is already starting to break at the thought of the day when Griff will no longer be with us. I'm so hoping that he will stay happy and not hurting for a long time to come, but I'm afraid that may not be the case. My wife doesn't want me thinking this way, and says I should just be happy while he is still here. She is right, of course, but I'm wondering what any of you have done to make the ultimate decision in their Corgi's lives. I have had many dogs in my life, but circumstances have conspired such that I have never had to make that choice, consciously. Our Lab mix went to the Rainbow Bridge almost exactly 7 years ago, but she had ended up with some sort of auto-immune disease and within a few days, she went from completely healthy to paralyzed and convulsing, and we had no choice but to put her out of her pain, with no time to think about it. But that is the closest I have ever had to come to make that choice. My heart is heavy already when considering what we may have to do in the not too distant future...
Earstag:mycorgi.com,2020-12-19:1150197:BlogPost:20647332020-12-19T19:52:09.000Zalan m jenkins sr.http://mycorgi.com/profile/alanmjenkinssr

I was really disappointed there was nobody on here that had any knowledge about rectal hernia surgeries. Especially seeing most people on here breed or get dogs through breeders.
I was really disappointed there was nobody on here that had any knowledge about rectal hernia surgeries. Especially seeing most people on here breed or get dogs through breeders. Just wanted to post that I finally had to go through with my dog's surgery. I never had him neutered because I was certain I would eventually have him mate and have babies, but that never happened and the Vet saw that he was struggling to defecate and blood was in his urine. The vet actually caught all this in time and he was neutered at that vet visit.

Following his neutering his prostate went back to normal size because prior to that it had enlarged. Ironically after the neutering his rectal area tore during him trying to have a bm. He never had issues before so I was concerned the Vet messed him up and still question that to this day. Chili was 8 yrs old at the time this all happened. It's like no one really gives you specific advice on anything they just tell you to get your dog neutered to avoid cancer and what not.

I'm here to help anyone else who allows their dog to go unneutered this long. I would say after 5 yrs old time is up and the dog needs to be neutered. It is a very easy procedure for the vet and they check the dog's blood work prior to the surgery.

As far as the rectal hernia surgery I waited and Chili was on Miralax 1 tsp 2x daily for a year then suddenly he got backed up more than usual and he couldn't go. You could see the enlargement of stool in his bottom area. Basically I should have just done the surgery before I just thought maybe we could correct it. Again no one to talk to about this. I researched, but having someone on here would have been better.

After the surgery which was a morning surgery, took 1 hour and I got him back later in the day Chili's incision seemed good, but a day or 2 after had some fluid called seroma that seeped out for about a week then finally stopped. The incision was to the left of his rectum and was vertical. They had him on vetprofen 2x daily and tramadol 1 xdaily. He did that for a week, but the pain was not over. Chili had surgery pain for 3 to 4 wks following surgery and I stopped the pain meds around that time. I was carrying Chili upstairs for up to the 4 wks due to the pain, but gradually got him going up 1x daily for a week, then 2x daily then he does ok on stairs. Really would also like for the surgery to stick seeing how it always has a chance of failing. The vet and not the specialist suggested he had a back issue during this time of pain which he had never had before and he might need to see a neurologist. I was not happy with that. That of course was not true he was still having pain from the surgery. I of course didn't do that because we weren't sure what it was and couldn't afford that.

Overall I'm grateful for the surgery and that I went through with it. It cost $2500 plus more for the extra pain meds. Chili definitely is not the same. He has a little trouble going upstairs and doesn't run quite as fast, but I'm still trying to get him better. It hasn't even been 2 months yet. I just never thought I would be so excited for him to have proper bm's. He's pretty much back to his old self and I hope he will continue to thrive and enjoy more life.

I will update this with any changes that occur, but if everything goes great and continues to get better I'll let you all know too!

Ashton left us far too soon. Sunday he was playing with Alphonse and Pinoko, Monday morning he was sick. Tuesday night he was gone. And gone with him a big piece of our hearts.

He was such a good boy, the absolute best. He loved to visit with his dog friends but loved to visit with people even more. He enjoyed a bunch of different canine sports including agility, herding, coursing, rally, trick dog and obedience. Ok, not obedience so much, but he did really well at it! Ashton was happiest just being with us no matter what we were doing. Even if that meant putting on silly costumes for social media posts!

Incredibly smart, handsome, and packed full of charisma, he's the guy you'd take home to meet the folks. A natural leader, he kept the puppies in line and they never questioned it. He was a whole lot of personality packed into a stumpy body. He loved lots and was loved in return.

We are completely heartbroken. Words cannot express the depth of our sadness. You left us too soon, Ashton. The weight of your loss is almost too much for us to take. We miss you so much. We love you now and always.

Thank you for sharing your life with us. 10 years was not enough. You were the true embodiment of your Cowboy Bebop namesake, Ein. Rest In Peace, Ashton. You’ll always be in our hearts.

Admittedly, I did not sit on the floor and weep for half an hour, the way I did when we had to dispatch Walt the Greyhound -- but that was quite a shock, since Walt did not appear to be sick despite being filled with cancer. With Cassie, the poor little critter, the time had obviously come.

A day or two passed. Ruby continued to be...well...Ruby: a stuffed animal into which you poured food, who lived underneath the toilet in the back bathroom and most of the time preferred to stay there.

Another couple days passed. And one afternoon I drove into the garage, parked the tank, opened the kitchen door, and...LO! There was Ruby standing there, wagging her butt as though she had a tail!

???? This little ghost never comes to the door. But here she was, just as though she were...a dog.

Now, with every new day her personality has developed.

She never had any interest in balls. One of the neighbor kids apparently threw a small hard rubber ball over the back wall and forgot about it. Now she finds it and examines it. I toss it. She sort of chases it. But it's too hard and heavy for her to get much purchase on it.

So I got her a tennis ball. (Yes, I do know: never leave a tennis ball where a dog can find it and chew on it.)

That bouncy thing opened some kind of a door in her doggy mind. In short order she learned a whole series of "tricks": Git it! and Bring it here! and Can i have it? What doggy joy!

And then, incredibly, within another day she learned Where is it? and Find!

Yes. No joke. I couldn't believe it.

These are commands I taught Anna the German Shepherd in puppyhood. Anna sprang from a line of search & rescue dogs. Her dam had an impressive record of finds, though most of the victims were dead by the time the humans reached them. Originally my idea was that I would take search & rescue training myself, get Anna trained for the job, and voilà! Gainful employment.

Unfortunately, before long I got a full-time teaching job at the local university, which put the eefus on the rescue dog scheme. Probably a good thing: Anna was at the height of her prowess at the time of the Oklahoma City bombing, and was still holding forth on September 11, 2001. I doubt I would have had the psychological strength to hold up in those conditions.

At any rate, here suddenly we have a corgi who lives under a toilet...finding a lost object on command. She will respond to where is it by going to the ball and pointing out where it lays. And to find, sometimes she'll do that and sometimes she'll pick it up and bring it to me. Git it! always evokes a retrieval.

I don't know if she can generalize the "find" command to anything other than the ball -- Anna would try to find anything, as long as she knew approximately what we were looking for.

But isn't that interesting? A corgi that could, in theory, be trained for search-&-rescue work.

Oh well. Back on earth, Ruby comes more and more into her own with each passing day. She no longer spends every living breathing moment in the back bathroom. Often she comes out and hangs around with the human. At night, instead of crawling down to the far end of the bed and clinging to the edge of the mattress as though she felt she needed to be ready to jump off at instant notice, she's taken up a position in the middle of the bed. Not chummy enough (yet) to serve as a bed-warmer, but she's getting there.

I'm so sorry you have lost such a good Corgi. It is always hard. When ever possible, I find it helps to get another dog if you can. Puppies are great but rescued adults can work out very well.
several more years with him so I am trying to take very good care of him and his mixed-breed hound sister Reese. If you are young enough, I would suggest that you consider getting another do and of course a Corgi if possible. I am now too old to ever get another puppy but as long as I can live independently, I want to have at least one dog. I know that Noodles isn't alone in Heaven as there are many other good Corgies and other dogs up there with him. I am very sorry for your loss. Best wishes, Lois Allen

She was almost 13 years old and had suffered from adrenal cancer (we think: there's some confusion about that) for the past four and a half months. She lived about as long as corgis can be expected to live (the median life span is 12.6 years), and she had an exceptionally good life.

And she was an exceptionally good dog: one of the two finest dogs I've ever had the privilege to live with.

Ruby the Corgi Pup now accedes to the throne as Queen of the Universe. Though she's typically bossy, it's unclear whether she quite knows how to rule all of creation in the absence of her predecessor. She seems puzzled as to exactly the extent of her considerably expanded powers and how to manage the lowly human. She will, being a corgi, soon get it down, I"m sure.

Already feeling lonely, I looked at the site operated by Ruby's breeder. She now wants $2,000 per pup, which of course is wayyyyyy beyond my means. So unless I stumble across another rescue corgi (Cassie came from the Humane Society), I guess I'm out of the corgi game. Well, not quite, as long as Ruby survives -- presumably another 5 to 8 years.

So it goes.

Was pleased to see some people are still lurking here at MyCorgi.com. Facebook is all very nice, I'm sure...but I find it fairly overwhelming. Just since yesterday evening, 178 messages have come in, most of them the most pointless kind of ephemera. He has been a awesome owner all these years. I was hoping to move to America with him who knows?. If anything should happen to me Dad will fall apart.
He doesn't seem to care much for other dogs, I notice he tend to play more with females, at least he is not being aggressive to them.

He started an annoying habit to bark for attention, usually I ignore him when he started barking. but this becomes a problem when I bring him to the office. will need to work on this later.

Commands mastered:

down, sit, hand, high five, spin, turn, stand, wait, come, look at me, let go, leave it, nose

(though he sometimes grumble or try to cheat)

halfway through: stay, up, rollover, leave it (for tissue and fabrics), fetch, take it, give me

Desensitisation:

* he HATES clipping nail. especially on his front paw, he will bite hard. back paw he whines but tolerates.

* he Loves loves to bite and chew on tissue so working on that

* working on getting used to having his feet wiped after going outdoor

* getting used to brushing

* quite used to being pets, now seem to love it a lot!

* seems curious with kids though I do not let any toddler/kids held him yet, too wary of that

* not barking at vacuum and hair blower

* taking him to his first full body bath tomorrow at a groomer (fingers crossed he enjoys it)

* he always tries to pounce play on my bunny so keeping them separate

overall he is quite well behaved despite some naughty & stubborn streaks (just look at this face)

*Let Go

*Look at Me

*Give Me

*Come

*Latte (his name, cue to look at me)

All these basic commands need to be taken a step further in different room and with distance.

Commands that need to further be reinforced:

*Leave it

*Come

*Follow me (Heel)

*Take it

*Get it

*Off (Stop jumping at people)

*Slow (Taking food from hand slowly, 80% there)

Behavior Problem:

*To Stop him going for my hair

*Get him to follow me on leash (he will just sit there and plant his butt :(......)

Socialisation progress: Been having him listened to thunders, cats, fireworks and baby crying audio. Been letting him sniff my bunny and hold him back when he tried to jump. Seen man, woman come and go to our house. taking him out once hes fully vaccinated,

Desentisize:

*He doesn't bark at vacuum

*He is somewhat okay with nail trim (Need to work on back leg)

*He is ok with being held, rolled over, belly up, eyelid check

*Need to work with the gum & ear checking

*Need to work at brushing his fur (He tries to chew on the brush)

*Need to work on tryin to lie down with the human

All in All he is a very good boy, I hope he will stay that way and not get too much into adolescent issue. Meanwhile all I can do is be prepared for anything that may arise.

Most importantly, lots of play, talking to him and pets to bond (and ofc with food too)

Feel free to comment/give me advice :D There is still a lot of socialiisation to do! whew!

1. Should I take him to office immediately or wait until he is a bit older and trained?

2. Should I take him to office with me everyday? or just sparingly? I fear if I take him everyday he will have separation anxiety. If I leave him at home all the time he may not be as attached.

3. How many times a day should I feed him? some resource says 3, some says 2 is ok.

4. What brand should I get? I wanted to get orijen but its too expensive for me (import tax is too high in this country)

5. At that age can he already walk on the streets? again I find conflicting information

There are many many many more questions but a lot of them I will align with the vet. Any advice would be great!

Hi everyone,

I visited the message board to see happy stories of Corgis and try to bring my spirits.

Two days ago, in the afternoon, we unexpectedly had to put our Corgi to sleep. He was almost 14 years old. My wife, kids, and I all knew the time was coming but never expected such a turn of events. I work from home and left my office to take a break. Our Corgi, Toby, always lounged by our front door, on the cool tile floor. I noticed that he was panting and breathing quite heavily. As I got closer, I realized that he had urinated on the floor where he lay. I immediately knew something was wrong. I thought maybe he had a seizure. I called the vet and they suggested I bring him in.

The vet examined him and said his temperature was low and his gums looked pale. She decided to do blood work and x-rays. As she left the room, she said he was "critical". My heart sank. A short time later, the vet brought me back to see the x-rays. There was a large tumor on his spleen and a large mass in his abdomen that had pushed his organs to one side. I immediately began to break down. She went on to say that he most likely had Hemangiosarcoma and that one of the tumors had ruptured and he was bleeding internally. My options were not good. He could have surgery to remove his spleen but, with the cancer spreading, he wouldn't live but a few months anyway. Plus, he would mostly likely be in pain and not a great quality of life.

I felt like a wimp because I literally could make the decision myself. I spoke to my wife and older son who has spent the most time with Toby. The only consensus was to do the humane thing and end his suffering. It was so unexpected as he showed no signs of pain; was active that morning, ate his breakfast and played with our other dogs.

Two days later I still question my decision but logically it was the only one to make. Thanks for listening everyone.I can barely concentrate on work and home at the moment. I hope it gets easier with time.

The condo is right next to the greenbelt, where I pictured some lovely walks with my girl. I packed boxes and boxes and finally the day came for the movers to take it away and for us to get in the car and drive to our new home. It took 3 days because driving alone is tiring and my friend needed to stretch her legs every couple of hours. We finally arrived and she romped around in her new home, shaking her squeaky toy for me to chase her. She liked her new home!! We went for dinner at some friends that night and we were all so happy I'd moved back. Next day I ran some errands and that night Gracie threw up her dinner. I put it down to travel stress . Next day she ate her breakfast so I thought all was well. Movers came with all of our boxes and I was busy organizing and unpacking. Gracie didn’t want to go for a walk and she didn’t want her supper. Again, I thought it was all the activity of the day and new surroundings and maybe she was still tired from the road trip. I cuddled her on the couch and tried to make her feel relaxed. At bedtime, she went off to the second bedroom but I brought her into my bedroom and settled her in her bed. Just before midnight, I woke to her struggling to breathe. I called an emergency vet and they said to bring her right in. She couldn't move and looked so scared and I had to pick her up and carry her to the car and lift her in. I got to the vet and they helped carry her in. Then the news I couldn’t believe, her chest cavity was full of blood and squeezing her heart and more blood in her stomach and spots on her spleen and it all indicated cancer and a tumor that had likely ruptured. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. She had gone into cardiac arrest and they had brought her back. My baby was so sick and I had no idea and I had to decide whether they should try to keep her alive until a surgeon in the morning could try to save her. She went into cardiac arrest again and they brought her back again. I watched my baby in such a terrible state and I asked the vet what he would do if she were his dog. He said she was suffering and heroic surgery likely wouldn’t save her. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to my sweetheart but I didn’t want her to be in pain or scared. I loved her so much. My best friend came out in the middle of the night to be with me and say goodbye to my darling. I’m having trouble getting thru this terrible loss. She never even got to see the beautiful green space we were going to walk on. She was only 10 years, 8 months. I just wasn’t prepared to lose my dog 3 days after we started our wonderful new life. It’s just so hard. We went everywhere together.
