Two years later and I thought that it might be interesting to take a trip down Puppy Expenses Lane again. This time I hope to see if the myth that a second dog costs substantially less the the first has any weight. Some of you may remember that our first puppy, Killian, cost us $2,857.70 once we had tallied up all the expenses (see the original blog entry for the…

Two years later and I thought that it might be interesting to take a trip down Puppy Expenses Lane again. This time I hope to see if the myth that a second dog costs substantially less the the first has any weight. Some of you may remember that our first puppy, Killian, cost us $2,857.70 once we had tallied up all the expenses (see the original blog entry for the categorical breakdown).

What you see below might surprise some of you. To try and give some context to the numbers, I've also gone to the trouble of tallying up the NON-puppy, plain old maintenance expenses incurred by our two dog household over the last year.

April 2010 to March 2011 - (Better known here as the Year of Adding the Viceroy):

Initially, that number isn't too bad. It's only $319.69 more than Killian's start up costs were the previous year, and Killian's care is included in that number. But think about the following:

Murphy was half as much as Killian (Killian's puppy bottom cost us $1,000!)

We had nearly all the supplies we needed -- like crate, collar, grooming supplies... it was more of a "Just add puppy food" situation.

So how could the expenses be so high? Well, Murphy showed up sick. VERY sick. And he has a tendency to get sick often. Add all those vet visits up and the costs start to climb quickly!

The picture does get a little nicer in year three though. Maintenance costs are much easier to stomach when looked at over annually like this:

April 2011 to March 2012

Bottom Line:

Dogs are expensive! (But you probably didn't need me to tell you that!)
Venting: Dogsittingtag:mycorgi.com,2011-02-15:1150197:BlogPost:8964002011-02-15T15:44:59.000ZJessicahttp://mycorgi.com/profile/JessicaLeibovitz

Last night our friends dropped off their Shiba Inu that we have agreed to watch while they vaca in another part of the country. We knew their girl got along with our boys through a few meet and sniff sessions we had arranged over the past few weeks prior but now that her owners are gone I'm starting to lose my mind. In the past 12 hours she's already managed to pee on all of the carpets, the kitchen floor twice and our bed... TWICE. It's not like the proper precautions weren't taken either…

Last night our friends dropped off their Shiba Inu that we have agreed to watch while they vaca in another part of the country. We knew their girl got along with our boys through a few meet and sniff sessions we had arranged over the past few weeks prior but now that her owners are gone I'm starting to lose my mind. In the past 12 hours she's already managed to pee on all of the carpets, the kitchen floor twice and our bed... TWICE. It's not like the proper precautions weren't taken either - she's doing this all in front of either me or my boyfriend and within a half hour of going outside. ;;sigh;;

To make matters worse she's taken to bullying Murphy, (IE he's laying in his bed completely out of the way and she marches over and kicks him out, tosses the bed around for a minute and then goes away. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.) In addition to all of this lovely behavior, she can jump all of the gates we have and she doesn't listen to women so she's been ignoring any commands I've given her while listening astutely to my boyfriend. And while I thought the shiba was a relatively quiet breed, she's been barking pretty much non-stop. It's a total nightmare.

When she isn't peeing or being utterly defiant she's running around like a lunatic and stirring both Killian and Murphy into a frenzy - eventually the boys have a enough of it and lay down but she jumps them to start playing. Let me tell you how fun that was at 2AM.

Hopefully this behavior runs its course and things return to some normalcy soon. I'm tired and sick of grabbing new rolls of paper towels from the basement but I don't know what else to do!
Viceroy Murphy the Mercilesstag:mycorgi.com,2011-01-04:1150197:BlogPost:8312702011-01-04T02:45:50.000ZJessicahttp://mycorgi.com/profile/JessicaLeibovitz

So far he is a VERY vocal, brave and small boy. He's about 7 1/2 weeks old and he's only a touch over 3 pounds. He's insanely licky though. His personality is totally different from his older brother Killian that's for sure.

In keeping with the spirit of Killian's full name (Baron Killian von Fussybottom), he will get a title and descriptor. We're waiting to nail down the name before either of those though... want to make sure it sounds okay. ;-)

The running list of names we have so far is:

Murphy
Brogan
Kirby
RJ Dio

Any other suggestions are welcome!

Picture of him after Killian decided to give him a good drool-on:

Just about one year ago I decided that I wanted to get a dog. Not just any dog - I had red and white Pembrokes on the brain. I did all sorts of research: How to potty train? Answered! So what have I decided to do?

For all of you new-to-the-puppy world I've gone back and compiled all of my expenses. Nope, not just most. Not just the big ones. ALL of them - here for you to gander at. Could you say I overspent in some areas? Absolutely! But that's kind of the fun here. :) To be as helpful as possible, please keep in mind that these are expenses incurred in the greater Boston area up to his first birthday.

Let's play accountant shall we?
