A little piece of our roof collapsed just now, and Bella was the first one to investigate, of course. Bella is like our little Sherlock Holmes. Whenever a mystery needs solving, she's the first on scene. In this mystery, she sniffed everything on sight and ran straight upstairs to investigate further. Which I thought was amazing. She made the connection between the things falling from the roof and the upstairs level. Hmmm.

There's about a foot of snow out there, possibly more and Bella's loving every inch of it. Granted she has a difficult time trying to stay above the snow (she's learned to walk on top of our footsteps now to keep her head above), but loves it nonetheless. She even tries catching our snowballs in the snowball fights. It's too bad that I don't have a camera anymore to capture the memories, but there's no way this memory will be forgotten soon. :D

Tomorrow is Bella's gradutation day, and so far she hasn't shown any signs of improvement since we left Petsmart last Saturday to today. I mean, she's doing pretty good with "Leave it", and surprisingly she'll come when called when I'm too far away in public. But suddenly she decides she won't sit for me, and she will not stay put for five seconds before pouncing on me for a treat. I have worked all week to get her ready for tomorrow, and she just doesn't seem to understand what I'm trying to…

But suddenly she decides she won't sit for me, and she will not stay put for five seconds before pouncing on me for a treat. I have worked all week to get her ready for tomorrow, and she just doesn't seem to understand what I'm trying to tell her. It's not a problem that she doesn't understand the command... so what's going on. It's 7:44. I have three more hours to work on her before I sleep. Then I have about four hours tomorrow to review some quickies before graduation day.

They say dogs are like their masters. I'm really slow in school too. No matter how many times somebody helps me go over some math problem, I just can't seem to catch on. It takes a lot of explaining every single detail for me to understand how to get it right. Maybe I have to go back to phase one with Bella and explain every little detail until she finally understands. Hopefully, I can make enough process for her to graduate from puppy school tomorrow. I really don't want her to be left out and not graduate with her classmates. That's be so sad to watch.Slow Progress, But Progress Stilltag:mycorgi.com,2009-11-14:1150197:BlogPost:5584412009-11-14T23:43:07.000ZBella & Hayeshttp://mycorgi.com/profile/EmilyLeinheiser
Next Saturday is Bella's graduation from Petsmart's puppy training class. Since we missed three of the eight classes, our trainer took some time today in class to review a few things with us. Bella and I have to work super hard this week so she can graduate with the rest of her class.
Though Bella is behind in class, I feel that we're making progress in getting her better socialized. She actually played today with the other puppies. She got a little overwhelmed by the end of class and started snapping at all her classmates when they wouldn't leave her alone. Bentley the Bulldog gave Bella a run for her money it seems. But I can't even begin to explain how shocked I was when she practically dragged me into the training room and started pouncing and interacting with the others. And as we entered Petsmart a few minutes before class began, Bella even took the initiative to go sniff some of the older, bigger dogs. I was so proud. One Step Forward... When I adopted my first dog, a Black Lab/Dalmatian mix at four months, I began training her right away. She knew most of the basic commands, and she learned with lightning speed. Even now at two years, she's still soaking up new commands like a sponge. It's amazing to watch her! With Bella though, she doesn't seem to catch on. She'll finally understand a command, so I move on to the next step and she'll look as if she forgot the last step. I know she didn't forget, but we're constantly…

Even now at two years, she's still soaking up new commands like a sponge. It's amazing to watch her! With Bella though, she doesn't seem to catch on. She'll finally understand a command, so I move on to the next step and she'll look as if she forgot the last step. I know she didn't forget, but we're constantly struggling with her grasping the concepts of each new command. I'm not going too fast and I'm not going too slow for her. We're working step-by-step along with what our obedience trainer has us do, and I always review even after the class has moved on. It's just how training goes. I just don't understand why Bella isn't grasping the concepts. When I thought she was doing pretty well walking in public and the down command at home, I try reviewing the down command and she acts as if she has no idea what to do! Gah! Dogs really, really are the true test of patience. ;PSocialization before shots?tag:mycorgi.com,2009-11-12:1150197:BlogPost:5567232009-11-12T01:17:45.000ZBella & Hayeshttp://mycorgi.com/profile/EmilyLeinheiser
When we took Bella to the vet for her shots, they told me not to begin socializing her in unfamiliar places until her shots her complete. Which is totally understandable, I wouldn't want little Bella to attract a deadly disease out in the open. But in that time when the vet told me not to take her out, I missed a very imporant time when I should have socialized her more. Now we have a 7 month old puppy who is terrified of other dogs due to the lack of socialization. I feel as if I should have…

But in that time when the vet told me not to take her out, I missed a very imporant time when I should have socialized her more. Now we have a 7 month old puppy who is terrified of other dogs due to the lack of socialization. I feel as if I should have still taken her out, but at least just carried her around. We didn't know many other dogs in the area, as we live on a pretty secluded farm, so I couldn't have invited other dogs over for a playdate.

Bella is now enrolled in an obedience class to help socialize her better, but she won't play with the other dogs and she's beginning to get aggressive. My trainer won't acknowledge the aggressive behavior, and it's becoming inscreasingly worse. I'm not sure how to address the issue other than slowly introducing her to other dogs. She's perfectly fine with the dogs that she's met when she was younger than four months, but any other dog she has major issues with.Breedingtag:mycorgi.com,2009-11-10:1150197:BlogPost:5560502009-11-10T17:58:01.000ZBella & Hayeshttp://mycorgi.com/profile/EmilyLeinheiser
Whenever I mention Bella's heat cycle, my dad will suggest that we should breed her when she gets older. I can understand why he would want to breed Bella, she's just a joy for all of us and pretty soon I'll be moving out and taking both Bella and Gracie with me. I don't blame him for wanting a little Bella for himself when both me and Bella are gone. But I don't know... there are so many risks, expenses, and worries put into it... and so much time and effort. I know my dad has raised quite a…

I know my dad has raised quite a few other animals from birth, but I think it would be a little to much for the rest of the family. I think it would be much easier on all of us if we just got her spayed and dad could find another corgi for himself, just as special as Bella is.Foot Injury and Ms. BellaRellatag:mycorgi.com,2009-11-10:1150197:BlogPost:5559272009-11-10T13:36:22.000ZBella & Hayeshttp://mycorgi.com/profile/EmilyLeinheiser
I injured my foot yesterday, though I'm not sure how. I have an appointment set up later today to get it checked out. But anyway, when I woke up this morning to my hyperactive Bella jumping and hoping all over the bed, I kicked her off so she wouldn't accidentally hurt my foot further. I limped over to the couch, and it seemed as if Bella sensed that I was hurt and she instantly changed her attitude. She hopped onto the couch next to me, and circled around my foot before settling down and gently licked the exact spot where my foot was hurt. I had never seen her act so calm, and it really shocked me when she started licking the exact spot of my injury. I always celebrate Halloween with my dogs, but I missed this one due to a short family vacation. I felt so bad about being unable to have my dogs with us, so I found this amazing local pet supply store and bought these cute little bags of a ton of different dog bones and dog treats.
When I got home, my brother and I helped me divide the treats between my two girls and set them on chairs around the house and let them go to each chair as if they were going house-to-house on Halloween. They had a blast, and it was also great to help Bella work on the "down" command. I think this is a tradition in the making. :)
