Well, it's hard to believe a whole year has gone by and the 2010 Florida Corgi Picnic is just around the corner!!

I just read the update from Celeste and there are now 245 people and 157 Corgis registered to attend!! Last year she had 255 people and 175 Corgis so it looks like she's closing in on those numbers again this year! It's a GREAT fund raising event for Corgi Aid and Sunshine Corgi Rescue.

We're so looking forward to it!! And hope to see many of you…

Saturday night Dawn and I decided to get up early on Sunday and drive to Key West. From her mom's house in Miami it was only a 3 hour drive. After parking at Mallory Square we walked the length of Duval Street with Soffie & Griffyn. They were a show stopper all along the walk. And they are the subject of many photos of those who stopped us several times over to pet them and ask about them!! It was a fun day! : )…

Smudlik the daschund is on meds for seizures for one month, because they are not 100% positive that he came in contact with the Bufo. He was lucky - they think that, if he did come in contact with it, it was peripheral. Because my friends husband had picked up the frog with a rag to get rid of it, but then set the rag down on the car seat where Smudlik sits when he goes for a ride with them. So to be on the safe side they're keeping him on the seizure meds, then will take him off and see what happens. If he doesn't have another seizure then they'll be fairly sure it was from the contact with the Bufo.

They are evidently prevelent in South Florida and the poison they emit from their skin can be DEADLY!!! Here is a link to a webpage that tells what to do if your dog, cat or any pet for that matter (and maybe us humans too??) come in contact with one.

Sad but true I’m afraid…. So I am going to post a link at the end of this blog and hope that some if not all who read this blog will read the article attached and recognize whether their own corgis just might be overweight.

As many of you may know, Soffie suffered a partial acl tear one year ago. Fortunately we avoided surgery. But, at the time the orthopedic specialist examined her she point blank told us her weight (39 lbs) was a contributing factor to this type of injury. And instructed us to put her on a diet where she could lose 10 pounds!! We took her instruction very seriously and that very day put Soffie on a strict diet. And as some of you also know, over the course of this past year she lost that 10 lbs!

I read so many blog posts and discussions started here on mycorgi.com about … possible acl injuries, limping, hip problems ( I know that there’s nothing we can do if it is a genetic issue ). I can’t help but wonder how many could have been avoided simply by weight control.

I’ve also read many blogs and discussions asking about “how much should my corgi weigh?” “Is my corgi overweight?” “How much should I feed my corgi??” “Do green beans really help??”

I have watched so many videos of corgis on You Tube etc… and honestly I am so amazed at just how many “chubby”, “hefty” downright “obese” corgis there are!! So….. I guess that man on the beach in Venice isn’t too far off in his perception!!

Anyway…. I hope that my post doesn’t offend anyone here. I hope you all understand that I write this out of concern and love. And with hopes that when you read this article you will take a look and your beloved corgis and do what is best for them.

And I also want to point out an interesting thing about the bee that stung Griffyn. It was dead!!! Apparently a bee's stinger can still "do it's thing" even after the bee is dead.

Poor little guy.... he was curious, of course, and as soon as his nose got up against the bee, and before Dawn and my sister knew what was happening ZAP! He didn't cry out... but he ran out into the yard kind of shaking his head and licking his nose. And sure enough the stinger was right there in his lip right by his nose. Dawn immediately checked the internet, and we learned what to do. Fortunately, he didn't have any kind of reaction other than a slight bit of swelling that came up after we removed the stinger but went down very quickly after that too. We were lucky that he didn't have an allergic reaction but just to be on the safe side, we're definitely going to be getting some benedryl to keep in the house.

There were a couple different sites that gave different suggestions. One of them said to put vineger on the sting and another suggested ice. And actually those were the two things we did since it didn't appear that he was in distress, just in discomfort. But I think this link gives good advice and a good description on how to remove the stinger. So.... here's the link ~~> http://en.allexperts.com/q/Dogs-701/Wasp-sting.htmHappy Birthday Griffyn!tag:mycorgi.com,2010-01-15:1150197:BlogPost:5943082010-01-15T19:53:41.000ZJudi, Dawn, Soffie & Griffynhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/Judi

3 Years old today! Wow... Where has the time gone! It seems like only yesterday when we drove up to meet you and you came bounding out of the kennel along with your 8 siblings! You # 9 of 9!!!

We had picked you from a photograph Lee had sent us (in our photos here on my corgi) but we wanted to bring Soffie up to meet you. It's always been a mystery to me how you instinctively knew that YOU were the chosen one. But you did! Soffie was very stand-off-ish but you were relentless!! You pursued her, coaxed her, challenged her, charmed her..... and at one point even did a back flip!! (you can see this in our My Guy video here on my corgi) You did it! You won her over!!

You had my (and Dawn's) heart right from the start. You pressed your little face up against ours when each of us picked you up for the first time. That sweet little face with the black splotch on your nose that gives you that crooked looking little expression. There was no way we could resist that face!

We had to wait 4 more weeks before we could go back and pick you up. That day was an adventure. You didn't like your crate too much at first but you settled down very quickly. We got stuck in traffic on I75. A brush fire had closed the highway. And you stayed very quiet during several hours of "creep and beep"! When we pulled off and waited in a rest area you and Soffie shared your first meal together. So cute eating your kibble from the top of a plastic take out container we had had lunch in earier that day.

You fit into our family like an old soul! You are our clown, our snuggler, our charmer and love bug!! And best of all you're Soffie's best friend!! But we knew that right from the start!!

Let me first start by saying... our Soffie is a tall girl and quite a bit larger boned than our Griffyn and weighs in at 38lbs. 3 weeks ago Soffie pulled up lame on her hind left leg. This following a full tilt run across the front yard. Hard to know exactly how the injury actually occured but.... the end result was a torn cruciate ligament. We had an appointment this past monday with an orthopedic surgeon (believe me we had already done so much research on this injury!! Pros / cons to surgery. Pros / cons to controlled maintenance) And here is a direct quote from the surgeon report and the very first thing listed on the Surgeons recommendations for Soffie's recovery.

"Soffie presented to the FVRC for evaluation of a left hind limb lameness. Her general physical exam was unremarkable, except she is moderately overweight. The orthopedic exam showed effusion (increased joint fluid) in both knees, but only the left knee was painful. There was no instability elicited. We suspect that Soffie has a partial tear of the left cranial cruciate ligament. Although surgery is an option, it is reasonable to give her time to see if the lameness progresses.

Recommendations:
1. Weight loss is the most important aspect of treatment. You should be able to easily feel the ribs when you pet her and she should have a visible waist when viewed from above. Begin by decreasing her food intake by 20%. If you would like to offer treats, please use rice cakes, carrots, or take kibble from the measured meal. She should be weighed in 2 weeks to assess progress. If she is not losing weight, then decrease intake by an additional 10%" (end of quote from surgeon)

Soffie's prognosis is the same with or without surgery. Arthritis!!! And she is only 3years 7 mos!!! And there are signs she will have problems with her right hind leg too! And her weight is the largest contributing factor!!

We're dealing with what we have to do now. And that is keeping her totally restricted. We have a pen in the house to keep her in a small confined area. At night she sleeps in her crate. (I miss her in bed with me!) We bought a ramp because she cannot do even 2 stairs out to the back yard! No walks! Out on a leash only for potty breaks! No jumping, no running, no sudden movements. No swimming ( until after her recheck in 4 weeks) imagine how hard that is going to be for my little swimmer when we're on vacation next week at the lake in Maine.

Anyway.... bottom line. Would we have been more diligent about her weight had we understood the consequences??? The answer is an emphatic YES!

We really didn't think Soffie was overweight because of her height! We were wrong! And I hope any and all of you out there that read this post will take heed and do what is right for your beloved corgis!!Florida Corgi Picnictag:mycorgi.com,2008-11-17:1150197:BlogPost:2344132008-11-17T18:00:00.000ZJudi, Dawn, Soffie & Griffynhttp://mycorgi.com/profile/Judi
