Poor Ein

I feel so bad for Ein today. I had left him outside this morning so I could go look at the fuse box. The fuse box has a direct view of outside. I had shut the screen door on the lower walkout so bugs wouldn't get in. I looked over at one point and Ein was happily running full speed to get to me, and smacked into the screen door. The poor guy yelped and ran away from the door. I didn't realize he wouldn't be able to see the screen on the door. Luckily it wasn't the actual glass door or he might… Continue

Thankful...musings

Today I was thinking, as I fed Buttercup, that life is a wonder and yet a puzzle. Here I am being able to afford to feed an animal food and very good food. There are so many people in the world who can not feed their children, even right here in North America. I have been blessed to be able to afford a pet and all the expenses that entails.

So why am I so special? Why do I have so much? Why was I blessed to be born in a first world nation?

I don't know why..but God in his… Continue

Mad-Dog's Summer Tank

I recently got Maddie (or Mad-Dog, as my dad and brother like to call her) a tank top for the summer. Here are some photos of her around the house in it:

Snuggling up to my leg

Tugging at her "Drooley & Bark" (i.e. Dooney & Burke) purse

Snuggling up in her favorite spot

I've added the rest of the… Continue

Cleaning Day & Play Time

Last night, I vaccuumed. It took 2 different passes in the living room to get up most of the dog hair! AACK! Molly had to show Tigger how much braver she was with the vaccuum cleaner- she's a showoff. When changing the bedsheets, does anyone else's pets get under the sheets. Tigger and the cats get made into the bed and have to shuffle out from under the fitted sheet. I used to have a cat that loved being under the sheets. He would run and jump onto the bed when he saw you bring out new sheets.… Continue

Doorbell Training

I was just wondering what the best method to training our dog not to go so crazy when the doorbell rings. He gets so excited and wants to see whos there and also wants to know who they are! He barks like crazy and will jump on people to greet them. We always tell him down, no jump. It's like a broken record everytime we have company over. I am trying to change that but need some advice. I finally just started putting him in the kitchen with the gate up so he cant get to the door and that way he… Continue

Wow.. what did we get ourselves into

Sometimes I feel like the only difference between the child we don't want to have yet and the puppy we have is the blessed kennel we can leave him in while we are at work! We are having so much fun and thankful he likes to sleep through the night but talk about a battle of wills.

I'm pretty stubborn and so is Owen. I know that Matt and I are in charge but Owen is a strong willed little character. We wanted a Corgi because I grew up with a border collie and loved those but didn't want… Continue

Frusterating lack of lap dogs... (Advice wanted).

My father has Alzheimer's, and I was hoping that my corgi would bond with him so that when my mom and I have to be gone, my dad has company. He sometimes gets confused with the TV and gets 'lost' as to what to do.

One problem, my dad wants the dog to sit with him in a wierd sort of upright position. I can't explain to him why the dog doesnt want to do this, but now the dog avoids him and he asserts that she doesn't like him.

Is there a way that I can get the dog to tolerate this, at… Continue

Musings of "An Old Woman, Learning and Timmy the Corgi"

For starters, I've made more mistakes in training my dogs than I care to recount, you have time to read or MyCorgi has space for! LOL I’m not a spring chicken as you can guess and quality of life becomes more precious to me with each passing day. Now you know where I'm coming from. What’s that got to do with training, you ask?

Well, Timmy is the first corgi I've owned, that’s what! In my former life I raised and obedience trained German Shepherd Dogs (GSD’s). My shepherds were… Continue

George is sick

George woke us up about 2:30 Monday morning throwing up and with severe diarrhea. I have never seen a dog throw up so much or have such terrible diarrhea. We called our vet on Monday as soon as she was open and she had us bring George right in. His little paws were soaked from sweating and he was very limp. I thought we were going to lose him. The vet ran tests and blood work and everything came back negative. She kept him and put him on an IV. Tuesday, she started him on small amounts of… Continue

Seriously, my dog is smart

So the last time I blogged Winnie had just started to finally get the basics of stay. We are now in an intermediate class at Pet Smart and Winnie is doing great.

Last night I had one of my proudest moments with her. We had to sit the dog and place them in a stay at one end of an aisle (while the store was open). Then I turned my back to her walked all the way down the aisle faced her and told her to "break" and then "come" and then sit ("front"). And she did it with out a thought.… Continue

Izzie Eats Everything!

So now we can add to the list 1) Japanese Beatles 2) Drywall of things Izzie will eat! Ugh. She spent an entire evening last week throwing up bugs she ate during the day while outside. Sooooooo gross. Yesterday, while I was at work, my sister left Izzie alone for 5 minutes and she chewed a huge hole through the corner of the wall in the hall way... >_< My mum and I are trying to patch the hole in the coming days. Luckily the wall was just painted so it won't be too hard to match the… Continue

It has arrived

The FURminator was delivered yesterday. The best place to go is through the MyCorgi Store which takes you to Amazon. I was so excited, I ripped open the package and began to furminate right away. Brodey had just had a bath a week ago and he was brushed out pretty well a couple days ago, but after less than 10 minutes of furminating, this is the pile I got. Amazing. So much easier than brushing and the fluff doesn't go flying around as much. Hopefully this helps with the Brodey hair that covers… Continue

BRAG!

When I first tried to put the leash on Tigger, he would turn to the corner of the door and hide his nose. Obviously, the lease was not a happy thing for him. Meanwhile, he didn't understand why Molly was jumping around and barking. In nearly 2 weeks, he's turned around! He will come to me and put his front paws up on me and wait for the leash to be latched!

I've been working on Sit/Wait by the front door so that they don't rush out. So far so good. I've got a mild choke collar on him… Continue

Taffy Goes to Omaha

Last weekend (July 18-20) Taffy and I went to Omaha to the Nebraska Kennel Club trial. It was a big trial with Conformation, Rally, Obedience and Agility all in one place. We entered all the Agility events and decided to give Rally a whirl. I figured she's an obedient dog, she should be able to do Rally, right? Well, she can do it but turns out I'm not so hot! The first day of Rally I was extremely nervous. I'm certain I did several commands totally wrong. There was a "down, walk around" and I… Continue

Fortuna Rodeo Parade

This is the fourth year that Timmy and I have marched with our nonprofit organization, "Bark for a Park", in the parade. This year was the first time that Timmy had another corgi to march with. The parade route and return is about 3.5 miles, so thank goodness, the weather was… Continue

Eating again!

The new feeding regime is working. Didi gets either her Wellness mixed with wet food (she gets a half-can and a half cup split between two meals), or mixed with unsalted, unseasoned broth (i cook alot so i have load of this around). We sit with the bowl for 10 minutes, no playing or pettings or toys or walking off to lie down. So far she's eaten her food every time. Eating beats the hell out of being bored!

This weekend I took her to my boyfriend's house to play with his Norfolk… Continue
