Normal puppy behavior or not? HELP!

So it is the one week marker of my getting my Dilly Dog and I am getting a little nervous about how nasty she can be sometimes.I understand it's still new for her and she is adjusting and such, and I originally thought it was just with food that she got a little aggressive. But it's becoming a little more often now. When I pick her up she snarls and nips at me. She plays REALLY rough for a 9 week old puppy. And when she met my neighbors 7 week old puppy, she was really nasty there too. I…

About Corgis & Crates: Answers From A Trainer

"Should we get a metal crate or a plastic one?

If people ask before they buy a crate, I suggest getting the molded-plastic, travel-style item rather than the metal cage-type, for several reasons:

1 - Plastic crates come in a larger variety of sizes;

2 - They're much less expensive (so buying two to accommodate your growing pup isn't an economic hardship);

3 - They're easier to take apart and clean.

4 - They're much lighter, so they're…

Corgis Tearing-Up the House: An Answer from a Dog Trainer

"'Help! My dog is tearing-up my house and I'm ready to kill her!'

This is one of the most common complaints driving people to call a dog trainer. And the cause is almost always the same simple thing: people give their puppies and young dogs too much freedom much too soon.

There's no one best way to train the average dog (contrary to what many author-trainers may tell you in their books). But almost all trainers agree on this: puppies should not have free run of your…

Clickers, Treats, and Tricks!

I must start by saying sorry for the HUGE post, but I'm very happy about things with Watson today!

I happened to have found the original magazines where I first saw Corgis and fell in love with them 7 years ago. It was "Training for Agility" by Popular Dogs series. It has this picture of a Tri-Coloured Pem leaping through a tire jump. After that I was curious and many hours of…

Sage passed her CGC!

Sage did a great job tonight enjoying and passing each station on her test:)

We ran into old trainers who remembered Sage from former classes that were now testing her.

Sage now can take her three local tests for Therapy Dogs, Inc. and the local Puppy Love Therapy Dogs,…

Crating dogs without crate training

I am reading all the negative reviews on Amazon about the crate I just ordered for Ein. It amazes me how many people just cage their dogs without properly crate training them. Those poor scared dogs, and these people expect these crates to be indestructible.

Please, if your going to be crating your dog, take the time to train and teach them that their crate is their safe haven. Everyone will be so much happier. Here is an article I found extremely helpful when crate training…

My Obedience Training Diary

This blog is a place for me to makes notes on what I'm learning in my 8 week obedience training course with my 4 month old corgi Ein. Feel free to read my posts and follow our obedience journey, but remember that this is very new to me, so the things I will be posting are things we are just now trying and learning.

Having some issues with behavior (biting mainly)

Hello everyone,

Normally you see my better 1/2 posting (Rebecca), but I (Kevin) am posting today to address an issue we are having with our 10 week old Pembroke "Buddy".

I am blessed to be able to work from home most of the time, so I have been able to take an active part in his life right now. I have him going outside every 2 hours for a pee break. Followed by about 20-30 min of company and then I crate him for another 90-120 min until its time to go again.

We… Continue

Biting Jess ALOT

Ok so Milo has been steadily improving, and we're now past the halfway mark to six months!

However, we're having a pretty serious and escalating problem. He has been very aggressive with Jess lately. It's strange to me, since she cares for him more than anyone else. She takes him for more walks, plays with him more, trains him more, feeds him more... you get the idea. But in the last week or so, his behavior towards her is almost constantly aggressive. Hackles up, biting hard enough… Continue

Leaving Him Home Alone

Although no one likes to do it, I think it's a reality to admit that from time to time we all have to leave our puppies home alone. Whether it's work or school (or both, for us!), life calls us out of the house to places we can't being the dog. So herein lies my frustration. Milo is still very young, only 9 weeks as of posting, so I don't trust him to have run of my apartment just yet. I don't think it's safe for him or my property. I have been trying to corral him in my kitchen, the safest… Continue
