How to train to not bark?

So I know Corgis are known to bark alot, but has anyone tried training your Corgis not to? Cadi is now 15 weeks old and hasn't barked that much, except when I'm not paying attention to her and when she's playing in the backyard.

I had a friend come over with her dog today to play with Cadi and she started barking like crazy. After 5 minutes of barking, my neighbor yelled shut up (through his window....even though it's 2pm!). So I would like to teach Cadi to lower her voice or…

Too Much Barking!!!

My dog has the loudest bark ever for such a little dog. I've been able to tolerate it, but sometimes he gets in a barking fit where every little thing sets him off. It gets kind of annoying after a while, usually after the 15th time of me sternly telling him to stop, he gets it.

My main problem is going to be…

Suggestions for aggression?

My (soon to be) 5 month old Pem, Dexter, is becoming more and more aggressive. I believe it is because of his teething, but I can't be sure. I know his teeth are really bothering him, they are falling out and growing in, and he sometimes bleeds. I feel terrible about his pain, but the way he has been acting is unacceptable. He has a Nylabone, Kong, etc. I freeze rags and give them to him, and he loves pieces of ice. I feel like I'm doing the right thing for his teeth, so could it be…

Questions for my new little boy, Roscoe!

My boyfriend Derek and I have had our little Roscoe for almost two weeks. He just had his 2 month birthday (woot) and is too cute for words. We do have some questions though, we both know that it is never too early to train so we really want to get a head start!! So, here are the questions that we have encountered so far:

-- Leash training..?! We have tried many different techniques, but nothing seems to work! As soon as that leash snaps on, Roscoe isn't moving! He walks with us just…

Venting: Dogsitting

Last night our friends dropped off their Shiba Inu that we have agreed to watch while they vaca in another part of the country.  We knew their girl got along with our boys through a few meet and sniff sessions we had arranged over the past few weeks prior but now that her owners are gone I'm starting to lose my mind.  In the past 12 hours she's already managed to pee on all of the carpets, the kitchen floor twice and our bed... TWICE. It's not like the proper precautions weren't taken either…

Bad Behavior

Pooka is 1 year, 4 months and has started barking in a bad way. She has also become more territorial and liable to pick fights with the anti-social husky that lives with us [discussed here].

Barking:

we have had to close all our blinds because if not, she just stares outside and waits for any broach on her territory and barks like mad. The more you yell, the more she barks. She… Continue

My Corgi is Annoying

Let me start off by saying I love my dog to death and he is the sweetest, most non-aggressive dog I have ever known. On the other hand, he is really annoying at the dog park. I try to take him to one at least once a week because it seems like he was socialized very well with humans, not so much with dogs, before he came to me. He LOVES playing with other dogs and running around, but the second other dogs start playing rough with one another, he starts barking. Not viciously, but more of a "Hey… Continue

The barking dog

Roxi has always been the quiet one *knocks on wood* so when we got Charlie we were not ready/used to a talker/barker to that magnitude.

I've had friends mention that we should use a shock collar on him and while I know shockers can be useful in their own right.. I wasn't ready to take it to that extreme. I remember another friend telling me how she borrowed her mother's collar and the first time she used it on her dog she cried. In the end it did work out for her and he has an… Continue

Seperation Anxiety

So training and everything has gone well and Charlie has been adapted well into the mix of daily life.

Though we've come to a brick wall and now, staring at it trying to think of the best way to confront it.

When we first got Charlie he cried a little bit in his crate at night but then that went away. At night it is fine and he understands that sometime in the morning someone will come and let him out.

The issue is when we are away.. and sometimes when we are… Continue

Great dog!

Each day Le-Le does something so cute or funny that my husband and I have to just smile or comment about how wonderful she is. We feel lucky that she is in our family. We get so many comments when we travel about how wonderful corgis are. I have to always explain she is a cardigan and a bit different from a Pembroke. She is a great traveler though she still does not like strangers too much. She does get used to the rhythm of travel, does her business quickly, likes her walks, behaves in the… Continue

Leash Training and Excessive Barking

I have only had Wrig about a month and in that time, he has been almost perfect. I love him to death, but he is proving to be very stubborn when it comes to training. He was housetrained the second day we had him and has no food aggression or any other serious problems. The shelter said he is about a year old and he is nutered.

The major dilema is excessive barking. During the day, when he is with me alone, he sleeps, follows me around and sometimes chases the cat. We go for a long… Continue

Funny thing happened yesterday

Yesterday night, I heard Ein barking in the backyard (probably at some intruders i.e. rabbits), and so for the fun of it, I decided to bark. After a pause, Ein barked in a different tone. Then my bf barked, and then Ein did a bark/howl combination. This back and forth went on 2 more times until I decided to bring Ein inside the house. And then when my bf barked once more in front of Ein, Ein looked really confused and didn't bark back.

I've decided I won't do this again because I… Continue

First week at home

So it happened, we drove for 4 hours and picked up our precious baby. The breeder crate trained him, so he was totally fine while driving. In fact, he went to sleep as soon as we put him there. He's great with potty training besides couple of accidents at home right before my eyes (it's very hard to tell when he's going as he doesn't change his position and does it in seconds). I usually let him have some water in the morning, then take him outside to relieve himself.

He hasn't been eating… Continue

Effective Bark Deterrent

This is more of a product review than a blog. My neighbors have a pitbull mix and two chihuahuas that are extremely barky. They also bark at all hours of the day and night. My neighbor previously had a third chihuahua that was more barky than the other three put together. I complained about the most barky dog to the neighbor lady and that poor little dog was never seen again. I didn't have the heart to ask what happened to it. Rather than make one of the other dogs disappear (they're all rescue… Continue

Learning the Ropes

I picked up Roscoe almost two weeks ago, on 03-14-08. So far it's been a lot of fun and a lot of learning for the both of us. When I got him, I was living with my brother in a home with a large fenced backyard, but this past weekend moved to my own apartment. The apartment area itself is pretty big (two story townhome), and we're going out on the leash when he needs to go out to potty.

This is my first inside dog, and my first time dealing with a puppy. So far it hasn't been too bad,… Continue
