Do You Have a Cat Story? Help Build a Book

Have you ever had a problem with a neighbor’s cats? How was it resolved? Or was it?

For a book on cats, a friend and I are looking for reports about issues related to cats allowed to run free. Please tell us your story. What was the problem? Did any property damage occur (to your yard, your home, your car, or whatnot)? Did any…

Rats!!!!!

Ha anyone had to deal with rats in an area that the dog can get into?

Lovely uptown Phoenix is now fully infested with roof rats, a nice little wildlife species brought here by folks moving here from other states. They look much like a Norway rat, but mercifully are somewhat less obnoxious. In their habits, they're really more like a tree squirrel than like the…

Cat Problem Self-Resolves?

One can only hope! As I mentioned the other day, after my honored neighbor (winsomely known as Other Daughter) found a dead Maine Coon Cat behind our houses and concluded one of the coyotes had done it in, she was found trailing her cat up and down the alley.

This morning a new handyman came by to give me some estimates for several small jobs that need to be done. One of the things I hoped he might do is…

How Do You Train Your Dog to Get Out in a Fire?

So I'm sitting outside on the back porch working on some stuff for one of the graphic designers, a little project that goes on and on and on and.... The house's doors are closed, because it's warm and the AC is on. I hear a beeping noise. An insistent beeping noise.

The neighbor has a truck that beeps like that. Beep beep beep freaking BEEP. It takes awhile before I realize whatever the racket is, it's not the dude's accursed truck. So I get up to investigate and lo! The house…

Recognizing Aggression In Other Dogs

Far far too often you hear about cases on the news about dog attacks or hearing stories from people you know. I can honestly say that I'm proud that I grew up around aggressive dogs and I had volunteered two years of helping aggressive dogs heal. The events that took place on Sunday made me very thankful for my experience in this field.

Sunday night a bunch of friends and family friends of my husband were having a bonfire. They also have two dogs, a German Shepard and a…

Hello! Intro (Kinda) and Vent About San Francisco, Hotels, and my Service Dog

Hello!

Ah, kinda sad that my first blog post is about a touchy issue, but I am just so livid right now, I need a safe place to let out my thoughts.

I should start with basics I guess. I'm 29 years old and my husband and I live in San Jose, California. I'm originally from Puerto Rico, and moved to San Jose for work at 27. My husband is from Indiana. I met my husband at work, and we recently got married. I've had a number of various health issues all my life, and…

Chewing on other dogs.

My puppy Charlie is 4 months old. We are dog sitting for a female boston terrier that is staying at our house. They get along great! Just one thing I noticed is the exsessive chewing and bitting he does on her. She doesn't seem to be hurt by it at all, but I am still concerned and don't know what to think of it.

Really cool National Geographic special on dogs!

I found this special made by National Geographic about how the dog came to be what they are today. There is even a section on the Pembroke Welsh Corgi :D

Welcome home, Lola!

I must say, I thought I would have made this sooner, but new dogs really do make you wonder "where did all my time go?"

Brian and I brought Lola (formerly known as Sweet Pea to the lovely ladies at the Blue Moon Sanctuary in Camdenton, MO) home from her foster family on Friday last week. It was wonderful to get to spend the weekend with her and get to know her.…

New Boyfriend Afraid of Dogs.....What to do?

First, he doesn't "hate" dogs, he's just scared of them.  He's never lived in a home with a dog.

He hasn't been to my house yet - obviously.

Even when I tell him stories of how Bear lies nose to nose with me in the morning when I'm waking up, to speed up the process so he can get food of course - he tells me that I need to not let my dogs near my face.  And how it's dangerous and that they could really bite me and do some damage.

I have never…

Dang you Uncle Frank!

So Saber didn't use to beg.  You could eat food in the same room and she wouldn't care.  Then came Easter...and Uncle Frank.  Uncle Frank has a cattle dog that he lets eat whatever he wants.  As he puts it, he could put a bowl of kibble and a bowl of human food next to each other and the dog will never go for the kibble. So why give it just kibble. *SIGH*  Either way, we knew about his habits and told him not to give our dog table scraps.  We weren't with both of them 100% of the time and I…

Training Successes

Yesterday, Ace and Grâce, his 5 month old Boxer puppy girlfriend, spent close to two hours playing and chasing each other around. They get along splendidly and Ace loves to be chased and rolled around by his long-legged lady. She is an extremely high-drive dog and her intensity is sometimes frustrating for her owner, a friend of ours who works very odd hours. As such, he does not often have time to work with her, and I have seen some of the damage she's done in his flat as a result of her…

Two College Degrees - wasted.

Evidently Goldy drank the last of the water a few moments ago because as I sat here typing up a handout for school I hear Bear quietly bark.

I ignore it - assuming it's a request for tug of war.

A few moments later - BARK BARK!   I ignore - focusing on my work.

Then, BARK BARK BARK and walks over and headbutts MY LEG!

As I look up, he walks back over to his water bowl and BARK!

I thought I was a teacher, it…

Because dogs are better right Ms. H?

As some of you may know, I teach 7th graders.  Overall the kids like me and I like them.  They love to see pictures and videos of Bear and Goldy and often if I'm out for a day, when I return they rarely ask about my health - but instead the dogs' health - making sure I haven't missed because one of my furbabies are sick.

During a punctuation lesson earlier this week on Monday we were reviewing Miss, Ms. and Mrs.

One of my students asked, "Ms. H are you…

Corgi Noir

[Last year, Bunny Butts solicited ideas for an article in the Pem-Welsh Corgi Assoc of Canada magazine.  Sam suggested "crossing the Canadian border with your corgi".  This is the final rewrite of Al's contribution.  He's been reading too much Raymond Chandler.]

Border Corgi

Yes.  Crossing the Canadian border with your…
