Walking Gwynnie around the neighborhood.

The Washington Cascades didn't have a winter in 2014-2015 (warmest Dec. and Feb. on record).  This was February 2015, conditions more like June (no exaggeration).  It's about 6 miles to the little peak at left in this photo, with 4600' of gain.  The first mile was bare trail (usually it would be many feet of snow, and I wouldn't even be able to drive to the trailhead). We'll snowshoe to that little snowy notch (Surprise Gap), then walk left up the ridge crest:…

Backcountry hiking with corgis -- some things I've learned.

We once quickly returned 2 lost pointers because the owner's cell phone# was on the collars.  Test your microchip when you visit the vet -- Gwynnie's gave no signal!

chillybuddy cooling vest    keep in plastic bag, so you can add water to wet it (crtitical; much of the cooling is evaporative).  They wilt in sun above treeline and this thing really does help.  Size Medium with a Small girth strap.

Happy Birthday Gwynnie, 10 y.o. 4/8/13

She has climbed 7 mountains this year, and we failed on an 8th.  She gets to go more often lately because Al is recuperating from last September's injury.  She's maybe a bit slower than she used to be, but I don't have to wait for her unless it's icy or really steep.  She gets the occasional "corgi toss" past certain obstacles, and seems to like snowshoe hiking.  She…

Glacier Peak Failure, Aug. 2012

Al claims the first failure on Glacier Peak's South Ridge by a Pembroke Welsh corgi without supplemental oxygen.  We could have done it easily had we been willing to walk the glacier unroped -- as many do -- but Al doesn't do glaciers unroped.  As he points out, "Nobody falls into a crevasse that they can see."  So 9200' is his high point.  Al is inspired by Sirowan's Goro,…

Ahhh, the first snowfall of....er.... OCTOBER?????

I love a holiday storm.  Nothing like seeing a nice fluffy blanket of white to really show off people's Christmas... um, Halloween decorations.  'Tis the season, when everyone loves snow to put them in the mood for caroling...I mean, Trick or Treating.  The clean white ground really shows off the green and red wreaths on the door.  Make…

Mt. Maude, our masterpiece.

If you click on these photos, you'll get a clearer, higher-resolution view.

Seven-Fingered-Jack (9077') and four-fingered Al.  Our objective, Mt. Maude, is just to the right, and 5' higher.

Al saved this trip right at the start by passing…

Another shameless dog brag

L>R:  Summit Chief, Chimney Rock, Overcoat Peak.  These are the highest peaks in the Snoqualmie Pass area of Washington's central Cascades.  We're on a little peak called Otter Point, 6360':…

And the snow just keeps on coming...

We're in a bit of a pattern here in Kentucky.

It snows, all the schools close, we're out for a day or two, the skies clear for 5 days, then the cycle repeats.

This cycle has almost repeated perfectly since the 2nd week of December - if it weren't so troublesome it would be amazing.

Here is yet another short video of my two beasts enjoying the snow.

Besides baking and cleaning, videoing the dogs is one of the few things that…

Happy Easter, everybody

Easter, schmeaster. We only do this 'cuz we get fed triple. Didn't even find any Easter eggs. Gwynnie found a WHOLE CLIFF BAR in the snow, and our "master" [what a disgusting concept] took it away from her!!!

Beats walkin' the 'hood though...

VA Snow Days

Well it looks like this week is done and I can't concentrate on work.. (sometimes working from home is a negative). It's too snowy and beautiful outside. We're right in the thick of it.. just outside of DC where they showed all the red bars.. tomorrow we'll have about 40+ inches on the ground with both storms added.

The. Dogs. Love. It. Since Sat morning we've gone out every morning and romped around.. and then they would sleep all afternoon while I tried to concentrate on work… Continue

What to do when it snows...

So our puppy is about 11 weeks old now. He is doing great for the most part, and he is really starting to enjoy and depend on his daily walks. We live in a townhouse style neighborhood, and we got a decent amount of snow over the weekend. Buddy loves the snow! We let him off the leash in our backyard, and he went crazy! We got one good walk in on Saturday morning pre-snow, but have not been able to walk him since due to the ice melt/salt all over the place. We have read that it can be very… Continue

My first blog post and some of my corgi art.

Hi everyone! I joined a while ago, but I'm just now posting a blog. I really love corgis but unfortunately my husband and I aren't ready financially to have a dog. Anyway, enough of the sad stuff. Since I don't have pictures of a real corgi to contribute, I thought I'd share a picture I drew today. It's not colored yet, and still a little rough in some parts but I really tried hard so far. I'm pretty much self taught.... It's supposed to be me and my possible future corgi playing in the snow in… Continue

One week of rest... kind of

I'm not sure if Owen made it through okay or if he will ever look at the vet sweetly again. On Monday, I drove in the snow to get Owen fixed, vaccinated (rabies), and have his front dew claws removed. All in all, I'm pretty sure this was equally tragic for all of us involved. I picked up poor Owen that afternoon, paws bandaged and drove home. He cried until he got to my lap and I cried too.. we are babies. He rested alot and that night whined and whined. Matt had to sleep in the hallway part of… Continue
