Lucy is asserting her independence and her mischief by ignoring me completely when I call her. She will look up and right at me, pause, then bound off in another direction. Treats only work once, then after that the chase is on... She will come bounding back if I begin to walk away but never close enough for me to grab her collar to releash her. She will also come if I am with a friend and she or he calls her!! She doesn't mind the leash, but she has turned releashing her into a big chase game which can be a little treacherous if we are near a street; once I have her, she patiently waits for me to hook her up and we resume our walk and the game is over. She knows how to come--she does it plenty when we are in the woods. Lucy "Mischief" Magillacuddy. She is living up to her namesake!
Yesterday, she met a new friend. Indie is a 12-year-old black lab mix, whose family just moved in downstairs. While Mom and Dad were attending to movers, Indie was lying under the shade of a big tree enjoying the breeze. When Lucy came over (always excited to meet new dogs and new people), Indie got up, and even though old and lumbering, began playing with Lucy. It was great fun watching them both interact. When Indie tired, play was finally over, and both dogs plopped down on the ground under the tree. After a few minutes Lucy moved closer to Indie and licked her face. She laid there patiently with Indie and didn't get up until Indie got up to move. I've seen Lucy interact plenty with other dogs (and she goes to doggy daycare about once a week), but this was the first time I have seen her with an older dog who has some difficulty--she was so nice, seemingly knowing how much Indie could take and just happy to "hang out." It was all very sweet.
