Tonight my husband's 13 year old sister tried taking Koby for a run. She trotted down his street, the street we walk Koby on when we visit (it always seemed safe) Well tonight for some reason a guy came home, did not even look and let his 2 pittbulls out of the car near where she was! The pittbulls made a bee-line right for them! Poor anna didn't know what to do except run! Thank god the owner came and threw himself over Koby so the pittbulls could not get him. Then he grabbed them and took them inside. His wife ran out to check on Anna and Koby and they were ok. She offered to pay medical bills if there are any...you better believe she will!! I checked Koby all over and there are no sores, cuts ect. HE seems fine. Thank god! Anna is fine too. Can anyone tell me why people don't put horrible dogs like that on a leash?? Why do they have them in a neighborhood>?
Poor Koby was shook en up and trembling. I hope this does not make him hate other dogs. Keep him in your prayers.

I could not believe my ears when I heard this!

I also blame the owner of any out of control aggressive dog. My ex's PitX was attacked by aggressive non-pit dogs, and he didn't harm them at all. Both my dogs have been attacked by everything BUT pit bulls. From crazy chihuahuas to labradors. Any dog can be aggressive without proper training.

personally i don't dislike the pitbull breed. i'm one of those ppl that feel there are no bad dogs, just bad/irresponsible dog owners. any dog off-leash should be considered dangerous. you'd be surprised how many little dogs try to fight with ein and he's twice their size. lol. chihuahuas are vicious. lol.

Beth,
Check your facts. SOME LINES, yes, have been bred to be aggressive. This is not, however a characteristic of a well-bred pit. Same could be said about any breed, though. Like I already said, in a daycare/ socialization Golden retrievers have been the biggest culprits of no-warning dog aggression.
I must lack common sense, according to you, because I absolutely do not stand on guard any more than typical over a pil bull being in the area. It is those kinds of nerves and anxiety that will cause an attack.
With that being said I will not disreguard the fact that often times certain "types" of people are drawn to pit bull ownership. I'd think it's safe to say that most of these men that get pits do it primarily off of image alone. An aggressive dog is th result of poor breeding, poor treatment and poor training. NOT the breed itself.

I feel the need to quote mine and Radar's trainer. "Don't blame them, train them!" I am so sorry for the incident
that transpired and very thankful that no one was hurt physically. People that own any large, aggressive dogs need to get training and use common sense especially when there are other neighbors involved. It is just
plain irresponsible to turn a dog off there leash when not in some type of controlled situation. I received a lot
of flack from friends because we live in a rural setting and I do not let Radar run loose. I am proactive when it
comes to the safety of my dog and others. Years ago when it was customary to let dogs and kids run loose our Collie got ran over by a delivery truck. I never want to feel that helpless again! If people want to let a dog run free either fence in there yard, use electronic fencing, train them properly and be responsible. Also, a dog can be aggressive no matter what breed.

I'm so sorry to hear of your scary experience!

While it is true that not all pit bulls are aggressive, it is true that pit bulls have been selectively bred for many generations to see other dogs as prey. Sure any breed can be aggressive, but since pits are specifically bred to be dog-aggressive and to not give up in a fight (they don't always accept another dog's surrender), it is only common sense to be protective of your dog if there is a loose pit in the vicinity.

The pit bull rescues strongly recommend not allowing your pit loose when there are strange dogs around, no matter how "dog-friendly" it has seemed in the past. Terriers are selected to be "game" and the same instinct that means your pet bunny is probably not a good friend for your Rat Terrier mean that a pit bull may wag its tail at you and yet see another dog as lunch. My aunt has had Jack Russels and all of them have been excellent varmint-killers. A good-quality well-socialized well-adjusted pit can easily see a running dog as a "varmint" to be dispatched.

That's not prejudice, any more than it's prejudice to say a Corgi is likely to want to herd moving creatures.

I'm sorry to hear about what happened. That's happened to me several times, and it is TERRIFYING (once ending with a $200 vet bill that I had to pay). Unfortunately, all of my worst experiences have been with Pit Bulls as well. I understand that the dogs *themselves* are not to blame and that it is the responsibility of the owners. However, it seems (at least in my area) that the highest percentage of irresponsible owners happen to own pit bulls. It is a college town and students get them, think they're "automatic" guard dogs, don't train them, and often let them loose. And it is A LOT scarier to have a pit bull charging at you than a chihuahua or a shi-tzu! Even though it was a horrifying experience, it is fortunate that everyone is physically OK. And, although rationally and logically I know that not all pit bulls are untrained and aggressive, because of my experiences I have a strong emotional reponse when I see one too.

Pit bulls can be excellent dogs - just like any other breed - irresponsible owners can lead to poorly behaved dogs. It really isn't fair - the stigma these dogs carry is because of irresponsible owners- who think getting a pit bull will make them seem tough but then have no idea how to train the dog. Petie from the Little Rascals was a pit bull and they used to be called nanny dogs because they were so good with children. They aren't all bad!!

I completely understand you being angry at these dog owners and the situation. I don't know why anyone would have dogs that are aggressive off the leash. I am sure it was scary for your husband's sister and for Koby but hopefully they will be able to move past it without any fears!

Im so sorry to hear of your experience tonight. I hope those owners will be more responsible and keep them on leashes before they have to deal with lots of bills. Maybe this incident will be a wake up call to them, we could only hope! Im glad to hear that Koby is okay. Keep socializing him around friendly and well behaved dogs, I bet he will be okay.
