Toby was licking and biting himself so bad that he was ripping out his fur! Went to the vet, and she put him on a antihistamine and recommended I switch to a lamb and rice food. I've also been chucking in a fish oil capsule with his breakfast. Anywho, one of those things worked like a charm and he's no longer gnawing at himself. Phew!

Omg Eddy is crazy allergic right now too! His eyes are red and puffy and he's itching himself more often than regular. He has no loss of energy or appetite though - those ever so present traits. I really think it's because of the moisture - it's been raining and there's probably mold in the air and/or on the grass.

Yes, you can use Benadryl. Like someone else said 25mg per 25lb of weight 2-3 times a day. I also have an Aussie (like Cindy P) who had horrible skin allergies and the Benadryl did seem to help, but he hated it and I hated fighting him several times a day. I was also concerned about the long term health affects of using benadryl every single day. My vet's other option was to put him on a daily steroid which was NOT an option for me. There are definite long term health consequences to using steroids over the lifetime. I made sure my guys were on a really good no-allergen food (I had Flint River Ranch Lamb and Millet recommended to me by an Aussie breeder) and started them on Nzymes antioxidants and Pro-Bac (a probiotic supplement) as well as the Ox-E Drops as a topical antifungal to kill any germs causing itching on skin (all these products are on Nzymes.com). My Aussie is completely off of Benadryl now and not itching thanks to this protocol. The Nu-Vet Vitamins are also great, so I've been told by the same breeder, but I haven't tried them. Let us know how we can help, there are lots of allergy sufferers on here! Toby had terrible breakouts on his skin and chewing himself up constantly - just miserable! We tried everything, Benedryl did nothing, changed food, shampoo, bedding, had allergy testing and allergy shots. That was a waste of money! Finally, my vet's partner saw Toby and suggested we try Atopica tablets. Started once a day, skin cleared up in a week, and then backed off to everyother day. Apparently this stuff is used for people who had kidney transplants, an anti-rejection drug. I asked the vet why they never suggested it before and she said because it was very expensive and most people don't want to spend that kind of money. Well, when you are taking a dog to the vet 2 or 3 time a month because nothing is working - THAT gets expensive!!! So far we have had good luck with it and now I only give it to him if he has a breakout. Good luck!
Tank has bad seasonal allergies. He gets grain-free food. We give him 1mg Benedryl/lb. It does help. We also picked up some Sulfodene at PetSmart. It gives some immediate itchy control. You might also try Tea Tree oil or Peppermint oil to relieve itching and soothe the skin. We've added 2 big fish oil caps in each feeding and that has given help too. Good luck!

Lance was biting his back paw raw, check out my blog as well, you may find something that helps Winston. The apple cider vinger and water really helped Lance. I used that and some benadryl and between the two he is doing great now!!
What do you feed him? If he has allergies it is better for him to eat grain free food.
Also check out nzymes website. They have some helpful info on dog alergies and yeast infections. Sometimes those two are confused.
Steroid shots bring temporary relief but are very bad in the long run. You'll have to increase dose all the time.
Hope Winston feels better!

Sparty was diagnosed with severe seasonal allergies about 6 or 7 years ago. We after trying a few routes took him to the MSU vet hospital for an allergy test. They shaved his side and did a skin prick tests. He tested very allergic to many things (dust, fleas, grass etc). They gave us an injection protocol which ended up being quite successful. He is now 10 and a half and we give him a monthly injection of the serum and he does very well. About once or twice a year he still has to go on…

This is not the route everyone needs to take, it really depends on how bad the allergies are.We worked closely with our vet through the whole experience. Good luck with Winston. My Aussie has terrible allergies also. My vet reccommends 25 mg tablet per 25 lbs body weight. It seems like alot but a dogs metabolism is much faster than a humans. I started giving my Aussie a product called NU-VET. Its a tablet I give him once a day. So far this fall he is allergy free. Good luck!!
