He has a subcutaneous lipoma low on his side.  For those who don't know what they are, they are a fatty growth that is common to older dogs.  These are not cancer.  Normally they stay small and don't need to be removed...I think just about all my older dogs have had them.  The one Max has is low on his side and it grew quickly and large, about the size of a softball. The vet said she can close her fingers almost completely on the inside of the growth which means it's not attached to anything...it's right under the skin which is a real good thing.  He has a couple of other small ones that she is not concerned about except for one that is almost into his armpit.  It may not grow any bigger but if it does it will impede his leg movement so in order to prevent a 2nd surgery she is removing it.

If you all would keep good thoughts for my boy I would greatly appreciate it.  I am calmer about it now that he has had his evaluation and the vet is very encouraging that it will be a simple operation.  They will do blood work of course before they do the surgery.  Max is 12 and in good overall health but I still worry....of all the dogs I have had in my lifetime some how this short, fluffy, crazy, annoying, loving creature had just gotten such a hold on my heart.

Max is doing just fine....he's his normal self.  Stitches come out tomorrow after 2 weeks.  He is being so good....he hasn't had the E-collar on in 3 days...he hasn't once attempted to bother the stitches.  He healed beautifully.

Glad to hear Max's surgery went well. Hoping for good news on the test results.

@Milo....thank you for your good thoughts.

I thought they had removed the small cyst thru the large incision because I really couldn't see any shaved area down under his chest.  Last night I had the ecollar off for a bit while we were watching TV and I could keep an eye on him.  I was giving his neck and chest a good scratching and as I put my hands further down under his chest I felt stitches.  Very small shaved area and that incision is only an inch compared to the big one.

He's doing really well.  There's no redness or swelling at all and he isn't fussing with the ecollar.  We decided to take it off so he can come upstairs at night with me and then put it back on when he gets up here.  That's working fine and keeping a more normal routine is better.

That half a Rimadyl this morning really whacked Max out but he's better now. He's woofing...he's a very vocal corgi and I can always tell how he is feeling by whether he barks or not. This is the fist time since he came home yesterday that he has uttered a sound. I realized that the plastic tubes are not drains, they are individual spacers along either side of the incision to keep the skin from shrinking and pulling as it heals. The incision has to be a good 7 inches long. They took the small cyst out thru that same incision instead of making another cut.

@Beth...I had to trim the cone down for Arnie and take off for him to eat but had to watch him like a hawk.  He would be at the stitches in a heartbeat.

@Lois...thank you!  We think he's a pretty good looking guy too!  Our groomer does a great job with keeping him looking like a fluffy but still keeping his coat neat and the belly fur out of the mud and wet.

Linda,  I hope your precious handsome Max has a good recovery and that you get good lab results.  He is one of the best looking fluffs that I have ever seen pictures of.  Good luck.

Aw, poor guy!  I hear you on the big plastic cones.  Jack had one for an eye injury and he kept bumping it on the floor.  Someone at work suggested punching a hole in the top and tying a cord through it to hold it up when we went on walks. That, combined with taking an inch or two off the front, helped.  But the soft cone is so much better.  Not good for an eye injury, though, since they can still face-rub in the soft cone.

But that's off-topic.   Glad to hear he's doing well.  And I agree, nothing stops that Corgi appetite!  When mine had the nasty intestinal thing the vet asked if they were eating and I laughed and said they were, but that was indicative of nothing and did NOT mean they were feeling ok!

Chris....Max is 12 but he doesn't look it.  You should see him with his full fluffy coat...gorgeous boy.  I went out to hang laundry and when I came in he had the Ecollar off but not his collar.  They didn't put his collar thru the inside loops of the Ecollar.  I can't see where he tried to get at the incision tho.  I found with a previous corgi that those plastic cones just don't work for short legged dogs.  Every little change in floor material and it looked like Arnie was going flip himself over not to mention the bruises I had on the back of my legs.
