My Corgi is about 7 months old. The breeder had her on a dog food that was literally impossible to find locally (I called to every feed store and specialty grocery store nearby with zero luck). So we switched her to Blue Wilderness.

Her poos on Blue Wilderness were always a little too runny (especially in the afternoon), and after doing some reading on it, I determined that it was likely because the protein content was too high. We held a puppy "taste test" of several dog foods that had a lower percentage of protein, and Nature's Recipe (Puppy Lamb Mean & Rice) won out (25% protein).

Her poos in general have improved, but here's the weird thing: her first poo of every day is perfect. The ones in the afternoon are pretty much always runny. I'm not feeding her any treats or anything other than her food. The thing I've noticed is that they're especially runny when we're at the dog park or going for a walk -- is it a stress/excitement thing, perhaps? Sometimes she'll poop twice at the dog park, and the first one will be fine, but the second one is diarrhea.

I've checked and doublechecked with the vet -- she has no parasites or other health issues. Their only advice is to perhaps change her food again. We currently feed her 3 times a day.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Should we change her feeding schedule to twice daily now? Switch to a different food? Something else? Appreciate any help or opinions.

You could try adding more fiber to her diet...vegetables are good.  Canned pumpkin is often recommended.

Canned pumpkin can be conveniently frozen in ice cube trays for individual portions. It keeps longer that way too.

We've had success supplementing one pumpkin cube per day.

At 7 months she can easily go to a twice a day schedule. Not sure about your food brand. I feed mine a raw diet and she has done really well on it. I also supplement with veggies and fruit for fiber and filler. I also will give her a pumpkin ice cube a few times a week, and a dollop of yogurt for the probiotics. I think the most important thing is to feed a good quality all life stage food, not puppy food. Maybe that will help.

Wally's 2 years old this still continues to this day.   We've been adding a bit of cooked white rice to his food and white bread bits to his food for the starch content to help with the consistency.   I'm not a vet and I have not searched on it but from my own experience exercise does help a bit to absorb the water from the stool to make it harder.    If I force him on a walk where he'll poop it might be too soon as it's smaller and more loose.    But sometimes if we wait and pass the pooping in the evening, the morning poop is back to normal.

But obviously, a number of other things could be influencing this as you mentionned.   How did it go during the taste test?

I would figure it would have been worse from changing food too quick and upsetting the stomach, unless stretched over several weeks.

We call it the "excitement poo". I don't really think there's much you can do to fix it honestly.

At her age she could probably go onto an ALS or adult food though which may help.

Just wanted to give an update on this in case anybody doing a search on this comes across this thread -- we recently switched her to Blue Buffalo Basics, which is grain free and states that has a "limited number of ingredients." Since making the change, no more runny poos, at all. Not even in the afternoon or when we go to the dog park. So if you're running into this issue, it seems like it's worth a shot to try a different food.
