I really need some advice here...Is it possible for a dog to just NOT like a human? I have done everything for this dog and he still shows me NO love, NO respect....I really don't know what to do with him.  I have had TONS of dogs all my life and have never met one so distant.  I am really thinking about getting rid of him even after the THOUSANDS I have already spend on him, his vet bills and all he could ever ask for as far as toys, food, care etc.  I really don't feel comfortable giving up a dog but I am at a loss at this point, I have literally been crying all day over this.  I just need some feed back on what I should do at this point.  I feel so helpless.

Billy went in for his re-check...good news is the bronchitus and pneumonia is cured So he is feeling GREAT!! However, his mange is still alive and doc wont vaccinate untill he has TWO negative skin scrapings and that wont happen for at LEAST 4 more weeks :(  So he is STILL not allowed to go on walks, or parks or have any fun.  It's breaking my heart, all he wants to do is meet all the puppies that walk by but he isn't allowed to.

"If it is important to you that your dog be obedient and deferential most of the time, don’t get a Corgi."

This statement just makes me sad :( It is very important for my dog to be obedient.  Guess I should have read this BEFORE getting one.

That is good that you are brining him to your office then so he can meet the other two pups and he can meet all other people.  He sounds like he is getting a lot of good socialization already and it shouldn't be a problem.  By barking at the skateboarder he was probably confused by it or his herding instincts could have been kicking in and he thought that it was a strange animal needing to be herded. :)  He sounds like a great little puppy even for being so sick.

Percy was about ten months before he went to Puppy classes because there was such a waiting list - he is perfectly sociable now. Sounds like you are doing a grand job. You can get him used to noises like hair driers and hoovers around the house and invite folks over to meet him until you can get him out. Percy had a wee bark at a disability scooter ( thankfully an empty one) parked outside the supermarket this morning just because he had never seen one before. You can't prepare them for everything!

Please do not think a crate is punishment, it keeps them safe, and disciplined.  Dogs look at crates as their cave. Once Billy gets better you can go puppy school.  Having a puppy is very close to having a newborn, a lot of work and not much reward but it does get better.

It sounds like he's getting quite a bit of good quality socialization! It's normal at his age to bark at things like people on skateboards, bicycles, and motorcycles. Sidney used to even bark at a trash can that had been knocked over. He seemed very perturbed about anything that he saw as odd. He eventually got over it, thank goodness. I think Billy  thought the skateboard was weird and he was barking at it to protect you!

And yes, we were so happy to rescue Bruce. He's 16 now and going strong! Well, ok he does not hear so well anymore, but other than that he's awesome. He likes to sit at my husband's feet but he smiles at me from across the room :)

Well THAT is such a relief.. TEN years old WOW!  That is awesome, I cant wait to have my own house one day so that I can rescue a dog or two in need.  He LOVES all people he meets.  He is always meeting people at the office...mail lady, UPS, FedEx.  He has never shown aggression to humans or other dogs. He did however bark at a kid on a skateboard tonight, that was a first.  There are two young puppies at my office in the back that he gets to play with, he LOVES going to see my parents dogs, he has not shown fear nor aggression towards either dog nor human so that is a great sign.

Brooke, please don't stress about that! I have not heard that statistic. We adopted Bruce when he was TEN YEARS old. He hadn't been socialized nor trained. We took him to PetSmart training and he's great now. You can teach an old dog new tricks...and Billy will still be so young when you can take him to training.

A lot of readings explain that it is ABSOLUTELY crucial but you can also keep in my that you have already been giving him a lot of love and attention.  Also with your boyfriend coming over can be helpful in his learning.  I don't know how your work situation is but if you have other people in the office you could let them see him and maybe pet him a little when he is in an ok mood just so he can get used to attention, be petted, and having strangers that want to get to know him because it will happen.  One more thing, remember they also say, "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" but I have seen plenty of dogs with some behavioral issues get whipped into shape (just not literally of course).

I think a big part of the frustration is because I keep reading how CRUCIAL it is to get him trained/socialized before 16 weeks old.  With his sickness that is NOT going to be possible.  I can't even take him for walks (not that he would even walk with me)  I can't take him to school, parks etc.  I'm afraid that this sickness is going to ruin his/our future.
