Registering a Pet-Quality Pup with the AKC: WHY????

Sooo... the American Kennel Club has been importuning me to purchase any number of services and products for  Ruby-Doo the Corgi Pup, even though sometime in the next five or six months she will be spayed, and even though the rankest amateur can see at a glance that she is not, repeat NOT, a show-quality corgi. And that is even though pup's registration papers distinctly state "OFFSPRING OF THIS DOG NOT ELIGIBLE FOR REGISTRATION."

In addition to whatever fee the breeder paid for registering the litter with AKC (and passed along to me, probably in spades), we are told that we can buy (woop-de-doo!) a pedigree: dating back three generations, 25 dollah; dating back four, 32 dollah. We can allow ourself to be roped into a 60-day trial of a doggy veterinary insurance plan (something a friend of ours found to be virtually useless, when he needed help with vet bills and after he had paid premiums for some years). We are invited to subscribe to a Pembroke Welsh Corgi newsletter for a mere $48 to $61/year, depending on how urgently we wish to have the thing delivered to our precincts. And for a mere $14 we can buy a book, The New Illustrated Study of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Standard, such a bargain.

Well, if the alleged freebie alleged health insurance plan comes with whatever registering the breeder did, bueno. I'll look into that, and I'll believe it when I see it.

But otherwise: one is left wondering: WHY?

This is a dog that is never going to have puppies. Is never going to show up on any show circuit, anywhere. It's a dog that's smart and funny and fearless and friendly and companionable, which is all one could possible desire from a pet-quality dog, whether from a high-falutin' breeder or a pen at the Humane Society.

Why on earth would I want to pay someone to tell me that this is a very nice little dog?

Congratulations Geri and Sidney!

I got Sidney a PAL (Pedigreed alternative listing) so he can compete in Rally-o (he now has a novice title). He's also done enough therapy work to have therapy dog title too. I am very proud of my little SId.

I would agree with the other commentors. My old shepherd, Skipper, was the opposite of "show quality," but we registered him because the breeder insisted (they were friends of my parents, and gave Skip to us outright when it was obvious he would be a pet). It was in the early 90's and there weren't so many "perks," but it was neat to have his official registry with his AKC name (Anchors on the Shoals).

I registered River as limited registration when I got her in November. I had fun picking out her name (Kaled's Hello Sweetie), and want to pursue other sports with her as well as CGC and the like. I didn't opt for any of the extras from AKC - I don't need her pedigree, I got her chipped through the vet when she was spayed, I don't do vet insurance, etc. But it's nice to have yet another entity to turn to for advice or information.

I also registered my Adult shepherd/golden mix under their "Canine Partners" mixed breed program so that I could get her official CGC title listed.

If you ever get into agility or obedience or the like, you'll need a registration number. :) There are ones for mixed or dogs of unknown ancestry too, though...

I like having the pedigree and I also like making up a fun fancy name. Plus if I ever want to compete in rally they are already registered.

I have two AKC dogs - Ellie (Corgi) and Yuki (American Eskimo Dog).  I didn't bother registering Yuki because, like you, I really didn't see the point of it.  Plus he was my first dog (owned as an adult, anyway) and I was too busy worrying about whether or not I would be a good owner.  I did register Ellie because I figured it was worth it to try it at least once.  Has it made a difference at all?  Eh, not really.  I do like that I have the option of earning titles with her, should I ever decide to compete in agility and such, but I doubt I ever will.  Still, it's not something that I regret doing.  I kinda liked coming up with her AKC name.  :-)

Here is one more reason to register the pup, in addition to all the good reasons already given.  It took responsible breeders years and years to get AKC to allow a "limited registration" option, as well as for the public to accept it.  This not only ensures that a pet quality dog cannot be bred and have the offspring registered, but also that it will not end up in the puppy mill track, offering the breeder some protection.  In addition it also offers some flexibility, as it can be lifted by the breeder at a later date.  It puts some muscle into sales contracts.  Before the limited registration option, breeders used to sell pet puppies with a non breeding agreement only to find out they were basically useless because  unenforceable in Court, or by AKC.  The only protection possible was through co-ownership, which is why I co-owned every puppy I ever sold.... Of course nothing is foolproof, but it has worked very well.  The fact that AKC allows dogs with limited registration to participate in all their events except conformation, was also part of the hard won features.  AKC has lofty stated goals, but in reality IMO is driven primarily by $$$$.  Let's support the parts that help improve the dog world and leave the rest.  This is a winner in my eyes.

Max's litter was registered by the breeder but Max was pet quality and could not be bred since he is a fluffy.  His original owner registered him with his name.  When we got Max we also got his papers and I changed the ownership name with the AKC.  I like that I have his full pedigree, I was able to look up his parents.  Max looks almost identical to his sire except he is a fluffy and now I know where he got his big bones from. In fact I was on pinterest today and what pops up is a picture of Max's sire!  They just had it labled "sable corgi" but it's the picture I have of him.  I was able to post who the dog was, his kennel name, his call name and the fact that he was from South Africa and that he crossed the bridge in 2012 at the age of 17 years.  I liked having all that info.  Max has his CGC but dogs do not have to purebred to earn that.

Katie is a retired show dog so she was registered and named by the breeder...she stayed with her breeder.  I have all her papers and once she was spayed then I could have her changed over completely to my name.  If she wasn't spayed I would have to share ownership with the breeder.

Both dogs are chipped thru Home Again and their ID's are registered with the AKC also.

I am in the same camp as the previous posters. All 3 of my corgis were purchased on limited registration (no breeding) but they are registered with AKC since we do enjoy performance sports. Ashton our oldest has titles in Rally, Obedience, Agility, Herding, Coursing and his CGC. The younger two will follow him in whatever activities they enjoy. Registration is more than just for Conformation.

I registered Ein even though the breeder only gave us a limited registry. I like having her papers in case something should ever happen. It's a proof that the dog is mine (kind of like a deed to the house). Plus I can do AKC sporting events and earn titles through those. Heck! Ein already has a title from passing her CGC! They also run some pretty great programs for companion animals. I think registering is well worth it even though you will never do conformation or breed. Thats not all the AKC represents.
