Happy New Year! And a hilarious Corgi New Year to you.

Hereabouts we're ringin' in the New Year with a big, soggy rainstorm. Cassie the Corgi, as we know, loathes and detests water, especially if it's inclined to get on her. Until this morning, it looked like Ruby the Corgi Pup was going to be the same way, presumably having learned her hydrophobia from her sort-of role model.

But no.

Ruby has learned to use the doggy door. Cassie still declines, thank you very much, but Ruby thinks it's the best invention known to caninekind. This morning the Breakfast Frolic consisted of charging out the dog door through the pouring rain (it was really coming down for awhile), racing around the yard, and zipping onto the eastside patio, there to bang against the sliding door by way of demanding entry.

For a while, when it wasn't raining so hard, Cassie went out to chase Ruby back and forth. But then thought better of it. She does hate to get wet.

Cassie, however, does want the back door to hang open to the elements. Doesn't matter what elements: 115-degree heat? Open the door, Human. Leave door open. Or 32-degree chill? Open, open!! What does it take to make this creature grasp the concept of "open"?

LOL! She doesn't have to pay the power bills.

Heh. Nor does she have to pay for the dog food.

Today I'm busily stocking up, cooking-and-freezing, packing, and listing by way of preparing for the upcoming double-deboobification surgery, slated for the 6th. Lately -- mostly out of stress and not wanting to deal with anything more than I absolutely have to -- I've quit cooking the custom chow and been feeding the FreshPet food that comes in rolls. It's as close to what I make as any commercial food I've found, and it's made in the USA. So they claim. Just figured out I'll need to buy six rolls of the stuff to tide the two dogs over 15 days. I've already got about 7 days' worth on hand, so this will last until the 22nd.

Friends have volunteered to come in and feed the pooches, but obviously something will have to be available to feed. I'll slice the rolls into meal-size pieces, so that all a helper will have to do is pull it out of the fridge and put it on their little dog dishes.

But six rolls of the stuff is gonna set me back about $80. And of course it will only carry me two weeks past the surgery: until the 22nd. WonderSurgeon claims I should be just fine in ten days or two weeks (yeah, right...). Could be I need to buy two more rolls, which will provide enough for almost three weeks.

As soon as I can stand on my feet and lift a pan and tote a big bowl and smush stuff together with a big spoon, it'll be back to home-made. And presumably it'll be the next lifetime before I can ever again afford fancy commercial food for these two.

{sigh} What a dark, dark day.

pet studio dog steps

I bought these steps for Griffin to get up and down from the bed by himself.  Very stable.  There's also a two step version.

@ Chris: My Mastectomy Buddy and hubby trotted off to Applebee's yesterday, when she was sprung from the hospital. WonderSurgeon has announced the same awaits me: she thinks (barring complications) all will proceed smoothly. heh... I'm counting on WS to be right as usual!

The food processor is pretty heavy to haul around -- it's stored in a back room and has to be lifted into the kitchen. The rolls can be sliced into one-serving disks, which I can then store for friends to dish out to the pooches. It's not work-intensive and my friends will be able to do it without hassle.

@ Susan: Thanks! Ruby is outrageously funny, very silly. With plenty of food on hand and someone to change their water (the dish is very heavy) and my son to pick up the backyard now and again, I think the pooches will be fine. Main problem is they're accustomed to sleeping on the bed, which ain't a-gonna happen for about three weeks, or until WonderSurgeon gives the OK to lift 25 pounds and there's no chance of getting an infection. It's cold just now and they will be decidedly unpleased about being told to sleep on the floor. And (heh!!) we know what an unpleased corgi is capable of.

I hope Ruby, with all her puppy antics, will help to keep your spirits up as you are recovering from your surgery. Sending corgi hugs and positive energy your way!

A friend had "DD" surgery last year(in more ways than one!!!) and she was up and around within a week, but had limitations on how much weight she could lift & how she could move her arms for awhile. Maybe instead of smashing the food with a spoon, you could put it into a food processor or blender and chop/rough puree it until you get the 100% clear signal from the doc. Best of luck with the surgery & recovery.
