We live in Florida a typically hot and humid place, lately it has been dry and cold. This is when Benjamin has started his new problem. He is itching and biting like crazy. He is itching so much that he he is causing himself to bleed. We don't have fleas, and we haven't changed his diet. We know that we have been dealing with extremely dry skin ourselves (lack of moisture in the air) and we believe that this is his problem. Is there something we can put on him to soothe his itchiness?

Did I already tell you that my sister had me switch to lamb and rice when Presley was a pup?  her vet had her do it for her dobie.  Keeps the skin more moist.  Presley is not an itchy boy.  He's eating chicken and rice right now, but I always stick to a rice mixture and usually lamb and rice and it's been 3 years of good.

BUT he got an itchy sore after being in a mudbog.....we may need to borrow Benjamin's elizabethan collar  :-(

We finally took him to the vet, we had a troublesome hot spot.Benjamin won't stop licking his hot spot and got it infected. The vet gave us hotspot spray and told us to keep the cone on his head so it will heal.

We were having the same issue - I bought a Vicks Vaporizer at Wal-Mart for 30 dollars - we all feel better.

We have been feeding them the FROMM whitefish and potatoes, which I feel is the best. It's very similar to the brand Taste of the Wild. We will try giving him some oil to his kibble and see if that works.

The humidifier isn't a bad idea either, we will see if that helps.

In addition to what Julia suggested, add a teaspoon of oil to his kibble, make sure he is well hydrated, if Ben is not a drinker, you can also add water to his food.

You could first try a humidifier. I haven't dealt with this with dogs, but I know with cats that when they have dandruff or similar skin problems a move to a higher quality food is recommended. In cats that means grain-free. I could only speculate on what dietary change would help with a dog, but I'm sure there are supplements sold for this problem.
