Having a nervous breakdown: surgery tomorrow

I posted a few weeks ago about how I was told Dakota needed surgery on a torn CCL... well the time has come.

We met with the surgeon last Wednesday.  I really liked him and he seems very confident about the procedure and how she will do.  We are doing a traditional repair on it.  The only thing that made me nervous is that I am not getting much of a physical therapy regimen from him.  In fact, the only thing he said was to keep her on leash outside at all times until December.  He even said we'd be able to start jogging again pretty quickly... it seemed like his timeline was way too fast, at least for a worry wart like myself.

Dakota has to be at the vet around 7:00 am.  I am not sure what time her actual surgery is, but I know that I am going to be a nervous wreck until the surgeon calls me after he is done to tell me how it went.  In all honesty, I'll probably be a nervous wreck until she is back in my arms the next night (She has to stay over night and most of the next day), and then I'll probably cry.

I can't even stand it... I am so nervous and I don't know how to handle it!

We're glad that things went well and are hoping for a quick recovery! Give her a hug from us.

The vet called around two today saying that Dakota was waking up and that her surgery went really well.  I should be able to pick her up tomorrow afternoon.  I wish I could bring her home now... but I'm glad to hear that the surgery part is done.  Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

Good luck tomorrow! We'll be thinking of you and Dakota bright and early. Keep us posted and let us know how she's doing.

When Seanna tore her ACL, the surgeon didn't even discuss the PT regimen until the day we went to pick her up (the day after surgery).  Then he went over everything with a fine tooth comb, showed us how to do the exercises, and even had everything written down.  Maybe they're just waiting until after...if your gut says that he'll do a fine job, then I'm sure he will.  I had to look for a physical therapist vet on my own, and she gave me way more intensive exercises plus hydrotherapy--the surgeon just agreed it'd be a good idea.  I'm not sure why they never mentioned the exercises before the surgery, but they too only said to restrict movement on a leash until after.  Let us know how it goes, I'm sure Dakota will do great!

Jenn,

I'm sorry that you and Dakota have to go through the trauma of surgery, I can empathize.  I even cried a bit when Johann got neutered; it's scary anytime the pets we love have to go under for surgery.  Even though Dakota has to go through surgery and recovery, it is the best thing that you can do for him and his health.

I am glad that you feel confident about your vet- remember that he cares about your Dakota as much as you do and is going to do his best to frepair his CCL.  If you are still upset tomorrow, you could maybe call the vet before they close and ask how Dakota did during surgery.  Vets are very understanding about that and I'm sure they will be more than happy to let you know how he is.

Good luck to both of you tomorrow- we will keep Dakota in our thoughts.  Have faith in your vet and everything will go smoothly :)

For sure you'll cry!  But you need to have faith in your surgeon, if you don't then you need to wait.  I think the best way to know how much physical therapy Dakota will need, is Dakota herself.  I'm sure if you think she needs more p.t. then let your vet or surgeon know and they will make sure she gets it.  I am so sorry for both of you going through this, but as I am sure you know, she will be so much more like her normal self afterward!  So be strong for Dakota, and hug her really tight, and before you know it she will be back in your arms!!!
