We had a new experience last night.  One of our new guys panicked during a thunderstorm.  He clawed at the porch door to get in.  Once he was in, he was ok because the storm wasn't over us.  In the middle of the night, he broke down the gate (we had put both boys in the bathroom with a gate) and panicked until we put him in the bedroom with us.

Any suggestions about how to get him to calm down during a thunderstorm?  I hate to see him so distressed.

Both of my corgis get stressed with thunderstorms--fortunately we do not have them very often here in Las Vegas. For my youngest corgi, I have a thundershirt for her which I bought for another reason (anxiety with traveling in the car). When we had the thunderstorm I put it on her and also gave her some melatonin. In about 15 min. she had calmed down. I don't know if it was the thundershirt or the melatonin that helped, but I will use both again if we have anymore thunderstorms.

I just bought a thunder shirt and we only had one very mild storm so I don't know if it worked yet.

My rescue Wiley is scared of them and doesn't want to go out. I try to keep her in a place away from windows or with the shades shut and the radio on. She shakes and shivers so if at night she sits by my bed and I hang my hand over it. If outside I would bring him in right away as I lost a rescue for 3 days....I had put her in the garage as a storm was coming and didn't have the garage door shut far enough:( We got her back but it is a thing I will remember forever as she was exhausted and laying in a field about 2 miles from our home!

Today I saw this on my computer but haven't read iot yet: Whole Dog News- Thunder Phobia (music), you might want to read it?

Good luck!

I have heard good things about the thundershirt working for dogs that are scared of thunderstorms or have other anxieties.

The other thing to remember is to not baby them, as they feed off of your emotions as well.  When ours get worked up I tell them they are ok, and reassure them that they are ok.  Lance gets pretty worked up, comes running at us, like something is wrong fix it, please.  He actually has seemed to get better about it as the years have gone by, he is 5 1/2.  I really would like to try the thundershirt on him.  Hope this advice helps.  It isn't any fun to see them so distressed.
