I think it's completely normal, but I have to admit that it took me by surprise the first time I heard Casey having a vivid dream.  It happens a few times a month either during naps or at night, but he'll start to whine and yip. Depending on his sleeping position, his paws and ears will twitch too and it's absolutely adorable!  I imagine he's either dreaming about finally catching a bee, or running in a field of liver treats with his neighborhood buddies.

It is not breed specific.  We had a doxie that did the same thing.

My take?  Same as humans.   We have intense REM sleep sometimes and active dreams that can be so intense that it wakes us up.   Wally has had the occasional whimper and low bark when he sleeps on his belly.   On his side, you'll occasionally see his front legs and one back leg kicking a bit.

I have been wondering if this was breed specific or if I had a freak dog. More than once I was convinced I heard voices outside my window in the middle of the night but it turned out to be Sully talking in her sleep. She also talks (much more quietly) when she is awake if she is happy or annoyed about something. I live "in the sticks" so the voices outside are unnerving. I doesn't sound anything like a dog noise so it throws me often. She also crawls under her blanket to sleep Funny but crazy!

Max is the active dreamer with my 2.  The feet will go, the lip curls up and the sound effects start.  When I was a kid we had a mutt that would sleep on his back in the chair.  All 4 feet were going like a bat out of hell and he would whimper something bad.  Way back then it wasn't common to alter your dogs so Duke was intact.  It was also common to just open the door and let the dog out to go where it would.  Duke had a reputation for finding females all over town, scaling 6 foot chain link fences to ensure that there were little Dukes and Dutchesses to carry on his dubious bloodline.  Mom and I always figured he was dreaming about all those fun times.

Noodles apparently has some exciting dreams as well. He's woken us up out of our sleep because he will either bark or howl. I can recall only 2 times where I busted out laughing because his ears were twitching, eyes were moving, snout was wiggling and all 4 paws were shaking as well. I have not a clue what he was dreaming about, but apparently it was rather exciting. I personally think it is adorable.
