I would love some advice from some pet owners in the city.

I live in a really nice clean neighborhood of Los Angeles (Los Feliz for those familiar) but I don't want to take any chances with Parvo. I believe (feel free to correct me) that there is about 2 weeks time where you can bring them home yet they haven't gotten the parvo shots necessary to let them be safe on the ground.

I don't want to ever train my dog it's ok to go to the bathroom inside - I don't want to do puppy pads.

Other ideas I have -

Stay at my moms for 2 weeks - she has a backyard - but I am eager to get home and start training in the forever environment.

Get some sort of puppy grass to put in a back area of my apartment building that no one goes to and I doubt anyone would notice or care if there was some grass there for two weeks.

Just seeing if any city dogs have some advice for my planning or yay or nay to my ideas! Thanks!

Update on my friend who lost her new pup to parvo.  The breeder went thru talks with her vet and makers of the vaccines that the pups received the day my friend brought her pup home.  They indicated that if it was a bad batch than all the pups would have been affected.  My friend did some research and found that it is possible for one pup out of a litter to contract parvo.  The breeder is still claiming that the pup was possibly exposed at my friend's home.  That is not possible given the incubation period....the pup was brought home on Thursday evening and was sick by Friday morning.

I thought the pup was 8 weeks, she was only 6.  The breeder has offered my friend the last female left but not until she is 12 weeks and has had all her shots.  My friend, understandably, does not want the pup.  She wants her money back and will accept the breeder keeping the deposit.  She said she will take it to small claims court if necessary.

She has also bleached everything in and outside of the house including shoes, has thrown away small rugs and done everything that she can think of to rid her house including both their cars of the virus.  She wants to find another pup and does not want to risk an infection for her new pup or to carry it to any other dogs.

Wow, what a story.

So the breeder sent the pup home at 6 weeks? That's a little much... Eight weeks is the norm. Generous of your friend to offer to forgo the deposit.  She should get all her money back. Betcha a small claims judge will agree, especially if your friend's vet or a reputable breeder can be persuaded to show up and testify.

Oh my Linda...no contract? 6 weeks...poor woman...did she have a vet check paper? I would go for getting the full deposit and vet bills paid. I would also find a breeder whokeeps the pups till at least 10 weeks...

Vicky....my friend's vet faxed all her tests and findings to the breeder's vet and it seemed that the breeder's vet was trying to claim the parvo diagnosis was in error, that's why the conference with the vaccine maker.  But apparently they finally conceded that it was parvo, that's why my friend did research to find out if it was possible for just one pup to get it out of a litter.

Jane...there is a contact but for whatever reason my friend neglected to bring a copy home with her when she picked up the pup.  I thought the pups were 8 weeks and was surprised when she said they were only 6...several others went home with their new families the same day.  My friend said it was the breeder who willingly released the pups to their new homes, she said she would have been happy to wait as long as the breeder wanted, all she had to do was say so.

Awful! There should be something like Yelp for pet owners, where reviews of breeders and complaints can be posted publicly. And names named! Evidently the breeder is a sleaze and so is her vet -- this kind of thing should be described somewhere, so others who want a pup at least have a chance to be forewarned.
