Thanks to all the folks who commented on Betty Boop. Yes she is a happy little girl now, but her story is far from pleasant.

We have had Betty since April of this year. She came to us as a fearful old gal (9 years old). Her first few years were years of torture. Not abuse ... TORTURE. After many cuts, broken bones and heartaches, she retaliated and bit one of her tormentors. The father took her to the vet to be put down. The vet took one look and gave the guy a choice: surrender the dog or be charged with criminal animal abuse. Betty languished in a Corgi rescue for several years. The lady who ran the rescue died leaving her foster parents with the dogs. Betty's foster couldn't afford her any longer. None of the other rescues would accept her due to her age and fear aggression. Her foster mommy put out a plea on the internet. The only alternative appeared to be euthanasia. I was looking for a senior Basset Hound and ran across Betty's little face. It took me all of 30 seconds to want her. Her foster mommy brought her to our apartment. She snooped around and checked out the cat. Then she crawled up in my lap for some serious cuddling. Now, some seven months later, she is calm, cuddly and just a general sweetie pie. She had some lameness issues at first but she is on an herbal product that has her bombing around the dog park like a puppy. Yes. She is loved like never before and she has responded magnificently. We are both retired so we spend every minute with her except for her trips to Uncle Charlies house. She goes to the doggy park EVERY morning and for a long walk every evening. Everyone who meets her loves her and she is quite the social butterfly; making the rounds of the park's humans soliciting tummy rubs. We hope to make her last years happy ones. When it does come to the time she must leave us, she will be in Daddy's arms for the beginning of her new journey to the rainbow bridge. We can't envision being without her.

Hopefully karma will see to it that those 3 brats get the shit kicked out of them...more than once.  I also suspect they will wind up in jail and pray they get a cellmate named Bubba.

Betty is truly a special animal that she survived that and kept her sweet nature and loving heart intact.  You were sent to her and she to you to help heal all those broken hearts.

Thank you to everyone for the kind comments. Please understand though ... she rescued us. Our lives had been without a dog for several months. She graciously consented to be our companion. The empty spot in our souls has been refilled by this incredible little girl. Her capacity to forgive and forget is amazing. She is truly special. I have been hesitant to really get detailed on her previous experience but...

(3) broken ribs - not all at once I hear.

(1) broken hip

(1) broken shoulder

Several cuts requiring stitches

Compliments of three kids who don't understand that animals have feelings and emotions..I suspect they will all wind up in jail at some point in their lives.

None the less, Betty has put that behind her except for what I suspect are flashbacks. She sometimes has bad dreams but I gently wake her and hold her until she settles down. It's the least I can do. She is worth every ounce of love we can give. She gives far more than we deserve. She is our love.

Oh my, Thank-you for giving Betty Boop a good home and helping her realize that all people aren't horrible...I think of my Teddy (a puppy mill rescue) and even though his life was not good he never endured what Betty Boop did. I am thankful for every day I have with Teddy and that he finally found his voice(as he barks for whatever reason now). He also is a senior but every time I look into his cloudy eyes...I see something soooo special and it melts my heart! Although his time is limited he also had a chance to find out what life can be in a loving way.

Thank you.  Your story makes me think about the little boy on the beach throwing the stranded starfish back in the water.  When he was told that it wouldn't matter because he couldn't save all of them, he replied, "it mattered to that one".  Betty Boop is clearly That One.  Give her extra tummy rubs from me and my boys.

There truly is a place in heaven for people like you.  Thank you for making her senior years so wonderful and filled with love.

We got our first corgi from a rescue.  Arnie was not abused anywhere near as bad.  We were told he was with a couple and then they had a child.  The child was not taught how to treat an animal so it was allowed to do anything it wanted to him.  I know he ran away from them several times, he was also left out in every kind of weather and this is in the northeast where it can get has hot and humid as Florida in the summer and bitterly cold in the winter.  They said they were giving him up because he bit the toddler tho they admitted they didn't see it and the child had no bite marks on him but the child was crying and the dog was nearby.

It took several years before he stopped trying to escape, I can't tell you how many times he shot out the door and I had to go after him.  He barked at any noise, would sometimes hide in his crate as if he feared being beaten and he never got over his fear of kids which took the course of aggression towards them. We had an older teen so that wasn't an issue for us but any time kids were around I had to put him in his crate because I couldn't trust him.  Other than the kid problem he finally settle down for the last 5 years of his life and was a loving, funny companion to us and to our 3 cats.

Just realized the level of abuse your poor pup endured. I was told Sully was mistreated and her behavior led me to believe it was pretty bad, but I don't think she suffered had any broken bones. Seeing how frightened she was when I first brought her home  I can only imagine what your poor, sweet, Betty Boop had to endure. Even when a dish towel that falls on my dog it often induces a loud whimpering. Your poor baby must be that much more traumatized. I am SO happy you found each other!!

God bless you.  I am serious....what you have done is so incredibly wonderful it's hard to put in to words.  What you have done for this innocent soul...well, there is a place in Heaven for you.

Awww... Thanks for being brave enough to take on this challenge. I got Sully under similar circumstances and it was over a year before every sound or movement stopped being an issue. I was just noticing last night that she didn't jump up at every sound or every time I moved. Slept through every thing. I truly believe abused animals are more appreciative of their rescuers. I can do anything to my dog now and she trusts me not to hurt her. I truly wish I were that trusting. I am SO happy for Betty-Boop! She sounds wonderful! As you noted, she has made remarkable progress in less than a year. I suspect you will be even more amazed in the coming year. As she gets more and more secure that she is indeed going to STAY with you, she will probably show more and more of all she can become. I can't tell you how many compliments I get on how smart and sweet my dog is, and I know it is due, in part to the fact that the bar was set so low in her early years. She still refuses to go anywhere with anyone but me, or one of my family members. She even hides from neighbors she loves if I am not in the room, but she is so much more confident. I did get help from an animal behavioral trainer to build confidence, but that was pretty easy. Giving her choices and rewarding confident behavior really helped. Betty-Boop will certainly continue to reward you for your efforts. I am SO happy for all of you! Well done!
