We have to be so careful with older dogs

Oscar my beloved Corgi was lying in the dim light in between the formal dining room and the formal sitting room. I didn't see him and kicked him and he yelped we have noticed the last 2 days he has not been himself. Oscar is not limping Paul in a Registered Nurse and has had some experience with animals he gave him a thorough examination and  has said nothing is broken or fractured  he thinks it is muscular or he has some bruising. I feel terrible as I didn't see him and I would never do anything to hurt him. Paul said he needs rest and not to let him go up the stairs whatsoever!. He is eating as normal and has that normal sparkle in his eyes and that smile on his face his stump goes ten to the dozen. Should I be worried?.

Hi All in response to some people's comments one thing that both Oscar and Sam suffer from is separation anxiety disorder we have noticed when Paul is at work both animals seem to mope around and go off and either sleep on their beds or in Sam's case one of our beds!. Oscar does not like it when people have an argument or raise their voices!. I noticed this when my Ex Partner Ian would be yelling at the builder or architect on the phone years ago when we were having a house built the vet said this was effecting Oscar he would go off to a quiet place he is just like his Dad he does not like confrontation or loud noises!.

Hi All thank you for all your comments Oscar's eyes were checked last visit he has what the vet referred to as where when we get older our vision is not as good and we need glasses for reading well Oscar has this problem. with the hearing issue I will check this out?. I will try and act normal around his and see how he reacts and if I still have concerns I will take him to my vet before I go away December 20th. Paul is with him while I'm away so I know he is in good hands.

I trust everybody on My Corgi has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!.

I didn't think about it when I first responded but the others may be right about the hearing.  We've realized that Max is not hearing as well...he's 12 1/2.  I know if he's sleeping he does not hear what's going on, not even when I bang the 2 metal food bowls together.  Even my daughter commented on it when she was home over Thanksgiving.

Just a guess, but I wonder if Oscar is losing his hearing and feeling a bit uneasy because things seem to sneak up on him that he previously would have heard coming. If that is the case, he may be picking up on your very reasonable concern but it may be making him even more uneasy. I don't know Oscar so I am not sure if he overreacts to things like accidental bumps and such. I know Sully always has so I try not to "feed into it" with her, but that may not be Oscar's M.O. The shelter told me that every little bump causes her to act as if she'd been shot. Funny, but annoyingly true! I struggle to be empathetic to her fears earned by past mistreatments and being irritated that she could even think I would ever hurt her intentionally - but that is my ego getting in the way and making more out of the problem. I hope Oscar is fine. I suspect he is, as you would surely know if you made really hard contact. He is likely surprised that he was hurt or if not hurt, simply bumped into, even in the presence of his Great Protector, but he will likely forget all about it if you do. Still, as Anna mentioned, he may be reacting to your looking at him as if something is wrong. It is a bit like the phenomenon that occurs when someone says, "Does this taste funny to you?" and you answer, "It will now."  It is still hard to shake the guilt over accidently scaring them though. Recently Sully screamed when I dropped a dish towel on her. A DISH TOWEL! I know she has had to dodge worse than towels so I am trying to be understanding. Oscar may have very different experiences, but losing sight and hearing (if that is part of the issue) can be very frightening for humans and probably animals as well. Sudden movements and accidents could be part of an adjustment to that, along with Oscar being more sensitive to, and more afraid of minor bumps if he has arthritis pain.

I would not worry unless there  is something OBVIOUS  going on.  From what you write, it sounds like he's fine.  If you keep looking at him like something is wrong, that may affect him too.  With my older gal ( 15  1/2  )  I notice that she sleeps more soundly and she does not hear me approaching.  I have to watch for that and also not to startle her.   Yes, you do have to be careful with the older ones, but they still have that joy of life and, as you say, sparkle in their eyes, which teaches us a lot about making the best of what you have to work with!

What is it that he isn't his normal self if he is eating and has the sparkle and smile?  If Paul didn't find any broken bones then he is probably right that it is muscular.  Maybe give him the weekend to see if he is what you consider normal and if not then maybe a vet check is in order.
