Yipe! How much IS that puppy in the window?

Wrapping up the 2014 financial debacle, my English-major math revealed that this disastrous year racked up $9,723 in unplanned and "extraordinary" expenditures. Part of that was...hang onto your hat...TWO THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND TWENTY-SIX DOLLARS for Ruby the Corgi Pup. And fifty-one cents.

Holeeee mackerel! This is not my first pup, and so yes, I do know that puppies are expensive. But is this ridiculous or not?

Part of it piled up when she got a series of urinary tract infections. The vet bills and the special food: not cheap. And I paid out $800 in January to the breeder, when I picked her up and brought her home. The purchase price was planned. The rest of it: not so much.

How much do you figure to pay out in the first year of a new puppy's life?

I would recommend puppy health insurance if you can.

I'm still debating this myself and since Wally's 2 years of age it might be complicated but it might save you in the end.

Having a dog or cat is not cheap no matter how old they are.

Max has cost me close to $2000 between teeth cleaning, having a molar pulled and his surgery last summer to have a huge fatty cyst removed and the pathology.  Katie has cost close to a $1000 with teeth cleaning and her surgery 2 weeks ago and the pathology.  That doesn't include food, treats, toys, vaccinations, grooming, boarding when we go away, annual license and the annual fee for their chips.  They are 12 and 10 respectively.  And I'm not including the 3 cats we also have.

i spend about that a year for classes and entry fees. Becca and I have been in classes since I got her, with only a month off here and there. She loves to work, and agility is her work. It's built into my budget and I occasionally pick up extra work to help cover the costs.

I have a "Becca" account for emergencies. I have $20 a paycheck put into it. It's about the same as insurance would cost, and it adds up. When I first got Becca, Sam responded to one of my posts giving advice on how much it costs. It led me to set up her account.
