Looking to Adopt a Corgi in California (or within 1 state away surrounding CA)

Hi,

I just recently discovered mycorgi.com and I really want to adopt/rescue a corgi. I live in an apartment with my wife but we're saving up to put downpayment for a home. I live in the Los Angeles area and I currently work as an assistant editor in film/tv and I work all sorts of hours (each gig demands me to do various shifts from regular day shifts, swing shift (2pm to midnight), or night shifts).

I've been in love with corgis for the past few years and I'm dead set on having a corgi. I'm looking at either rescuing/adopting a corgi or buying a puppy, but prefer to adopt/rescue. My wife and I also are interested in having kids in the near future so I'm looking for a dog that is ok with children and can be in an apartment for long hours while I'm at work. If the workplace allows me to bring dogs (I know a few places that do), i'll bring him/her along so it can get a change of pace.

If anyone knows of any corgi that needs a new home, please contact me. I'm hoping to get a corgi as a companion when i'm at home and expanding my family.

Thank you!

Welcome! It's great that you are looking into a rescue also:)

Thank you!

I am giving myself a deadline of late April (right before my bday) so I can hopefully rescue one before then, or I plan to go to a respectable breeder to get one. (but i do prefer to rescue)

You could also contact breeders if they have any adults they are rehoming. I have rehomed 2 of my females to great homes:)

I had no idea. I thought breeders don't keep adults unless they're either to be retired or they're for show and/or studs...

I'll definitely call them up to ask about this as well.

They can retire females they had bred, males for not getting what they wanted from their stud. I just talked to a breeder who was having trouble with her male not producing...doesn't hurt to check...
Also they could have an older pup they got back due to a contract. I got 2 pups back...one due to a boyfriend and one due to a child....

Ah good to know. I'm going to compile a list of breeders in CA and the surrounding states and see if a few of them might have an adult corgi!

Calling a breeder and inquiring about an adult is a good idea.  I got Max at age 5, he was returned to his breeder because the new wife didn't like him, guess he shed too much.  We loved his personality so much I contacted the breeder if she was retiring any of her dogs.  She was, we got Katie at age 4...and Katie didn't cost us a penny, she just wanted a good home for her.  Katie is also Max's cousin, their mothers were sisters.

Truthfully, I would look for an adult especially if the dog is going to be left alone for hours.  It's hard to housebreak a puppy if you are gone for hours on end.  Also corgis need a lot of exercise especially a puppy or they can become destructive.  If you are not helping them find the right things to get into they will find something to get into on their own and it may not be to your liking.

Thank you so so much! I had no idea! I'm making it my mission over the next month to call up as many breeders as I can from california and the surrounding states.

I was also looking for a corgi that's 2-4 years old as well since i knew that it would have settled down a lot by that time.

Two of my boys were rescues from the local shelter.  I put in a request on Petfinder.com and when a corgi came up within 100 miles, i would get an email.  I was lucky and got my boys within a few months.  But i haven't seen any pure corgis (just mixes) in my area since then-and that was 2011.  Good luck.
