so after a week and seeing the vet, Baden still has itchy red skin. hes miserable and the benadryl helps (which the vet said to keep doing)  but the moment i think everything is ok his skin flairs up again and goes mad itching and chewing himself. the vet gave him some shampoo (once a week) and lotion that i have to apply 2Xs a day and that has proven to be a nightmare because he HATES the smell and so do i. it smells so bad, like pinsol and bleach is what i reminds me of. so i am looking for a new shampoo, spray, pill, anything to help him. hes so miserable and i dont understand what i am doing wrong. i even went and got coconut oil and put it on his skin but all he did was lick it off. should i try aloe vera? shea butter? im cruising though chewy.com and found some shampoos that might help him but before i spend money i am asking what have u used to help your fur babies?

Griffin has seasonal allergies--August until first freeze.  We live in Ohio.  He took prednisone for awhile but the side effects make it only good for short term.  The only thing that works for him is Atopica but it's expensive and has side effects also.  There's a new drug called Apoquel that has fewer side effects but isn't widely available.  You would have to ask your vet about it.

im heading back the vet tonight to see if theres something else she can recommend so ill ask about it :)

Just in case you haven't thought of this, is he causing himself it by excessive licking and chewing the irritations? Sully tends to do that when she is uncomfortable about anything from being bored or anxious to having a small allergy itch to being constipated. She will start to lick/chew one spot which leads to more irritation and itching and more skin breakout over a larger area. The cycle can be hard to break but it usually does if I keep using Benadryl. Also, is it possible that Baden has a yeast infection? That would be a different medication. If a small itch is being raised to the level of severe itch by his chewing you may have better success stopping that early on, maybe with a cone. This can be so frustrating. It can spread quickly if it is continually scratched. Hope you find a solution soon!

he does chew on his legs and scratches his tummy a lot which causes huge soars so i have been putting coconut oil on them to help heal the bites. i didnt think of a yeast infection. im heading the vet tonight to see if theres anything else we can do. over the phone she said she may prescribe steroids as it sounds like his body is inflamed from the inside

Steroids caused Sully to lose bladder control (while on the medicine) but it should help. Just an FYI so you don't start the medicine and worry he has a bladder infection or something.

thank you for letting me know about that! they did prescribe him steroids and he has to pee all the time

I have used a drug that is available as Wal-fenate (chlorphentramine maleate 4 mg) from Walgreens with great success for Murrays seasonal allergies. It was just mentioned by someone else in another post. The vet prescribed 1 1/2 twice a day for a 34 # Corgi. It's inexpensive and he didn't seem to suffer any side effects.

ill give that a try too! im just lost at what to do now, one side of his tummy is healed while the other is still red and inflamed even after steroids :(

I'm starting Wally on a supplement of half a table spoon of Coconut Oil (melted) on his food.

I'll reassess in about a month or so but so far he loves the taste of it.    I agree with you, putting them on skin or his paws makes a mess with oily puppy paw prints and just licks it off.

baden wasnt too crazy about it at first but i man does he LOVE when  melt it and put it in his food. cats still not sure about it though lol

Out of curiosity, have you changed anything within your home?  For example, have you started using a new cleaning product, air freshener, soap, lotion, hair spray/gel, or anything else that he might come into contact with either on his own or via petting?  Do others pet him when going outside?  Is it just his tummy/legs that itch and, if so, does he walk around on grass often?  I'm wondering if he's coming into contact with something on a semi-regular basis and it's causing his itching to worsen at times.  I'm certainly no expert, but it's what would come to mind if it were Ellie itching like crazy.

thank you Jen, i was going over in my mind with routes we take or anything new i bought to see if theres anything he could be touching anything out of the ordinary but the only thing he did was going over to a friends house and they just have a back yard with bushes but their yard was infested with fleas :( so with that, the vet said hes allergic to flea bites. at first i thought it was the new conditioner i bought for him called isle of dogs but after the steroids and a bath once a week in sheapets sheabutter shampoo hes a lot better. still a little itchy but better than before
