Hello,

After we lost our 1 year old Pemmy in a traffic accident, which we were OBVIOUSLY heartbroken from, we decided to get another puppy. We loved Pemmy so so so much and she made our lifes complete. The house is empty and quiet now. A house is not a home without a dog, without a corgi!

So here's the new pup we will be adopting in 2 to 3 weeks. She's a cardigan and not a Pembroke. The breeder tells us she will be a blonde, not a deep red one like her mother (last picture). She also thinks the black on the nose is going to dissapear. What do you guys think? What colors will she have?

I'm afraid i'm constantly going to compare her to our perfect Pemmy. Will she be as pretty, as loving, as crazy?
Are cardigans a lot different to pembrokes?

Yes Cardis are independent. They also will NOT tolerate another dog trying to dominate or intimidate them. Betty currently has a Great Dane, a Swiss mountain dog, two Pitt-bulls and a standard poodle that she has convinced not to trifle with her. When she is on-lead she is VERY protective of her humans. She is also a great guard dog at home. They don't look very intimidating until they grab hold of you, Not all Cardis are dominate personalities but most are. This trait was the reason for the Pembroke being bred. When the Celts moved south into lower Wales they started herding sheep. The Cardi was found to be too physical with the sheep and frequently injured the more fragile animal. Remember they were bred as camp guard dogs and herders for nasty tempered cattle. Sheep were no match for the Cardi. Thus cometh the Pembroke. Their herding methods fit the gentler sheep. Have fun with your Cardi. They are a continually evolving experience. We can't think of a life without Betty, but at 11 years old her time with us is growing shorter. We just had to order a ramp so she can get in the car. She does not tolerate the loss of her park privileges. We go every day rain or shine.

I'm so happy Mello is helping to ease your pain.  When Brady was first offered to us I wasn't sure I wanted to take on a new dog while Max needed so much more of my attention.  But I am so glad my husband encouraged me.  He is sweet, funny and a total love bug.    He is a whole new personality to love.  I still miss Max so much but Brady seems to know when I am feeling sad and manages to find a way to make me laugh.  He has been so good with Katie who misses her best friend and it didn't take him long to learn the game of herd the cats which the cats start.

We need pics as she is growing!

I know. I'm already noticing a lot of differences. She is now already much more independent than Pem ever was. A lot calmer en less barky as Pem was as a pup. I love having her and you were all right. It does eases the pain and take your mind off the horrible loss we first felt. We will always love our first corgi, our first dog. But this new pup, Mello, is already a doll and so so cute!

Cardis are every bit as sweet and loving as the pembroke. We have a cardi. she was terribly abused as a young dog so we had to deal with aggression and fear issues. Now two years later she is a love muffin. She is still dog aggressive when on lead. At the park she is fine and plays well with the other kids. Starting with a puppy will make life easier. The cardi is a little more aloof than the pemmy but not to the point of being cold. She will be fine and you will love her just as much. Uh .. watch out for the tail in car doors and such. Remember also that the two corgis are NOT related. They come from genetically different stock. Be prepared for the small differences.

I was so sorry to hear that Pemmy had an accident: I can remember how excited you were getting her. Looking at your new canine bundle of joy, it's not that she will take away any of your love for Pemmy / Pemmy's memory but this new little puppy will plug into new reserves of love. (Her mom looks very like a Pembroke to me, particularly since docking is now illegal in Ireland). Your puppy looks absolutely gorgeous: enjoy!

I used to always "wait" to get a new dog and probably had the same thoughts as you are having now. When I got Wynn it was after a death of a dog that found us and died way too early. I got Wynn my 1st Corgi shorty after that, he walked into the house and although I will never forget Bella... Wynn has filled the void and you will find new traits that will make your new dog special too. Memories are great but you will find new ones with your new pup. Enjoy...

She is adorable!  I don't know much about Cardis other than what I have read, all mine have been Pems.

As for  comparing the 2..I guess it's hard not to but it can get in the way of a new pup.  We recently went thru a similar situation only fate stepped in and gave us Brady 6 weeks before we lost our Max.  Max was my heart dog and always will be.  Focus on the new pup's personality and love her for who she is.  Brady is so different from Max but he has a loving, funny personality and I have no regrets bringing him into our family.  You will always have your precious memories of Pemmy but let this new pup help ease your pain, I know Brady did for us.  He did not take away missing Max, we still do, but he has added another dimension to our critter group and we love him for who he is.

And every once in awhile Max lets me know he is still here with me.

No doubt in my mind that she will fit in perfectly with your family. She is totally beautiful. To me, a house needs a corgi to make it a home! God bless and good luck!

She is adorable! Typically they say Cardigans are more serious than Pembrokes but as Beth mentioned my Cardi, Watson, is just a big goofball and never serious. Both breeds have considerable varience in their personalities with in the breed. Watson's breeder told me he was going to be goofy like his dad not seripus like his mom. I suspect that you will find some similarities with your beloved Pemmy but differences too. I have found from my experience that while i've never had a corgi smarter than my first they have all had quirky personalities that make you fall in love with them. I'm sure you will too. Enjoy and let her help you heal.

I'm scared I'm never going to find her as pretty, as smart as our Pem. Do these feelings mean we are rushing this? I'm having second thoughts..
