Bringing your dog into the United States from Overseas

Hi this is Brian,

Oscar's Dad from Sydney Australia I have a question and if anybody can help I would be most grateful.

I maybe Immigrating to The United States this year I'm looking into it at the moment. I have yet to decide if Oscar is up to making the trip to Richmond Virginia I will look into Pet transport companies that do everything. Oscar is now 13 years old I'm not sure of your quarantine laws for mainland USA? some countries you just have to have your dog vet checked so many days before they fly and checked by a vet on arrival at your new destination!. I have had Oscar since he was 3 months old he suffers separation anxiety disorder and it would break my heart to have to leave him behind but on the other hand is it selfish of me to take him away from his familiar surroundings and away from his playmate Sam!.

Can anybody give some advise? has anybody done this I know people take dogs interstate no problem but even though Oscar is healthy for his age to put him thru a 14 hour international flight then a domestic flight could he cope it will be bad enough me coping with it!. If I could have him in the seat next to me I would but that isn't going to happen!!!. I have to be realistic but I also want my Baby with me not my ex partner!.

Any info would be a great help.

Kind regards

Oscar's Dad

I am pretty sure that there is no quarantine requirement from Australia. HOWEVER take the animal to your vet and ask him to certify the dog fit for international travel. There is a form that he/she can fill out. You will need copies for the air carrier as well. Best make several copies so you have them if needed.

I have shipped animal on rare occasions and this was all I needed.

By international law, the hold area where live animals are placed must have the same environment as the passenger cabin. Ask your vet about mild tranquilizers to help with anxiety. That is a long trip.

Of course you could do like one lady I adopted to, she bought another ticket for her dog and the baby traveled in the first class seat next to her. You still need an approved carrier.

Looks like no quarantine.

You raise some good points about his age and the length of the journey.  You may want to discuss this with your vet.

Hi!  Our dog's sire came here temporarily from Australia to show and stud for 2 years, so I am assuming the requirements are not that prohibitive.  It's not like going into the UK, which has (ridiculous) quarantine laws even if the dog is vaccinated.

Here's what I found:  http://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-s...

I have no clue about bringing them overseas but in the states you still need to have a vet checked  and signed form that goes with. The form is a Department of Agriculture form that the vet signs saying the dog is OK to fly. I am assuming that there may be more shots needed for a flight of your kind. I would check with your airlines that you would be taking and they can probably give you more info?
