Does anyone have any ideas on how I can keep my corgi's attention when we are in obedience class? Jack is only 7 months old but when we go to his puppy class he focuses on everyone but me. I have tried getting really excited and being firm and having irresistable treats, nothing seems to work. He likes to watch the other dogs training and bark at them. If anyone has any ideas or has any stories to share that would be wonderful, I want to eventually get him in agility but at this rate I feel like I am failing as a trainer!

I have found that food is a strong motivator for corgis. If you have something .... AMAZING ... like cheese that he only gets after doing a very good job, this helps a lot. I used this tactic at first with my puppy, when we are at the obedience lesson place, he still watches me intently, even though he rarely gets this prize now.

Over time, things get easier. Using food only helps to gain attention, don't use it as a replacement for actual progress.
At 7 months of age he should be able to control some of those urges..he might become distracted but he should come back to you. Try to bait him and get him to keep his eye on you and encouraging this behavior. This is teaching him to be patient as well which brings me to my next point. Make sure you are allowing for play time..lots of running to wear him down a bit. A more tired Corgi will be relaxed and more responsive to you then one that has been cooped up. Even at home work w/his attention and being patient. If you can't get him to command at home then you can't expect him to do it w/all that commotion and excitement going on around him in an unfamiliar place. Maybe once you get this at home start having him do this in busy parks or pet stores and then head for the class. Step by step...consistency and patience. You'll reape the rewards in due time.
