3/19/14  I just inquired of Dr. Joan Coates.  If you have an older corgi -- even (especially?) if it is UNAFFECTED, you can still participate in this DM research.  Note that she mentions the pertinence of this research to ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in humans, which involves mutations in the same gene, SOD1:

Thank you for your email.  We are still collecting tissues from older unaffected Corgis.  These are used as control tissues with the varying testing results, e.g. AT RISK unaffected dog versus Normal tested dog.  Many owners want to help degenerative myelopathy research through donating their pet’s tissues.  As long as we have some funds available, we will do our best to make this happen.  The kits/processing, etc… is around $200/dog.  We have a special fund dedicated to DM Research.  All the tissues are archived for use in future research and also to be available for other veterinary and human ALS researchers.

We have much to learn from the tissues.  The dog disease has similarities and differences with ALS as we continue to study canine DM.

With best regards,

Joan

Maybe Scout can spend some time at the bridge fetching tennis balls for Pete Seeger, or just howling along:

Oh, this is so hard, because Scout looks EXACTLY like Al (we noticed this long ago).

Even if your old corgi does not have DM, you may be able to help this research!

The following information might be a bit dated, but when I attended Dr. Coates' DM seminar to the CPWCC in Seattle (2010), she said they needed NORMAL CONTROLS -- old normal dogs who did NOT die of DM.   This is not a trivial sample donation --  it requires autopsy tissue after a dog has died, involving a vet willing to participate (usually on their own time), sample shipping on dry ice probably -- see the contast links at the bottom of my Oct. 2010 post:

How you can help DM research even if your corgi is UNAFFECTED

Our beautiful Scout went peacefully to his rest last Wednesday after living for over a year with Degenerative Myelopathy.  His tissue and blood samples were sent to Dr. Coates at U of Mo, who is doing research into this terrible disease.  We miss you so much, our sweet Scout!
