I am wondering what the best options and brands everyone uses for treats to give their dogs for times when you just really need them to keep busy and occupied. I am scared to buy bones or rawhides because I just don't know too much about them, I have done the frozen kong and that don't last him very long.

my puppies LOVE antlers and hooves, they last really long and keeps them occupied for a long time!

otherwise, any other treat gets eaten in seconds -_______-

i definitely dont like giving them rawhides too much, perhaps get them bully sticks? my pups like the curly ones but they get kinda gross >< my favorites would have to be antlers !

Becca likes antlers, but loves rawhide. When I first got her I limited her rawhide because she would chew until it was gone. Now I buy only USA made and get it in large sizes. If her head tilts when she carries it, it will last. I also have kongs and several other toys that dispense treats. Some of these take longer than other. I keep a variety of treats on hand to stuff them with. If you have to force the treat in, it is harder to get out.

I also keep a few toys for rainy days. Becca has a hide a squirrel. It doesn't take long for her to solve it, but I just stuff the squirrels and a few other toys back in. I get it out nights I am correcting papers.

Are you looking for things for when you are home? Or when the pup is alone. That makes a difference, some toys and treats require supervision.

Try doing a search on this topic, there have been lots of discussions with good info. Here is a link to one that has lots of interactive toy suggestions

I give Franklin retriever rolls, they are long enough that he usually takes a few days to chew it completely. He wasn't interested in the Himilayan chews or antlers and I won't give hooves bc they break teeth. I woudn't give rawhides or himilayan chews unsupervised

Melissa what are these retriever rolls you talk about?

Its actually mostly when we are with him, like in the car for a while or when we have him in a public place and he needs to calm down a bit, or have people over. Just for those times when he gets very hyper about the activity around him and needs something so amazingly tasty to keep him busy.

I do have antlers for him (absolutely love those things too!) but he actually couldn't care less about them if I give them to him in an exciting place. I have not tried hooves!! And I just had to look up what hide a squirrel was.. that is too cute. I will have to try those.

Becca is 14 months and no toy is going to distract her in a public place. If we are out and about and she gets a little too active I play the touch game with her until she refocuses. She is at a point now that I can stop and talk to someone and she will sit and wait. This morning we walked to the store and went in for a paper. She did great, stayed at heel, but was way distracted. I started taking her into PetLife, a small petstore, and progressed up to the chain stores while training. In the car, she is in a crate. Even if she were to get hyper, she is enclosed and safe.

Mine will not chew if they are excited.  How old is your pup?  You might try teaching a settle word, and also something like "watch me".    Chewing is usually something dogs do when they are already relaxed.   And remember that many dogs will vomit if you give them something edible when they are too worked up!

I agree with others that a chew toy won't calm him down if he is excited. It probably took Franklin 2 years to finally learn to sit when greeting somebody and not jump up, of course when I got Kirby the out of control maniac all of that training went out the window! Its really hard with corgis since it seems EVERYBODY thinks its just so cute when they jump up to greet them. You can teach him a "go to bed/mat"  command which tends to work really well for dogs that get too excited when company comes over. You basically teach them that unless they are calmly laying in the bed/mat/crate assigned, the door won't open. You can google how to teach this. We did it in one of Franklin's agility classes and I used an old kitchen mat. Now I can put the mat anywhere and if I say "go to mat" he knows to run over and lay down on it.

We get charlie bears' and put them in a treat ball. They could send hours pushing the ball around or until the treats run out.
