Hello Everyone,

I've never had a dog, so I'm new to this whole pup thing. My puppy arrives on Friday and I want to prepare everything for him so have a bunch of questions here and I need the corgis advice please! :)

His name is Crouton and he is 8 weeks old.

- What kind of food do you recommend, and is it alright to feed him just dry food always?

- What amount should I feed him and how many times? I heard yogurt is good to add in their meals everyday?

- Also do I have to comb his hair everyday to try and avoid shedding?
- What kind of combs do I have to use?

- What about nails, does it need to be trimmed every week?

- Do I have to use a nail grinder or just a nail cutter?

- How often do I have to exercise him?

- Since he is a puppy how many times should I walk him everyday?

- Do I need to brush his teeth often?

- I read Milkbones if given to dogs everyday, are good for his teeth?

Crouton thanks you! :)

I feed Fromms and have been very happy with it. Most breeders recommend a large breed puppy formula or an ALS formula for corgis because you want them to grow slowly, similar to a large breed puppy. Dry food is fine.

- What amount should I feed him and how many times? I heard yogurt is good to add in their meals everyday?

This will depend on the dog. I'd say at least 1.5-2 cups a day to start and see how his weight goes. I would keep him on the same food his breeder is feeding him for a few weeks, and then if you wish to change it or start adding additional things do it then so he has time to adjust to his new home first. If/when you do switch, it should be done slowly over the course of at least a week or more.

- Also do I have to comb his hair everyday to try and avoid shedding?

Puppies really don't need to be brushed much, but it's a good idea to get him used to the idea. He WILL shed no matter how much you brush him once he's an adult. Please be prepared for that. We usually brush once a week or so.

- What kind of combs do I have to use?

I like a regular comb and/or a slicker brush for the pants. I would recommend a furminator once he gets his adult coat but not for a puppy.

- What about nails, does it need to be trimmed every week?

I try to trim nails every 2 weeks. It depends on the individual dog and how much he wears them down on his own as well.

- Do I have to use a nail grinder or just a nail cutter?

I just use a clipper but many people like the grinder. I haven't tried it myself. I recommend a boat load of treats for whatever method you use.

- How often do I have to exercise him?

At 8 weeks he doesn't need much exercise. A block or two is plenty sufficient for walk at first. Once he's around 4 months old you can probably start doing a mile or so at a time. Any amount of "free" exercise is fine (him running around doing his own thing) but no forced running or very long walks until he's closer to a year old.

- Since he is a puppy how many times should I walk him everyday?

As said above, not much at that age. I would focus on taking him as many places as possible and socializing him with all kinds of new people, settings, (vaccinated) dogs, etc. That alone will tire him out quite a bit.

- Do I need to brush his teeth often?

I have never brushed my dog's teeth, but you certainly can. I'm not sure how often is recommended. My two get a cow ear or similar chew every night and that keeps their teeth quite clean. I recommend bestbullysticks.com for chews.

- I read Milkbones if given to dogs everyday, are good for his teeth?

Milkbones are pretty much garbage ingredients, but my dogs still get a few here and there. I don't think they're really big enough to do much for their teeth though.

Thank you so much that is so helpful!

And your dogs are beautiful :)))
