I could really use some advise for a problem that Lucy is having. We spent two and a half hours in the emergency vet clinic this morning because she was vomiting. Total, she vomited 18 times in an hour and a half. This isn't the first time we've been to the vet for this, but this is the worst it's been. We have been to the vet five times in the last month and a half for diarrhea and vomiting and everytime we go in she's happy and energetic so the vet says she's "healthy diarrhea and healthy vomting". I've switched her food twice but everything she's had is chicken and something so the ER vet suggested I change to something that she's never had before (like kangaroo, which I have no idea where to find it). Right now she's on Natural Balance Chicken and Sweet Potato, I was thinking of staying with Natural Balance and trying the bison or venison fomulas. I've also heard Trader Joe's dog food is good as well as a raw diet.

Has anyone else gone through this? Any advice is appreciated.

I'm so glad to hear you had better luck with the new Vet's office.  You still don't have an answer yet, but at least you're doing something instead of watching poor Lucy feel miserable.  If you notice any more diarrhea or vomiting you should 1) notify the new Vet's office and see if they want to examine her and 2) switch her over to a bland diet for a couple of days.  Boil some hamburger and rice or dish out some cottage cheese and rice.  Since chicken is still on the table as a possible cause for the stomach upset, I would avoid feeding chicken and rice.  That way you can give her poor tummy a rest while they figure this all out.

Good luck and keep us updated!  Hopefully this will turn out to get something easily remedied.  Ellie and Yuki send Corgi hugs and Eskimo kisses your way!

I just wanted to give you all an update. I took Lucy to another vet yesterday afternoon and she was really helpful. All I've been wanting are ideas as to what is going on and possible solutions. We're going to start with the least invasive and work our way up from there. They are doing another fecal test to specifically look for giardia and she gave me medication for deworming just in case that's it and antibiotics in case there is a bug. I'm just glad that we're trying something. Thanks for all of your suggestions! Keep them coming and I'll keep you updated.

Dexter had issues with chicken as well. His poor sensitive tummy couldn't take it. We switched to California Natural Lamb (grain free) and he had has no issues since. California Natural also has a new Kangaroo and red lentils (grain free) flavor. We haven't tried it though.

Hope Lucy feels better soon!

I'd definitely get a second opinion. There is nothing "healthy" about what you're describing, IMO. Is there always diarrhea along with the vomiting?

I worked as a vet tech for 13 years--what you are describing is not 'healthy'. My first suggestion to you is seek another vet.

Hi, just wondering, do you give your dog treats? Dental bones? Check the country of origen, please check the FDA website, not to alarm you but there have been some warnings(got me looking)

We've been there. Bella kept throwing up and lab work was fine. We had a barium(?) xray and that didn't show any blockage. She was on so many meds and not getting better that I finally told the vet I thought they actually were making her worse. I took her off chicken completely and put her on lamb and now use bison also. This worked great for us. ALSO...I always still add warm water to her food as she was always throwing up the food and not getting enough water. I still do this and it's been 9 months with no problems... Also if you have switched her food that can also cause a great problem if not done over about 10 days.  Good luck, I know how frustrating it is.

I just want to vent this because I am officially frustrated with my vet. I have been emailing back and forth with him all day about this and his answers have all been one liners. I asked what food suggestions he has, response: "when was the last time you saw vomiting?". I asked what ideas he has about what is causing this, response: "I don't know what caused this episode but I doubt it was the food".

Not helpful.

Are you still in contact with your breeder? If so I would tell her/him what is going on and see if anything has come up before with any other puppies. It may be worth just trying another round of metronidazole which is an intestinal antibiotic and also gets rid of giardia and see if that helps. If she isn't having diarrhea currently though, then giardia isn't as likely. I hope somebody can figure out what's going on with your little one. Would be worth switching foods as well since its an easy thing to try, remember to not feed any chicken based treats either. Poor girl.

Melissa, Lucy has had 3 fecal tests. One when I brought her in for her very first puppy check up and two during this whole mess. The very first one came back positive for giardia. But the other two have come back negative. I wonder if the giardia is still lingering and the test isn't picking it up. I made an appointment to see another vet for a second opinion for tomorrow so we'll see what they say. I'm so frustrated by this whole thing. All I need is an answer for what's wrong so we can try and fix it and no vet has been able to give me that yet.
