I live on Southern and Watson (in Buckeye -- wayyyy west), so somewhere more west would be nice, but I understand that most of you live on the east side so I would be willing to drive farther. Somewhere near I-10 or I-17 should be fine for me.
  • Mary

Yay I'm so excited! Nibbler is all vaccinated and she just had her spay surgery, so we'll be able to make the next corgi meet-up! Yay!
  • Alice

I found an add for a skeleton costume with a Corgi in it:

  • Alice

I saw that one at Tartget and thought it was really cute. I'm sure Warner looks adorable in it. :)
  • Abbea and Vivi

Here are a couple I found on google image search.

  • Mary

I keep forgetting to ask, did you draw the picture for this group Abbea, the one of the corgi in front of the cactus?
  • Kirby'sPerson

Hi fellow Arizonans! We live in the Verde Valley. Hey, anybody wanna stop by and help clip some Corgi nails.
My "baby" is a 12yrs & 8 months. He doesn't take the long walks he used to - gets tuckered out, so we do 2 smaller ones. As a result his nails have grown ridiculously long. They LOOK painful. It's like he is walking in ill-fitting shoes; At home on our wooden floors, he toes are go askew, he can't get traction, his back legs slip out.

I have tried sedating Kirby with Benadryl in the proper dose, tried to calm him in every other way possible....but he gets ANGRY. I mean attack-mode angry. Now I try to just touch his feet gently, holding them and praising him. I think they must hurt him. Any suggestions before I bring him to PetCo or the Vet?
  • Jessica and Zero

The nail cutting is going to be difficult unless you've always touched/played his paws from an early age. You can try to play with his paws until he gets comfortable with you touching his feet and maybe you will be lucky in getting his nails trimmed at home. There might be another way to do this, but I only know this way.
  • Kirby'sPerson

Thank you for the input Jessica&Zero.

I am Kirby's main person. So I was shocked when he turned on me when I tried to clip his nails recently. I got my hand out in the nick time, but he was going for a bite, with little to no warning.

It may be best for me to bring Kirby to the Vet and console him, while they tag-team the nail clipping. It's no longer a matter of grooming. Those nails can't be good for his feet. As he is getting older and his eyesight is not as good & he is more anxious of things like his feet, more protective. Anyway, TY. If anyone else knows a way to safely calm or sedate a dog at home, without medications let me know. Thanks.
  • Alice

At this point I would let the vet do it. In some cases, the dog doesn't react badly when it's someone other than their owner trying to clip their nails. My friend has a Husky who makes so much noise when her nails are being clipped you'd think she was dying, but when the vet or groomer cut them she's a perfect angle. Has Kirby ever had his nails clipped? If so, who did it?
  • Kirby'sPerson

Thank you Alice. I think we are going to let the Vet do it after all. When Kirby was younger, we would have them clipped by the vet, usually at the end of a regular exam for shots or nose drops. Occasionally I had done a nail or two without a fuss. It seems like his normal corgi 'tude has matured into that of a crotchetty old guy, concerning things he was never crazy about anyway. Especially in the last year to 18 months. LOL....give me 20 or 30 years & I'll be the same way! In other regards, he is still happy bouncy Kirby. TY again.

(Srry I interrupted the discussion about Halloween!)

Ein absolutely HATES his nails being cut so we have to double team him and put a muzzle on him...he's never bitten anyone but he's acted like he would so it just seemed safer for us this way. I usually end up holding him and talking baby talk to him while my mom cuts his nails, he fights like hell when we're doing it but he's fine once we're done and take the muzzle off
  • Alice

I started clipping Finn's nails when he was very little just to get him used to it. He was probably about 10 or 11 weeks. I never hurt him but still, as he got older he decided he didn't like having his paw held still for long periods of time and would start whining in protest and mouthing the hand holding his paw which makes it difficult to cut his nails. Once full grown it became harder to cut his nails because they are very fat nails and the clippers would cause them to split so I stopped and we had a groomer grind them down last time. I guess I'll either have to get a dremel or continue to take him to the groomer to have his nails done.
  • Mary

Nibbler does the same thing, she tries to mouth the hands touching her paws. She's fine when we handle her paws, but when it comes to clipping them I think that she thinks it's a game, and every now and then when I squeeze the clippers she flinches, which means I really have to hold her paws. The easiest way I've found to distract her is to give her a dental chew bone, the green ones. They last long enough that I can clip and file all of her toes and get some brushing in, and she loves them so much that she doesn't investigate the nail clippers.
  • Abbea and Vivi

Welcome Kirby's Person! Sorry this is a little late. My parents live in the Verde Valley too (Cottonwood to be exact). I saw a couple walking a corgi on their street one time when I was walking their dogs, but it looked to be a younger female, so it couldn't have been you, right?
  • Kirby'sPerson

TY for the welcome. Is that your art...the corgi & cactus and your avatar. I love it.Do you sell your work somewhere? Or exhibit it?

We actually live in Cornville. Kirby is a boy...he still looks quite chipper, but definitely not young. The photo that is my current avatar was earlier this year. I'll post others. I notice a Corgi around here whenever I see one. There is one in Jerome we always see. My son lives there. More later.
  • Abbea and Vivi

Yes, the art in my avatar (there's a bigger picture in my picture album on here) is one that I drew but the Corgi with the cactus is just two pictures I found on Google and I put them together. I need to make a better one soon.

Oh Cornville! I actually married my husband there, at the Living Water retreat center (it's actually where we met since I worked there before I went to college).

Kirby still looks great though, for being that age. I notice corgis when I see them too. We were still so far from the corgi we saw that you really couldn't tell what it was, but something about it's size made me joke with my husband that it was a corgi, and lo and behold, it was!! I told them, "I like your corgi!" as I passed. They kinda smiled but they didn't say anything...
  • Rosemary Tilton

Hi Everyone, Can someone give me the location of chaparral park. I would appreciate it..............Thanks lots................Rosemary
  • Alice

    Rosemary,
If you click on the "Halloween Meetup" discussion above it gives the address, crossroads and a map. It's right off the main road so you can't miss it driving down Hayden.
  • Abbea and Vivi

I decided not to go to the meet up guys.. :( I know I'll be missing a lot, and I really wanted to see all the corgis in costumes, but I'm soo tired from work.. If it was like 5 minutes away, I'd definitely go, but where I live I would waste 2 hours of the evening in the car getting there. I would go if I had a corgi to bring though..
  • Abbea and Vivi

Oh, and I almost forgot.. Take lots of pictures and videos for me.. I really wanted to see the corgis..
  • Rosemary Tilton

Sorry Chloe & I won't make todays get together, I;m watching my grandson who is sick. Will make the next one. Have a wonderful time............Rosemary
  • Kirby'sPerson

Hope you had a fun time! We too would have had a 4-hour round trip....if we had another reason to be in Scottsdale or Phoenix, would have loved to have been there. Can't wait to see photos.

Rosemary, hope your grandson gets better soon.
  • Rosemary Tilton

did everyone who went last night have a good time, I know Chloe & I sure wish we could have come. She dying to make new friends.......Rosemary
  • Alice

Since Finnigan didn't get to go to the Halloween meet up, I thought I'd share pictures of him in costume. He was such a cute Peter Pan. :)

  • Kirby'sPerson

Too Cute!!! Fits him to a Tee. He is a little darling.
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

Wow Alice, that does look awesome! Finn looks like a model...how did you get him to stand still? Hope he's feeling better.
  • Alice

Anything can he achieved with food, ha ha! He's so used to being asked to stay still for pictures that it's not much trouble all. He probably would make a good doggy model since he's so easy to work with. :)

He's doing better. Still has some stiffness upon waking but no noticeable limp. I think we need to reintroduce him to activity slowly so we don't get back to limping. We're trying to take him on multiple long walks each day to build up strength in those legs. If we notice a limp we'll have to cut back. It will take time to learn his limits. The meet ups are rough because he wants to run the whole time and that will bring on a limp. He loves going though, so I think in the future we will go and not stay as long.
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

I'm thinking two words for Finnigan: "Blue Steel"
  • Alice

Ha ha! He does think he's too sexy. :)
  • Adrienne

Love Finn's costume, what a cutie!
  • Abbea and Vivi

No one took any pictures at the meet up? :(
  • Kirby'sPerson

This is the first time I've been able to check in for several days & I am sad to read that Finn has a leg problem. What happened? Sound's like he is getting wonderful care and getting better. Kirby is going to the Vet later this week for an overall Senior check-up + of course...getting his nails clipped. $14.00 seems like a "deal" after all the ways I have tried. I surrender!!! LOL.

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween. Kirby LOVES to meet & greet people (what corgi doesn't?), but we had him with his bed and water in one of the bedrooms to avoid any little tot getting scared. He got lots of attention and toy fetching time...so a good time was had by all!
  • Alice

Thank you for your concern about Finn. He is not limping for the moment so that's a good sign. Our vet diagnosed him with hip dysplasia but we were told if his limping persists we will need to see a specialist to make sure nothing else is going on. He doesn't care though. Whatever the problem is, he still wants to run and play. :)

I agree with you on the nail clipping. I hate trying to do it myself so it's so worth it to pay for someone else to do it. Hope all goes well at Kirby's check up!
  • Abbea and Vivi

    I want him.. :(

He's up in Prescott, but I'm not sure if we can afford a dog yet. :( :( :( :( :(
It says he's a corgi mix but he looks like a purebred to me, just the stockier kind, which I like...
  • Abbea and Vivi

    Oh, here's his petfinder page.

The shelter website also has some info on him. He's about 4. It also says he's on hold so maybe I'm too late.
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

I agree, he looks like a purebred. And a handsome one at that! I don't see that he's on hold, and the comments say he "loves everyone and is a little love bug". So yeah, he's a Corgi. Make the call!
  • Abbea and Vivi

I just might... I showed my husband and he seemed very sure that he wants to get him and we can afford it. He said he'll be like an anniversary gift for us. I'll try calling today and I'll ask if he's still available. The soonest I can go see him is Sunday since that's my husband's first day off this week.
  • Abbea and Vivi

I'm so excited I could hardly sleep last night! We were planning on going to my parents' house this weekend anyway and it's a lot closer to where King Pin is! I really hope we can get him...
  • Alice

Did you call and find out if he's still available? That would be so great if you could adopt him. I agree that he looks all Corgi and he sounds very sweet. Best part is, you won't have to go through all the puppy training.

I'm sure you can afford him. I know how you feel because my husband and I are in the same boat, possibly worse off as far as finances go since we were both laid off and had to take jobs that pay less, but you just make it work. We wanted to wait until we had a house and more money and what not but years kept passing and we finally said to hell with it, we're getting a dog. I'm glad we did. Life is better with a dog. You should check out United Pet Care. It's a pet health discount plan (not actual insurance). For Finn we pay $9 a month and as much as we've had to take Finn to the vet, it's been worth it.

Good luck, let us know what happens. :)
  • Dexter, Marple, Dennis and Nancy

"Life is better with a dog" - Alice, I couldn't have said it better myself! Nancy and I wish Dexter could have joined us *years* earlier, but of course life's curve balls always got in the way. Neither of us owned a dog before Dexter, and he's been as patient with us as we've been with him.

And yeah, bypassing the puppy training reduces stress and expense for sure.

Keep us updated on whether King Pin will be joining the club!
  • Abbea and Vivi

Well, I tried calling right when I got home. I had to leave a message though since no one was able to answer the phone. Oh well. I hope they call me back...
  • Abbea and Vivi

Oh, and thanks for the advice guys! I agree, life is definitely better with a dog!

I'll check out United Pet Care also. It sounds like a good deal, and I don't want money problems to hold us back from going to the vet if we need to.
  • Katherine Randall

Hi guys, i'm new to this corgi business but loving it so far, i was wondering if any of you participate in any kind of agility type stuff, my little Lilu loves to run and be active but I wasn't sure what was our there, thanks!
  • Abbea and Vivi

Aww.. I found out King Pin was adopted today. Definitely a bitter sweet ending for me. Well, I'm glad he found his home.. I just thought that maybe this was the one. :(
  • Alice

Keep looking. You'll find the right Corgi for you. Have you checked the AZ Corgi rescue?
  • Abbea and Vivi

Yes. I don't want a female yet, and the only younger ones they have a female..
  • Abbea and Vivi

I found another one! Wow, this never happens!
    http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=15078925

I emailed already (they close at 5) and I want to visit Monday if he's still there. Wow a 4+ hour drive though!
