Calling all corgi owners:

I have a medical question:  Roo, our little red brindle cardi, has developed a limp, and the xrays showed what looks like a bone spur where the shoulder bone socket meets the arm bone.  He is not in pain, he lets us (incl. vet) manipulate it every which way without a reaction.  Vet is sending xrays off to radiologist for second opinion, because corgi legs are so different.  Anyone have any experience with corgis and bone spurs?  We've ruled out OCD (basically dysplasia of the shoulder  joint) and any muscular/tendon/foot issues.  Thanks!

P.S.  This will not keep Roo from coming with on Sunday, lol. . .

Maybe Sunday! My boyfriend is having his wisdom teeth yanked on Friday so we'll see how he is feeling.

Danielle: I am no Vet. But based upon what my Vet has told me and my expereince. Corgis are a true dwarf breed, so therefore they may be more prone for bone and muscle problems. Which is one reason we need to watch their weight, due to the short legs and stress on their backs. When Boudreaux was only 6, he was limping real bad. Took him in and the Vet first thought bone spurs, but it is Arthritis ALSO, after looking at the x-rays.  At this young of an age?? But I have had him on very low doses of  metacam. No known sides affects that we (vet and I) have noticed.  Again, I am no Vet, but the research I did on this kind of medicine the Metacam is low dose and not as many side effects.

Bourdreaux has no problem now running and playing. He is 7 now and no limping. He is, or was at the time not over weight like my other Corgi, Labus.  Labus limps sometimes, but he is 10 and over weight, but on a diet. The Vet did do x-rays on Labus, but he just has fat around his sockets. (I am a bad Momma, I know, he is on OM and green beans).. I hope this helps you, I know kinda long. Have a great day!! Not sure if Emma and I will make it tomorrow.  We're driving in from Houston and sometimes the car ride is enough for her.  She LOVES playing with the other Corgis and she's probably been missing Felix ;p

 

@Danielle - Emma has limped her whole life - well, not limped, but hopped rather.  I don't know if you were at the last Corgi meetup, but it's very obvious that she travels differently.  Don't think I think your Roo has anything similar to Emma, but I just wanted to add that while Emma's X-rays have never shown ANYTHING abnormal, she has never shown us pain - she just hops.  There have been times I worry she is in pain and just doesn't show it.  She's never resisted us messing with her legs.  I think that these are REALLY resilient little dogs with a true "mind over matter" mentality.  I sure hope your Roo is alright!

Shelly pointed out to me that the meetup is THIS Sunday. For some reason, I was thinking it was the 9th. Okay so are we meeting at 2?

We had a nice little crowd of Denton corgis tonight!!  Sunday would be even more awesome :)

We will certainly be there sunday -- hope to see lots of you there!  And thanks so much to everyone for their insights on corgis and their little legs.  The radiologist agreed that it was a bone spur -- not a big deal, it isn't causing pain now, but he may get arthritis in that joint as he ages.  So, we'll watch his weight, we won't pursue agility with him, and he'll start a glucosamine/chondroitin supplement. 

@Shelley -- yes, I remember Emma and how her hop does not slow her down in the least!!  And they are tough little dogs, very determined, and very happy just to be themselves.  I would like to be a LOT more like my dogs, lol. . .

Hello everyone! I'd like to introduce myself and my resident corgi butt. I'm Sarah and I am a very frequent to the visitor to the Denton Dog Park; I met up with some other mycorgi.com people tonight.

 

I'm at the Denton Dog Park almost every day, though Greatta, my corgi, and I are usually on the big dog side of the park so my Labrador and Weimaraner can stretch their legs. I'm looking forward to meeting more corgis and their owners! I hope to be able to come on Sunday, so stick around until 3 or something so I can have time to get there and meet some new friends!

Your post reminded me of this article that I read a while back. I thought everyone else might enjoy it.

Out of curiosity - who is around Plano/Frisco?

We are, but are Corgi-less.  Looking to acquire some Corgi goodness around mid-November or so, so if anyone can recommend a trustworthy breeder, let me know.

CannedHam: we just googled different phrases like "corgi for sale", "corgi puppies", etc like crazy and called around until we found someone who was close enough and in the price range. Another option is to contact North Texas Pembroke Welsh Corgi Fanciers, which is an AKC regional subgroup. http://www.northtxwelshcorgis.org. They have breeder referrals and Corgi rescue info.

Yes, please -- an address would be nice.  We can be there anytime after 2 -- I figure it will take us about an hour and a half to get there. . .

Located in Lake Forest Park at 1760 E. Ryan Rd., the park offers separate fenced areas for large dogs and small/shy dogs, human and pet drinking fountains, and paved parking; no restrooms. The park is closed every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for mowing and maintenance.

Is there anyone else that frequents the park on Keller Springs in Dallas? I've seen a few corgis there from time to time, and always love when I do, but I don't know if any of them are on this forum or not. Haven't tried Jack Carter yet but I've heard about it before.

Do we have any Arlington folks? We go to the Arlington dog park. Once we saw a Corgi, but it was on the big dog side and we tend to stick with the smaller dogs.

Yes, please!!  we really like the arlington park, and can make that one after work or on the weekends pretty muich anytime!

Question - Emma finishes up her shots next week (YAY!) Do I need to wait for an additional period after them before she can run around a dog park or just a park in general? Or would she be good to go?

Emma is still pretty young right? Usually shots are finished up around 16 weeks but if she's had her last round plus rabies then she should be good to go. You might stick to the puppy section first time around =). They grow up so fast dont they!

She's about to turn 13 weeks. Going by so quickly :(

It takes time for the immune system to develop antibodies after a vaccination. We waited two weeks after Zoe's last set of shots + rabies, to give her immune system time to do its thing. :)

My vet said to wait 2 weeks

I am planning on going to the corgi celebration in Buda. I think it will be a lot of fun.

We're planning to go to Buda as well. We haven't been before, but it sounds like a blast. Now we have two Corgi's, 7-yo Roscoe and new baby, Evie, so it's time to take the plunge. Yes, we've gladly turned into Corgi-dorks.

I really really wanted to go,and will use any excuse to go to Austin. Unfortunately, we start puppy classes that week.

I wish I could go to the Buda corgi meet up, but that's a 3-4 hour drive and with my work hours, I can't. My friend lives and goes to college very near there, so I am definitely jealous of all you corgis that get to go. I hope it's lots of fun, and hopefully I can get to a meet up another time. :D

Does anyone know if any of the parks around Dallas are doing any dog costume events or specific days to bring your dog dressed up? I don't know if would just be on Halloween or, if people are taking their kids trick-or-treating, the weekend before.

I can't wait for the Corgi festival in Buda, Texas!  It is a long way for us here in Fort Worth, but I am so looking forward to seeing all the corgis and meeting "My Corgi" friends!  It is a great way to meet people and raise money for Corgi rescue!  I sure hope to see all of you there!

We all need to wear or have a corgi.com pin or something so we can meet you guys...  I am not taking my boys (the corgis), but I might have a button made with their picture..(I know, I am a bad momma!!)

I am not taking my babies either.  It is too long a drive, they would not be in a great mood when we got to Buda.  But I still want to see everyone and all the corgis!  I do have pictures of my corgis to bring,  I  think some kind of  I.D. would be a great idea!
